Yes, we all have pain issues here. Yes, we are all willing to try new things which may relieve said pain. However, SHAME SHAME SHAME on people who use this site only to push their products. This is not a "sell something to me" site. This is a "let's try to help one another with different things that have worked for one another" site.

I have had osteoarthritis for 25 years from an accident, and a supplement I have used with success is SAM-E, a naturally occurring substance in the body that naturally decreases with age. It also is believed to help with depression and liver functions. It has made a world of difference to me.

I would like to respond to Pat R. and all others that are negative on surgery. I have had RA for 29 years and I'm 59 years old. I've been through all the RA meds and biologicals in all the combinations. Nothing really helps. The RA was so bad in my knees I had become knocked knee. I had my right knee replaced two years ago. It has helped the pain tremendously. I have had spinal surgery this year. My lumbar area was crumbling with stenosis, curvature and permanent nerve damage in my lower limbs. The surgery has resolved the excruciting pain I was sufferling and my need for Oxycotin. I will be getting my left knee replaced in a few months and not a day too soon. The way surgery, like medication, helps you is unique for each person. Always leave you mind open to try something new. I sought second opinions and references from patients before I chose a surgeon and it paid off.

Attention: Judy Marcus (post 14 July)

ALSO TO THE EDITORS: I appreciate that you need to edit out product promotion but there is little point (and some frustration) to being told in Judy's post of a great product and not to be able to find out what it is. For my part, I am desperate enough to risk publishing my email address here in the hope that Judy will contact me with the details.

I have been a qualified homoeopathic practitioner for approx 30 years. Here are the facts about Arnica: 1)Over the counter homeopathic remedies are commonly sold in 30c potencies - this means that the original plant substance has been diluted in a ratio of 1 drop to 100 drops of liquid and then "succussed" (shaken)to get the 1st potency and then one drop of that 1st potency is used to dilute 1:100 again to get the 2nd ...and so on. By the time it has been serially diluted and succussed 30 times there is no longer any molecular substance left - hence no toxic element exists! In the case of a 6c potency (commonly found in ointments) the dilution and succussion process would again have reduced the actual molecular level to almost nothing - hence again, no toxic level to be concerned about. Please note that just because there is no molecular substance to be seen under a microscope it doesn't mean that there is no healing element there. It has just changed to a different state (hopefully one day a quantum physicist will explain it all).
2)Homeopathic medicine is not specific to an illness but should be selected solely on the medicine's individual characteristics and how well these characteristics match those of the patient. ie The main guiding characteristics of Arnica is: "sore, lame, bruised feeling" and "limbs and body ache as if beaten". Hence, if your symptoms feel like this Arnica should help. Conversely, if they don't then it won't help and you may need a different homeopathic medicine.
3)Homeopathic medicine is prescribed in different potencies depending on the acuteness or chronicity of the illness. Hence, if you have Arnica symptoms and a 6 or 30 potency doesn't help then you may need a higher potency - and/or another complementary homeopathic medicine. Always best to consult a qualified homeopath.
4)Arnica can be helpful prior to and after operations. However, if the local anaesthetic is Lignocaine and Adrenaline then Arnica can reverse the adrenergic block localising the Lignocaine. So best to check with your anaesthetist prior to an op to see what they will be using. This problem does not occur with any other anaesthic.
In 30 years of practice I have yet to come across any other problems with Arnica. On the contrary, I have seen many positive results. Hope this has been of help to everyone concerned. Teri Farrar

This is the first time I have viewed this website and I am deeply saddened by the number of people that suffer from inflammation. I had a virus at age 40 that greatly weakened
my immune system and damaged my liver. I soon became queen of chronic fatigue syndrome, severe fibromyalgia, very severe osteoarthritis over most of my body and was diagnosed with a rare liver disease that would require a liver transplant. Life became very dismal. I searched all over the country for help and spent thousands of dollars looking for relief. I could not exercise because of the severe pain in every joint, muscle and cell of my body. I cried daily because of the intense intense pain. Chiropractic, accupuncture, and good supplementation became great help. But I was still in so much daily pain. One day I wrote in my journal that I felt like death itself. That day someone told me she knew of a product that may help me. I had been approached by 6 other people in a four year period to try the product. I was in such a mess physically that I was finally ready to get it a try. It was the missing piece to my puzzle. It took 3 weeks for any notice of improvement and then one area by one area, the inflammation and of course pain was gone. I went to a pain level of zero and my C-Reactive Lab test went to normal range. I was able to exercise for the first time and was able to exercise up to 6 days a week. I was written up in one of the exercise facility's magazines. I was given my health back as well as my life. If inflammation is the bottom line of most all diseases, I am so very grateful that I found something that could be this powerful and have no side effects at all and be completely natural. I now can have a life once again and thank God for letting me find this amazing relief.

Hello everyone. I have been reading many of the comments listed here. Just wanted you all to be award of something. If you have RA, Osteoarthritis, Lupus, RSD, Lyme Disease, juvenile Diabetes etc, you also have an AUTOIMMUNE disease. There are over 80 of them and thousands of people have one or more of them and do NOT know it. Science has discovered that this is genetic. Each of us has an autoimmune marker in our DNA that may- or may NOT become active if there is a trigger- such as an accident or some type of surgery. That is why so many of us feel better ALL over when we are on antibiotics for ONE condition. It works to help ALL autoimmune diseases ! I discovered this when getting antibiotics for a sinus infection- EVERYTHING felt better. Go to the national website for autoimmune disease - WWW.AARDA.ORG. Learn about WHY you feel so bad and what you can do about it !

