Supplement Guide: DMSO

Dimethyl Sulfoxide; see MSM

Origin: A colorless, sulfur-containing organic by-product of wood pulp processing.

Dosage: Cream, gel; topically, 25 percent DMSO solution; take internally, only if prescribed by a physician.

Claims: Relieves pain and inflammation, improves joint mobility in osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, JRA and scleroderma, and manages amyloidosis (excessive build-up of protein in organs as seen in RA). Increases blood flow to skin.

What we know: Topically, appears to be an anti-inflammatory.

Studies: Controlled studies as a topical application for DMSO and OA have yielded conflicting results. Few human studies.

Side effects of DMSO taken internally include headache, dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation and anorexia. Topical DMSO also can cause skin irritation and dermatitis. Do not use DMSO if you have diabetes, asthma or liver, kidney or heart conditions. Never take industrial-grade DMSO. Wash off any lotions or skin products before applying DMSO.

DMSO is like a miracle product. I have used it successfully for many years, in areas all over my body, especially as I have gotten older. It has saved me from a lot of pain and suffering and, compared to prescription medication, it is very inexpensive. It not only helps to stop the pain, and reduce inflammation, it actually helps injuries to heal much quicker than without. I even found a site that has a special formula that gets rid of many of the side effects and even tells you how to apply it, which I have not been able to find anywhere else. They have lots of information too, and it is free. The site is: www.dmso-use.com
I have learned a lot from them.

I was treated with DMSO by a Uroligist to treat Intersticial Cystitis (condition of the bladder, inflammation in the lining). It is (or was) the first line of treatement for this condition. It was instilled directly into the bladder. I quit the treatments because of the odor it caused coming out of my skin and breath, it was bad, even though it seemed to help.

I think DMSO is a great product and can help many ailments if used correctly. I buy mine at the feed store in the horse supply isle.

I only know about the topical side of this.. wish there was a place to find out about other indications and dosage. I do believe big buck pharmaceutical companies have paid to keep this off the shelves.

I have been a veterinarian for 25 years and have used DMSO on my patients all that time. As a matter of fact I learned how to use it while I was in vet school here in the US. Mostly we use it topically for arthritis and muscle inflammation. I have seen it injected intravenously to treat various neurological conditions, like encephalitis. It can be combined with steroids and antibiotics and applied to the skin or ears. It does "take" these things into the body through the skin. When used properly, it can be very beneficial, just heed the warnings and precautions.

DMSO is by far one of the best discoveries of the century but because it is not a drug it does not produce the profits that the pharmacist usually expects. Please fell free to write to me I have the more fantastic experience with it. It save the life of my wife who was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. God bless the Dr. who found the medicine that is used for horses today.

I am 61 years old. I was diagnosed to have Rheumatoid Arthritis 23 years ago. I have not figured out what make a person become a Rheumatoid specalist. I went to Mexico 20 years ago & have done fairly well for most of the years. Before going to Mexico the only thing that helped was steroids. I later found out that we have alternative clinics here in the US. My wonderful Dr Gunter from Camilla Ga. passed away a few years ago. I have not been able to fine a reliable Dr since. I recently hurt my wrist & trigered the Arthritis to come back in a bad way. If any one might know a reliable clinic near Thomasville Ga, please let me know. If I cant find something soon, I am going back to Mexico. My Rheumtoid Dr done about 2,000 dollars worth of X rays & blood test & said I probably had RH. I told him that I was told this 23 years ago. If DMSO would hurt you I would probably be dead. I have rubbed it in, drank it & took it intervenously. I live in the south west part of GA about 30 miles from Tallahassee Fl. Rubbing it on & taking it oral has not helped me. Thanks for any help.

I purchest a butle of DMSO, but with no description od recomendation or Company name or even how to use it.
Is it legal?
It is sold in reputable health food store, but because there is so much to go wrong with using DMSO, should it not have it's own box, with description of what is it and how to use it?
Thank you.

I got DMSO liquid from my Dr. in Mexico. I should be taking it daily, but i know that when you take it, it really makes you stink. Does anyone know an antidote you can use to stop yourself from stinking and to get rid of the smell in the house because it is ghastly.

Erin, I agree with Karen, you are fear mongering or you are ignorant of what DMSO really is and how it works. If Karen won't address it then I will in a word: FDA. Supression, this stuff simply works and they can't have that the FDA is NOT your friend people. As for DMSO pulling everything (including the kitchen sink)into your skin is not correct. Substances have to be a small enough molecule to pass through the skin. If the molecule is too big it can't pass through the skin. Simple as that. Yes you need to make sure the skin is clean but that's with ANY topical treatment. No need to get up in arms over DMSO. Erin stop spreading unnecessary fear about a substance which you obviously have FAULTY information on.

Not true about dmso, what's happening is a lot of fear-mongering, there are reasons for that but I'm not addressing those issues. My Mom's been using Painbomb w/dmso for 4 years & the only side effect she's had is that her curved arthritic fingers have straightened. She was able to completely discontinue pain meds & her depression disappeared because she wasn't in pain anymore & could do the things she couldn't when she was hurting. Google Painbomb & Reyes, hers is the first testimonial. I wish you all well & hope that the spirit of the holidays brings you many blessings & no pain.

i have researched this this chemical after a friend tried to get me to use it. anyone who has read the MSDS or reports done by doctors and chemists would know this stuff is BAD. your skin is meant to keep things out of your body, this stuff makes your skin...like its not even there. toxins can pour into your body. say you wash your hands with regular hand soap before use, do you know whats in the average hand soap? chemicals that may be ok to have on the outside of your body, but if they go right into you they are carcinogens. my friend that tried to get me to use it, hes used it for years, and he wonders why he is dying from lymphoma. i have no doubt this stuff is what caused it by letting in toxins for years.

I have never used DMSO, but my grandmother used it for years. Just be sure your skin is very clean before using. No only will DMSO pull lotion through your skin but any thing else sitting on your skin.

I agree with Bob I use DMSO and mix it with stopain just spray on almost immediate releive. Lasts for hours. I have used DMSO for 30 years with no problem it is a natural product made from tree bulk. Many Pro Sports teams use it.Go on line to Dr. Jacobs he has done years of study on DMSO. You can get DMSO at www.web vitiams.com get the 4oz bottle put 2oz in with the stopain which comes in a spray bottle and that is it.If you cannot get stopain at Walgreens go to www.I herb.com they have.

I came across a fantastic device for pain relief. I have never experienced side effects. It's a form of electro-therapy. All my friends and family have had a go with it for all their aches and pains and they all think it's great too, so I'm happy to recommend it to you. www.enart.co.uk
Good luck!

I've been using DMSO for years, because it is the only thing that takes away my pain. I have chronic tendonitis in my thumb, wrist and elbow that comes and goes. I've tried physical therapy to no avail, a TENS unit worked at one time but not long term. I mix DMSO with an arthristis pain relief spray called Stopain bought at Walgreens. The only time I have any skin irritations is when it is not diluted enough. I have seen no side effects from using this, other than immediate pain relief. I recommend this to everyone I know that lives with pain. My doctor knows about this and is fine with me using it.

I have just been told by my GP to stop using DMSO as the side effects are too bad. She has told me to use Elmore Oil which is 100% natural and won't cause me problems. I've looked on the site and read the testimonials and I've ordered a bottle as it gives a 14 day money back guarantee if not happy. Here is the testimonials page http://www.elmoreoil.co.uk/testimonials.html

Thank you

James
