Supplement Guide: Turmeric

Curcuma longa, Curcuma domestica

Origin: A yellow-colored powder ground from the roots of the lily-like turmeric plant. It is a common ingredient in curry powder. The turmeric plant grows in India and Indonesia and is related to the ginger family.

Dosage: Capsules or spice. Capsule, typically 400 mg to 600 mg three times per day; or 0.5 g to 1 g of powdered root up to 3 g per day.

Claims: Reduces pain, inflammation and stiffness related to rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis; treats bursitis. Known as a cleansing agent, turmeric often is used as a digestive aid in India.

What we know: Traditionally used in Chinese and Indian Ayurvedic medicine to treat arthritis; the active ingredient in turmeric is curcumin, which is nontoxic.

Studies: Several recent studies show that curcumin or turmeric has anti-inflammatory properties and modifies immune system responses. A 2006 study showed turmeric was more effective at preventing joint inflammation than reducing joint inflammation.

High doses of turmeric can act as a blood thinner and cause stomach upset. Do not take if you have gallstones or are taking blood-thinning medications.

For knee pain use Mahanaryan oil/tel for massage and after massage do some dry shake ( for dry shake hot some send and put in pillow case or bag and tie it. then doble or tiple thick towel and put this towel on knee and on top of this towel put sand bag and on top of it another towel) when you feel too hot and cant bare it take it out. do it 10 minutes or until the sand cool.) Mahanarayan oil you can find in Indian store. or buy from Inida. if you can't find sand you can use rubber water bottle for shske.

i take a product called garden of life, FYI (for your inflammation) i have been on this for several years. it work wonderfully. it contains turmeric as well as many other helpful things. it took at 6 mo of use to see any help. prior to this I couldnt get off of arthrotec (on it in addition to methatrexate for RA). After 6 months of continuous use of FYI I was able to get off the NSAID. This was a very big accomplishment for me. I would seriously recommend giving this supplement a try.

I am currently on methatrexate, and humaria and FYi do to the disease progressing but the FYI helps with joint pain and swelling, does the same thing as your NASAID drugs w/out the side effects.