Note: Fibromyalgia is not yet beliveed to be strictly an autoimmune disease , BUT it accompanies most other autoimmune problems and as such, I believe should be listed as one !

Check also- the NIH.GOV website and read about autoimunnity.

Best of luck to ALL of you in pain- I KNOW what you are going through, as I have 3 autoimmune problems ! God bless us all and help the scientists to find a cure for us -soon !

Thanks for the comments. I appreciate the editors comment that every person is different and that what works for one may not work for others. I appreciate the arthritis foundation and other org or gov resources for research based advice and especially cautions on supplements!
I have RA and fibromyalgia (25 years) and am doing well on a combination of DMARD and supplements. I am using an older disease modifier-minocycline, an antiobiotic which is often used for acne in teenagers! Along with my prescription med, what REALLY helps is vitamin D (recommended by my rheumatologist at 2000 a day), which reduces muscle pain more than anything. Also good quality omega 3 oil (2 grams a day), ground flax seed and generic antioxidant juice blend (acai, noni, goji, mangosteen) and ginger capsules.Teaching water exercise (in a jogging belt, prayer and eating alot of fruits and vegies help keep me as healthy and positive as possible.

I have osteoarthritis of the knee caps and OA also moving into my hips. I have had arthroscopy then kneecap replacement on my right knee with the left one also needing to have a replacement. They say down the road both will need total replacements. I am 50 now having several years of pain in hips to knees. I went to 4 Dr. before getting help and really being listened to. I am overweight and working to lose this, walk about 1 mile a day, work full-time, now looking at going to pool for water aerobics. I am meds for high blood pressure, meloxicam for knee (insurance won't cover the celebrex that helped me more), potassium supplement, lasix (water weight in feet and lower legs), rest of meds related to asthma and allergies which do not help me. I sleep an average of 2 -3 hours per night due to constant aching from my hips to my calves in BOTH legs. I toss and turn a lot. Laying on my back is the best but need ice gel packs a lot to have relief. Any suggestions?I need sleep and relief from the pain. The tylenol just doesn't do it.

Eating a healthy diet of fresh raw fruits and vegetables are certainly a way to heal the body and inflammation.Cooked food is dead food. There are alot of great recipes on the web for Living Foods. If you change the way you eat, you will certainly have a big impact on disease prevention, and control. Try it you may like it. You need to eat, so what do you have to lose ?

I have RA and since I am diabetic and already taking more pills than i care to, I have been looking for a natural pain reliever. I have a friend that is an herbalist but she recommended I ask someone else first. My doctor wants to give me more chemicals but after reading up on them I'm not all that impressed and i don't want any more risks to my health...diabetes is enough for me! Can you recommend something?

I have suffered with psoriatic arthritis since I was 19 years old and I am now 50. i also have fibromyalgia. I have been on methotrexate for over 25 years and have tried nearly every NSAID on the market. I took Remicade for the past year, but recently stopped it because of the awful side effects. I have been taking pain pills(hydrocodone) for years also, but with very little relief. These have been causing stomach problems and i also worry about kidney and liver damage from these drugs. There is only one thing that has given me adequate pain relief with no side effects, but unfortunately it is illegal and that is marijuana. There are so many people like me who suffer with constant pain and if this can help us, I don't understand why the government won't legalize it. I think that all states should follow Californias lead and make it possible for us to legally get the help we so desperately need.

I have bone on bone in knees and hands. I use Gluicosamine, Chondroitin and Hyaluronic Acid. I take 100mg of HA a day. I take them in individual doses not a combined pill - it seems to work better that way taken about 15 minutes apart. I am in my 60's, still riding my horse and taking care of my barn (feed, stalls and turn out for 6 horses).

I also use CryoDerm (Arnica, Boswells ILEX & MSM) roll on for 'spot' pain - it works great!

Hello Marci and Fellow Readers,
Yes, we're listening. Thank you all for your comments and inquiries. It's important to remember a therapy that works for one, may not work for others. Always consult your doctor before trying something new, whether it's a supplement, exercise program or over-the-counter medication.

All the best,

ARTHRITiS FOUNDATION ARE YOU LISTENING? "I used to take the prescription medications, but I was worse off from the side-effects." I concur this a 1000 times over. I am much healthier on the supplements. I am only disappointed that I could take boatloads of fish oil sam-E and others that my health insurance won't cover. It's killing me.

Here's who got me started in the right direction (for me). Skip Shoden CCN, here's his website : http://www.hghealth.com/skip.html.

Also a great research source is the National Institute of Health (NIH).

http://ods.od.nih.gov/Health_Information/Health_Information.aspx

They have a FULL LIST OF supplements and current research on many of them by the USA. :) Hang in there people! :)

I an 70 yrs old,was in a bad auto accident in 1993 and now suffer from OA. In 2009 i cold not raise my arms higher than my waist. I was told by two surgeons that they would not touch my shoulders but if I was interested in surgery, I should contact Dr. Mark Frankle at Florida Orthopedic Institute in Tampa FL. I have had both shoulders replaced, still healing, but can wash and comb my own hair and dress myself again. I was told that it would take at least one year fo each shoulder to heal completely and be able to raise my arms over my head. I am getting there slowly and the pain is gone.
God Bless,
Tina

Arnica and Aconitum are sold as homeopathic medicines (not supplements). These are regulated by the FDA and considered completely safe. Homeopathic remedies are highly diluted medicines that no longer have the harmful effects of the original substance. Arnica is most often used for traumatic injuries to muscles and joints. Aconitum is frequently used for the shock due to a traumatic situation, or the after-effects of trauma and shock.

I have had Arthritis in my knees for a number of years. I had replacement in left knee and doctor wants to do it in my right knee. The recovery was long time coming. I was off work for 3 months. Took arthritis medication and caused ulcers. Only can take Vicodin. Helps, but causes me to be sleepy at work and doesnt always take all the pain away. Tylenol PM to sleep at night.

Breakthrough. A person gave me some Joint MD and I have been taking it for a week now and the Arthritis pain , is much less. In my sholders and wrists and hands. Knees are better too. Has any one else used joint MD?

Please Email me. Pros and cons...Doctor said I could try Glucosmine, But this doesn't have it. Has Ginger and Green Tea and MSM and other ingredents. Hopefully long term will be great. Please Email me asap. Along with others I might try. God Bless you and I pray your pain subsides.

This is my first go around with reading letters. I, too, have just about everything that everyone else has. I have avoided any surgery or replacement joints just because I have had enough! But I am in pretty constant pain and am going next week to a pain clinic referred by our neurologist. I also take Vicodin daily-prescribed by my primary physician. The people I know who have had surgery seem to be in no better shape than I am. I don't think there is a miracle cure. I do believe all you can do is learn to live with it and accept all the pain relief you can get. Besides, I'm 76 and don't intend to live forever so why put myself thru more trial and errors --- oh yes, went to a chiropractor for about 2 months and nearly went bankrupt, but I felt better!

This message is in response to Laura Black's email. Thank you Laura...that was very helpful 'heads up' and I'll take your advice about seeing an oral surgeon. In the meantime, I'm doing a personal experiment and that is, not taking Actonel for a couple of months to see if the joint/muscle pain diminishes. At this time I can't tell if it's the med or that my OA is getting worse very quickly. As with most things...time will tell. I'll check back and offer a report on my findings.

I've taken 5-HTP in the past & it helped. My issue is that I don't usually get to dedicate more than 4-6 hours of sleep most nights. So, when I was taking 5-HTP, it was either difficult to get up or I was very tired when I got up in the morning:

http://www.doctormurray.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=14 0

From this site:
Detailed analysis of all the evidence by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) led to the conclusion that the cause of the EMS epidemic could be traced to one Japanese manufacturer, Showa Denko. Of the six Japanese companies which supplied L-tryptophan to the United States, Showa Denko was the largest supplying 50-60%.

I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia, Peripheral Neuropathy, & Arthritis about 10 years ago. I've taken a lot of different medications, including pain medication (mostly Hydrocodone), but recently I started taking Suboxone. I began taking it back in Nov. 2009 (not because I was abusing opiates), and it has helps more than anything else I've tried. It seems to help with (what I associate with) the nerve pain, more than anything. I have also started taking Vyvanse & this made me realize that being tired all of the time is what was bringing me down the most.

I suffer from chronic pain due to osteoarthritis, spinal stenois, degenertive disc diease, and have taken alot of prescribed medications-not good for the body-to many side effects-so now I drink red cider vinegar everyday- 9 rasins soaked in gin a day-and I do Jack Lalanes juicing everyday-a little walk and feeling almost 100 percent better. I have had to many friends who have had kidney failure and liver damage due to the medications that are precribed for this type of pain.

Be careful with anything you take and pay attention to your body. About 18 months ago I was hospitalized with inflamations of the pancreas, liver, and gall bladder. Had to have gall bladder removed. Doc told me that if I had waited three weeks to seek help, I likely would have died of liver failure. The cause? Cymbalta. This is a RARE side effect but can happen. I suggest that you insist on regular blood tests. This information is now on the Cymbalta commercial so doctors are more informed on this.

This message is for Jo - and any others interested in taking Boniva, Actonel or other bone fortifying drugs. PLEASE HAVE AN ORAL EXAMINATION FIRST BY A QUALIFIED ORAL SURGEON -NOT YOUR DENTIST!!!! My poor mother lost almost half her teeth due to necrosis of the jaw bone (a "possible small side effect" with "low incidence") My mom developed abcesses and bone LOSS because of the drug she was taking to PREVENT bone loss! Her surgeon told her everyone that should have an oral exam before taking those drugs; he's gotten a lot of patients from women taking those drugs and doing what they thought would help them, but hurt them instead. Her surgeon said he told his wife she was NOT to go on it, he wouldn't allow it. For some it has benefits, but please ladies, get the oral exam FIRST and make sure you're not at risk for tooth loss or necrosis of your jaw bone!

I have had FMS since '91, and osteoarthritis forever, it seems. After my 8th back surgery, my pain Dr. suggested Cymbalta, and that has really helped. Perhaps it will for some of you as well. It is recommended for depression and fibromyalgia and seems to help me stay focused better. Good thing, since I am writing a book!

I have just come upon this website by accident. I have been browsing, as an arthritis sufferer, because I have found no relief from fish oil and was looking for some answers or alternatives. I have not tried any doctor prescribed drugs for relief, as yet, but am getting close to thinking that there may be no alternative. However, I have gained new hope from all these communications and intend to try a few other things before making such a drastic decision. I must say that I agree with those who say that even natural remedies must be included in the "unsafe" category, even if only to remind us that there is good and bad in almost everything in life, and because we apparently all react differently to substances applied to our bodies, whether internally or externally.
To repeat the caution I will say "RESEARCH"

5 drops of peppermint oil. (If you don't have peppermint oil, melt about 5 pieces in some water and pour into mixture and shake very well. After mixing all ingredients pour into several glass containers and drink throughout the day, maybe three or four times. Keep refrigerated.
Cut fruit and onion into pieces. Place in juicer with i/4 cup of water. Add garlic, and peppermint oil. Medical value of each item used: Grapefruit: High in vitamin C which is an immune system strengthener. Grapefruits are valuable as it aids the body of eliminating poisons. It started with our fourth baby that I had later in life I was practicaly 40, anyhow my doctor suggested I lose weight, i did and the pain went away mildly for awhile, 5 yrs later its back. I used expensive magnectic knee braces help somewhat, tried costly flexplex, triplex, and even life ext pills nothing, BUT rubbed alittle muscle rub from THE DOLLAR STORE on it took all of 3 min to work!! My advice try everything your worth it!My mission now is to continue working out and to find a rub without a strong scent. GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!!

This is in response to Joan Lichter (3/12/10) re: the fact she "received bad news" about her shoulder having osteoarthritis and an eventual shoulder replacement by a "special" shoulder surgeon. She's seeking knowledge "of a product that could possibly slow the deterioration/ease the pain so it might not be so drastic". Well, as a matter of fact Joan, I feel I could have something that can really help you. I have been involved with helping a company promote an external Arthritis Spray that is showing fantastic results for many people, including myself. What I like about this product is that it is not a "forever taking remedy". I In fact, I am trying to help the company find interested doctors to conduct clinical trials( with free samples) to enhance our efforts of showing how this product can save many from this devastating crippling disease. If you send me an e-mail or respond to my comment, I would be happy to send you some information and you can decide for yourself. Once you feel comfortable, we can at some point even talk with one another. I would not pressure you for anything and seek to answer any questions you may have honestly. Hope to hear from you---

Have you seen a Physical Therapist or Occupational Therapist for pain relief advice and task modification advice?

I have received bad news about my shoulder having osteoarthritis and an eventual shoulder replacement by a "special" shoulder surgeon. But I'd like to know if anyone has knowledge of a product that could possibly slow the deterioration/ease the pain so it might not be so drastic. I've been told I've got tears in rotator cuff as well. I know that I have beginnings of arthritis symptoms in other areas of my body which scares me because of how bad it can get. I've tried Osteo Bi-Flex pills with minimal results (gluc./chond., etc.). I went to my local health food store and picked up another product (shark cartilage), but after reading, you must take large quantities of it and I'm afraid I'll turn into "Jaws". Then I noticed another product which I'll discuss once I see if any good results come from it. I'm fatigued alot and have slightly lower red/white cell count than I believe is normal. I'm wondering if that's because of the "arthritis" trying to get me down. Plus, I have been a chronic sinusitis sufferer for many years (with deviated septum). My allergist of many years felt an operation wouldn't help. Now, I learned my brother had a nose operation for which he had dramatically improved in the beginning. Now, he hasn't had quite the positive results, but still better than before his operation. That is on my list, but money is a problem with large deductible for hospital (as in-patient). I wish I could get some feedback as to which should be done first: my shoulder pains me so bad, followed by my tailbone (thought was hips, but x-ray said hips are ok for now - I pray the Lord will allow that to stay ok while I'm suffering so bad). Tailbone was injured over 20 plus years ago and I know why that hurts. But don't understand my shoulder problem. I am also on a B/P medicine, so I need to be cautious about what natural products I can take. Any helpful suggestions would be appreciated. I need some hope for a less painful future.

Attn Kathy Midkiff: I've had same experience and have no answers. Have you had any luck finding out why?? I have history of Lupus/Lyme Disease/Fibromyalgia and many other things, but no proof exists to tell me if Lyme is still an issue. That was the only reason I could think of for feeling better while on Cipro. It was extremely noticeable and I did mention to my dr. Curious if you have any answers...

Now that you have printed this list, will you please print a "medications to avoid" list?

The medications I have been given/offered for sacroiliitis have given me a nasty rash, or they are contra-indicated because of concerns of high bood pressure... and the list of potential side effects are arm's length.

Age 48, at age 6 JRA Systemic (Stills Disease) in wheelchair 2 yrs.Recovered until severe inflammation returned at age 13. Always prescribed penicillen tablet along with high doses of cortisone. Getting older I have noticed I feel better all over when I am taking antibiotics! Has anyone noticed improvement when taking antibiotics? I feel tired and when taking a dose of antibiotics I notice an overall improvement in various symptoms. I have not been concerned with my medical history until the last 2 years as i am wearing down and know this can go hand in hand with mild inflamation. Let me know if anyone notices a difference when on antibiotics please. Thank You

I have had osteoarthritis since the age of 45 and have been on different medications with usually good results for some time and then they quit working and I have to switch. The best thing I have ever done was to have laser spine surgery. A neuro-surgeon described the prodedure he would do to correct all the damage in my lower back, bone spurs, bulging discs, spinal stenosis and more. I decided I did not want to do the drastic conventional surgery and did a lot of research into the laser surgery. What a life-saver. Check into it!

I've been suffering for 20 years with fybro and now I have RA...oh joy...just more pain added to the pain I already have right?...lol I started taking "Honey", Cinnamon" and "Acai berry" and to be honest I can feel a difference...a big difference with NO SIDE EFFECTS!!! My aches and pains are less in intensity and I don't have to take near as many of my RXed pain meds (my goal is to get off all pain meds), and as a bonus I have noticed a HUGE improvement in my skin appearance! I'm in no way saying to rush out and get these supplements but it might be worth a try IF you talk to your doctor first and make sure none of these supplements will hurt you or interfere with the meds you are taking now! I'm all for anything that will actually work with NO SIDE EFFECTS! I refuse to take NASIDS btw, death will find me soon enough!

As to the controversy, it does not matter if the number of reactions to a medication (prescription or alternative/natural) is 1 or 1 million - by law it must be listed as a possible side effect or reaction. So, as many of you stated, do your research. Everyone's system is different. What works well for one, could easily be poison to another. Please remember this as we are all being so critical to each other's opinions. Personally, I would prefer to know what potential side effects, etc. are possible before I try something new. Doesn't mean I won't try it - just means I will do my research first.

As for relief - I, too, suffer from fibro, osteo, degenerative disk disease, & diabetes. I found a product quite by accident that I can no longer be without! I have been a long time devotee of GNC due to their product quality. I found a product called TriFlex - OMG when I do run out, I notice it within just a couple of days. The achiness & joint pains start coming back. I have tried OTC brands that have done nothing or have seriously irritated by system. This one has made a huge impact on my daily living. So as survivors of these painful horrors - DO YOUR RESEARCH NO MATTER WHAT ROUTE YOU TAKE!

I have osteoarthritis. I've had both hips replaced, and have the doctors recommending both my knees be next, but I can't afford the time off of work. I've taken MSM for almost 10 years with great success, and take Aleve, too, and a recommended dosage of calcium and D are also helping.
What I want to know is about DIET. I know that lots of pain from inflammation can be avoided by eating the right things and eliminating those that cause the inflammation and pain--like tomatoes, eggplants (nightshades)--but what else? When I went on websites to check it out, they were a complete runaround--click on this one and went right back to where I started! Who has THESE answers?

Arnica did not work at all for my RA.

Also, tried Ginger for several months, and it did not help either.

I take 3 mg of Prednisone, Doxycycline, probiotics, and several vitamins and supplements daily. Take Aleve when it's really bad. (The probiotics keep me from getting sick due to the Doxcycline killing the good bacteria along with the bad).

Have recently been drinking Certo gel in a small amount of Welch's Concord Grape Juice, but don't know if it helps.

Have read good things about Turmeric and may try that.

Years ago, Vitamin E helped my knees when I couldn't bend them at work and also helped my carpal tunnel in wrists.

I take 1-2 capsules of fish oil capsules at night now.

Glad I ran across this site and thanks to all for their helpful comments!

In regard to supplements, I have RA, and a year ago started taking red yeast rice supplements to lower my cholesterol. the RYR worked great for that, but unbeknownst to my doctors it apparently can cause joint pain and inflammation. Fortunately I found a nurse who knew that. I stopped the RYR and had amazing relief from the amount of pain my RA causes. Anyone else had that experience with red yeast rice?

Hello all you people out there who feel that certain supplements and herbs should not have been on the list of "don't takes"... I think it right that those listed should be on here BECAUSE for SOME people (and enough in the past) those serious effects have occurred. Not everyone has the same body/genetic makeup. You might be able to take arnica, but I cannot take it EVEN in homepathic medicines in minute quantities.
Why does everyone think they know a magic cure-all that everyone can and should be able to take because that person takes it and it works for that person without any side effects??? GET REAL! This is NOT a 'one size" or "one drug" or "one herb" fits all people equally world.
People SHOULD be informed if there are KNOWN side effects that can be dangerous, particulalry ones that can cause death.
Hey, I am allergic to TYLENOL--and it makes my blood not clot. After years of fighting with doctors over this, guess what? Other people have been found to be allergic, some with the same side effects. Doctors now know that Tylenol can also cause other serious problems in people, including liver and kidney damage. And what about Ibruprofen, pushed all these years as a harmless and effective non prescription anti- inflammatory/pain reliever? Now they know it too can cause kidney damage.
And how about the St. John's Wort that so many people take for depression? My liver specialist told me of a case they had where the person needed an immediate liver transplant--a person who had been healthy without any liver problems-- that the herb virtually 'disintegrated' his liver.
SO why SHOULD'NT natural remedies be listed with known and dangerous possible side effects with that such? Don't we have a right to know? It would be a dis-service to the rest of us if they were not listed. People need information to make informed decisions. DO you think it better to take something, have a serious reaction, even life-threatening one, and then say "well how could I know that might happen? I never saw anything saying it could be dangerous, no one ever told me." THINK, RESEARCH AND KNOW YOURSELF BEORE YOU TAKE SOMETHING, be it a manufactured drug, a supplement, an herb or even just a simple tea.
Final share: you know that much hyped tea ROOBIOS with so many good qualities, even listed on my health providers site as "no known side effects? I have an allergic reaction with itching and rash...need I say anymore?

I have osteo arthritits and fibromyalgia - my primary care physician, rheumatologist, and orthopedic surgeon (knee replacements) have prescribed large amounts of Vit. D and it has helped the pain ( from fibro especially ). Hooray!

The weather still affects my joints (Grandma wasn't crazy after all ) but to a lesser extent. The orthopedist said most of his patients with fibromyalgia test low for blood levels of Vit.D.

I have been suffering from OA for years, I also have scoliosis. I have had epidurals, therapy, shots for blockage. The only thing that has helped and not a great deal is hydrocodon...but it is hard to get a Dr. to give it to you. I am fine when sitting or laying down. Up 5 minutes and I am in so much pain I have to sit down. Recently have been on natural product from the Greek Isles, guarenteed to help...so far after 2 wks. it has not helped....they even sent me a free supply and I take two a day..but not any help yet??? Would appreciate any help other then surgery, I refuse to go under the knife.....thanks.

To Martie & Karen,

I have osteoarthritis and found my miracle medicine a couple of years ago. Three years ago I could hardly walk and the therapist told me my hips were just about to lock. At the time I was on 6 Tylenol arthritis plus pain medicine daily. Along with pain patches you name it. I found FLEXANOL and tied it with noticeable relief. People can say what they want about Supplements, but I feel much better taking these than I did when I was taking all the other medication. My therapist could not believe how I could bend and I even dance. You can take up to 5 a day, but I only take two a day. Flexanol has made a big difference in my life.

I use Arnica and other supplements and am disappointed that Arthritis Today would publish an article of this sort. The title of this article is disturbing to say the least. How about "Nine Prescription Drugs to Avoid"?? I have severe allergies to most prescription pain medicines, but have not had complications with supplements.

I have osteoarthritis and take Limbrel (a prescription medical food), but also have to supplement using Arnica, Turmeric and eat pineapple for inflammation and pain.

I would like to know what studies were done and who performed the studies and what dosages/levels are considered dangerous or unhealthy rather than random statements that I am supposed to take as fact.

Extremely disappointed, Karen

SAMe and tryptophan were banned due to a bad batch being made, bacteria are thought to be the cause of esosinophilia myalgia syndrome (EMS)and not tryptophan. To make sure that risks are assessed see a nutritionist before getting any nutritional supplement as they can assess risks, interactions with drugs and any nutritional deficiencies you may have. Treat the cause not cover up the symptoms.

I think that whoever decided L-tryptophan had those bad side effects should know that I have FMS and all the doctor prescribed meds' side effects are so bad that the enamel on my teeth is gone despite all the available remedies. And that is just the beginning of my side effect list.

I received a reduced shipping coupon for L-tryptophan from FMAware for a web-site that sells the sleep supplement. Apparently they do not think there are bad side effects.

As an owner of a supplement store, an arthritis sufferer, and a supplement user, the last two being the most important to me, I take offense to some of the supplements on the "do not take" list. Arnica in proper doses is safe. There are no known drug interactions other than possibly blood thinners. I know personally of 2 local physicians that have seen the results of using Arnica tabs prior to surgery. Much less bruising, faster healing, less swelling.

As for L-Tryptophan, that claim is, in my personal opinion, totally out of whack. Are these also the side effects of eating TURKEY??? What do you think makes you sleepy after eating turkey? The amino acid L-Tryptophane!!! Any and all supplements must be purchased from a reputable company and taken in the recommended doses. Has anyone noticed that the side effects listed above are also almost always seen on the side effect list of PRESCRIPTION medications as prescribed doses?

Accupuncture has done wonders for my RA. The pharmaceutical companies want you to buy drugs not herbs. For me, natural has been the way to go. Medicines have only brought me to place of massive side effects and dependency. I will continue some medicines for short periods of time. The body holds on to these strong chemicles much longer than it does herbal and botanical ingredients which are much more easily assimulated by our system. Please note that this cite is also sponsored by a phamaceutical company. That could very well be why so many natural products are on there hit list.

I was reading some of the comments and noticed one that said natural products take a while to start working because they are not loaded with chemicals. I am a chemist and I can tell you that natural products are chemicals. Some are natural and others are manmade but they are all chemicals. Lest you think all natural products are harmless remember that in the middle ages they used natural products to poison people. Natural products can be very good for you but you have to do your research.

I take a number of supplements and love it! I was at deaths door back in 2004. My doctor diagnoissed me with UNDIFFERENTIATED CONNECTIVE TISSUE DISEASE which is more than one auto - immune disease flareing up at a time. I have RA,Fibromyalgia,Osteao.,DDD,DDJ, Lupus and more. I have had several spine surgeries Cervical (neck) Lumbar stillhave 3 more spine surgeries to go through same area with one in Thoracic. They had me on all kinds of prescriptions, we have tried so many different meds.Even Infusions Just got taken off Orencia it stopped working. I wake up and go though out the day and night in lots of pain and swollen, sore joints, fingers elbows, shoulders, knees, ankles and toes! I live off of a certian pain med. that I am tring to get off of. I was orginally on a very high dose but I am down to 10mg. 4 times a day as of today. I take Noni juice from Tahiti9 only) Mango Xanjuice,These two I feel God lead me to them! They saved my life but of course God is who gets the real credit! I now take Honeybee Pollen, Ribose chewable,Vit. B-12,These I take just for energy. I have severe fatigue. I can tell a great big difference when not on them. I also take more supplements several more if anyone is interested in my list please e-mail
Once again I give credit to the one it is due and that is my maker GOD !!! If not for him I would not have found the 2 juices that got me up out of bed. There is quite a bit of supplements out there but as with anything you have to research and study and use common sense!
As for the manmade Prescriptions yes it is true they can be very very bad for us. It is all BIG PHARMACIA they use it to make money off us. There are cures but if we were all cured at the 1st office visit where would they be? Again supplements, vitiamins are safe and most are made from Gods green earth
So do your work and follow up and research and use as it says.

I agree with the comment made by retired nurse Janet on July 22nd. I too take natural supplements to ease the pain of Rheumatoid Arthritis. I used to take the prescription medications, but I was worse off from the side-effects. I had to search until I found something that works for me. I now take tumeric, natural joint, and sometimes I add a little ginger to my tea. I'm not totally without pain, but I don't have the side effects of using prescription medications. Nurse Janet, if you can give me any more suggestions, I would greatly apprecite it. e-mail me at barlowjoanne@yahoo.com. Thank you

I don't know anything about L-tryptophan's effectiveness for arthritis, but the comment about it being illegal in the US is way out of date. There was a ban on tryptophan supplements for some time because a serious illness (EMS) had a suspected link to a contaminated batch of tryptophan supplements, but insufficient data was found to substantiate that link in a FDA report released in 2001, and the ban was rescinded in 2002.

Perhaps the owner(s) of this page might take some time to check or update the facts?

The Bombay Gin and raisin cure seems to be very effective in relieving the joint pain of
arthritis, so says the many forums on the subject I have read.....The best gin to use is Bombay because it contains juniper berries and 9 other botanicals. What you do is soak a bunch of "golden raisins" in a bowl of the Bombay gin for 2 weeks, or until all of the gin has evaporated. Then eat 7 raisins a day....The golden raisins contain "sulphur dioxide, similar to MSM, the darker raisins do not...Try this famous cure-all first before you try anything unnatural...If you are allergic to "sulfides," then do not try this cure.

I am a retired nurse.I have seen the results of the pharmasutical industry and the side effects that it has caused.I have seen people taking meds for the side effects.I am 53,haven't been to a doctor for 25 years, and yes, I do have arthritis, depression, and found more relief and less side effects from natural herbs. You must do your research and not pick the first company that comes along.Yes, it takes a few weeks for any herb to kick in,because it's not loaded with chemicals to help it,that's why it is called a natural treatment.Taken as directed, not in excess and it will work.

I am a baby boomer with no current health problems but a great deal of my friends have arthritis. This is why i Subscripe to this newsletter because it is very informed. However, there is a growing industry in seattle and it is called alternative medicine and it is on the increase. Why? Why would anyone want to take 30 or 40 pills a day when there is no scientic evidence that these pills work.I sold vitamins and i have seen how the companies push these pills are cure alls.Vitamins arent pills...they are drugs and some of them contain stuff in there
that can harm you.Look at vitamin c.A new study shows that vitamin c does not stop colds and that goes for this omega 3 and fish oil.Vitamin D in large quantities can harm you.My late boyfriend was taking a great deal of this and too much D is bad for the kidneys. Can we all use common sense and not the advice of Oprah? Oprah is on the verge of destroying common sense when it comes to serious ailments and some of the advice on her show I dont take because it is faulty and can harm you..so why is she still popular?

You say you "found some proprietary preparations for joints that was made from natural, well respected ingredients. ...and have suffered no deformities of my joints."
--I have been on 5mg Prednizone, 20mg/wk.Methotrexate and 2,000mg Sulfazine for 14 years. Still I'm extremely fatigued and deformities are setting in. I would love to stop all of it. I tried to get off the Prednizone very gradually--told my RA doc and he gave me Salsalate and Voltarin Gel. When down to no Prednizone I felt terrible. Doc gave me a shot & I went back on Prednizone. The new meds sound kinda scarry. Wish I could learn more about what you did.

Florence and Ellie,
I agree with your comments. I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid arthritis 15 years ago. The doctors put me on non-steroidals as well as methotrexate. I used to feel tired and exhausted all the time and my joints felt terrible. Then I found some proprietary preparations for joints that was made from natural, well respected ingredients. I have been off the medicines for 11 years now and have suffered no deformities of my joints. When I got on these products, the doctors were ready to put me on steroids. Thank God I didn't have to do that or else I would be sufferring from all kinds of side effects from those. I am not necessarily saying that drugs are bad and must be avoided, but I am saying that there are proven and useful remedies out there that work. But beware of the false claims and make sure the products are manufactured properly.

Arnica is an Excellent product, both topical and ingested. L-tryptophan is naturally occurring in Turkey - should we take that off the market too? Unfortunately there was a bad batch of L-trptophan.

Every Supplement mentioned is safe when used properly. Just because the Pharmaceutical companies can not are not able to make killing on the products does not make them dangerous or bad. These products are manufactured under safety guidelines and one can request Assay and R&D information.

Natural Remedies have been around a lot longer than synthetic drugs. Besides, have you ever thought about where drugs came from? Herbs, roots, etc. Homeopathic Remedies have been around longer than pharmaceuticals and Chinese Med./herbs too.

Maybe your article should have been written a little differently: Let your physician know what supplements you are taking that are working for you. Make sure your Pharmacist knows the supplements you are using before you start a new drug so he/she can run a Drug Interaction.

Let's face it, there are more lethal and non reversable side effects to Prescription Drugs than there are to herbs and Homeopathic Remedies which have been around for Centuries!!!!

I was interested to read others' comments on arnica. I have used it _topically_ with success. First experience with it was an "Arnica & Joint Massage" at the Calistoga Ranch in CA. To date, _still_ the best massage I have ever had. I bought some Kneipp arnica oil afterward. Rub it on your joints and muscles after a hot bath or shower -- great! Perhaps the warnings should have clarified ORAL vs TOPICAL uses.

I have recently found out that due to the 4 surgeries I've had from an auto accident has left my entire thorasic vertebrae inundated with arthritis. They fused my neck, now I have spurs.I have such a difficult time with the pain, sleepiness. I go to a pain MD to get epiderals only to last a week or two. I get so depressed with useless quality of Life. I was so active, I'm a sculptor and need input for natural healing. Thanks for reading.

i used arnica for 5-6 yrs. after having 65 injections in the abdominal wall 8-10 wks a yr. i then could swim although i am non-weight bearing and that is the best exercise
for a whole lot of chronic pains. without it i could not even straighten out on the bed which has been pretty much the only place i am when i am at home per docs orders.

In New zealand we used to use Green Lipped Mussel Powder in our horses feed to treat arthritis. It is amazing, our 32 year old horse could not be ridden but after treating her with Green Lipped Mussel Powder in her feed she was soon able to go on short rides again.

I had a respected surgeon tell me to take arnica when healing from a surgery. I take various supplements daily, HOWEVER, I must say that anything that is not regulated can be risky. I have also had heart valve damage from a medication that was a researched and regulated medication that is now not on the market. That was risky too. I am on Methotrexate and other stuff. THE KEY IS to weigh the risks vs the benefits.

I take Adrenal rebuilder (derived from bovine organs) for the last couple of months now due to adrenal fatigue. I find that I am no longer needing to sleep an excessive amount to function. I have more energy to socialize and exercise.

Once you have to take meds like methotrexate that wage war on your body....my liver shut down and I got mono, bronchitis, and pneumonia back to back. The thought of some alleged potential contaminants isn't scary. Besides how much of our food is not contaminated or over processed? To eat fish for the omega 3 content or worry about mercury? That is the question..... How about try everything and see what works for you. Listen to your body's responses and you can never go wrong with your health.

I hate cortisone more than any other drug that I have been treated with for my S.L.E.. I never had a weight problem now I do!I had a back operation to replace disc and a fusion in my neck. I believe it was caused by the cortisone.I have reflux and cannot take any of the med for arthiritus.I only take painkillers when I have to and rest as often as I can, try to eat healthy and do some exercise. I also take supplements omega 3, calsium and a good multivitamin.Nothing helps for the tiredness. My medical aid will only pay for cortisone and antimalaria drugs I find they do more harm than good.

I dont believe arnica is bad I have used it for 2 years now. I was unable to walk after surgery on both knees. after 7 days of using super crema milagro with arnica from Mexico I can say the cream is like vaseline and you rub it deep into the skin and it works like magic! I can say that you can die from arnica if you DRINK IT it is not made to drink. but!!! it is good for inflamation and it takes the pain away. also kombucha tea is good for you. depends? on how you make it? I have lots of friends who grow it and pepare it to drink. laurelfarms.com person who grows it you can order from them.IF it is bad for you why have they not shut down LAUREL FARMS??? She is the QUEEN of KOMBUCHA. I would try any nautral remedy 1st before putting a MANMADE DRUG into my body!!!!

That info warning against 5htp is way illogical if you look into it...
http://eosinophilia-myalgia.net/
contaminated 5htp was a man-made issue that has since been corrected by safe practices in the processing and importing of supplements. Its an amazing supplement...look into it for depression and anxiety due to the arthritis...its wonderful.

There's a difference between using an herb topically (rubbing on the outside of your body) and ingesting (swallowing) it. This category of herbs/supplements are described as ones to avoid 'taking'. It is both infor-mative and interesting that you were helped by applying arnica gel to joints and/or pain-ful muscles, bones. I'm going to try it.

i use arnica gel all of the time and it works wonders! i cant believe that this is on this list. i completely disagree. its funny, we are not suppose to take certain things and yet is okay to fill us up with prescription drugs that have horrid side affects.
