The Facts About Supplements

Thinking about supplementing your diet? Understand the definitions of vitamins and supplements.

Q: What are dietary supplements?

Dietary supplements, including plant-and animal-derived products, are not classified as or considered to be drugs, but that doesn’t mean they can’t act like them. To be classified as a dietary supplement, a product must be taken by mouth and contain a “dietary ingredient” – that is, a substance intended to be taken in addition to, not instead of, healthy foods. Overall, dietary supplements include vitamins, minerals, botanicals, amino acids and any part of those substances, such as extracts or concentrates.

Q: Why do I need to talk to my doctor about the supplements I take or want to take?

Plants produce chemicals just as people and animals do. Those chemicals, while from a source found in nature, can have effects on the body ranging from mild to potent, just like chemicals produced in a laboratory. Because supplements are, in fact, chemicals, they have the potential to interact with chemicals in manmade medications. That’s why you need to get the go-ahead from your doctor about supplements – not just once but each and every time you consider trying one.

Q: How are dietary supplements different from medication?

When you go to the pharmacy to pick up a prescription, you have three layers of protection between you and the product. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has reviewed and approved it, your doctor has considered your history and prescribed it, and your pharmacist alerts you to possible interactions with other medications you’re taking. Even with an over-the-counter medication, there’s the FDA layer of protection, and your pharmacist is accessible to answer questions. But with a dietary supplement, there are no protective layers between your hand and the product on the shelf.

Dear Readers: I, too, have many of the muscle/joint disease you have discussed. I do not want to take any more pharmaceutical drugs so have been researching Holistic and Herbal remedies. I have to tell you that my liver enzymes are perfect after 16 years of problems and I credit "coffee enemas." Research this. Also, the fibryo pain has been helped by fresh Ginger tea. Research this also. I feel 70% better since I have been doing/using these two remedies. CAUTION...one can still "over do" when they are feeling sooo good! I messed up my knees again by spending too much time weeding a flower bed. I simply have to memorize the meaning of "moderation."

I had my right knee replaced on June 18, 2010 and still have severe pain in that knee whenever I exercise. My doctor took an x-ray and said everything looks fine. Any suggestions other than getting a second opinion by another doctor? Has anyonre else experienced pain after a year of physical therapy? I take 4 advils twice a day along with fish oil and vitamin D.

My doctor has finally given me some answers as to why my knee hurt so much, and it is no surprise as I have already shown osteoarthritis in my ankle, fingers and degenerative disk disease in my lower back. the sad thing is, I still have so much life I want to live, but the diagnosis is severe in my right knee. It hurts when sleeping and when I excercise. I just started physiotherapy. As well, I am recently (5 months) a type 2 diabetic taking januvia. I wonder what supplements, treatments others would recommend or care to share with me. Thanks.

I had tried multiple supplements before my chiropractor recommended Flexcin. I had back and knee troubles that kept me from leading the active lifestyle that I had enjoyed for so many years. After a few weeks on the supplement the results have been significant. I cannot recommend this product enough. Their customer support is great and the results are fantastic.

I agree that many of the supplements can be very helpful, but food is a huge factor. My daughter was diagnosed with JRA affecting all of her joints. After going through the entire protocol we also had her tested (through a functional medicine) doctor and she showed gluten and dairy sensitivity. After having her on the diet and doing a very short course (5 months) of Humira we were able to get her off of all meds and she is doing very well. Gaining weight and growing. She does sometimes have small flares, but very manageable. We eat organic fruits and vegetables whenever possible, grass fed beef and organic preservative free meats, poultry and check labels on even all of the GF/DF pacaged foods to make sure there are no preservatives or chemicals

I AM A SENIOR WITH O/A IN MANY AREAS OF THE BODY. I HAVE MANAGED TO "LIVE" WITH IT THRU EXERCISE, BUT THE DEGREE OF PAIN IN THE TWO MIDDLE FINGERS OF MY RIGHT HAND HAS BECOME SO PAINFUL THAT I AM UNABLE TO SWING THE GOLF CLUB. IBUPROPHEN DID HELP FOR SOMETIME AS DID CELOBREX. INCREASING THE CELOBREX FROM ONE TO TWO TABLETS PER DAY HASN'T HELPED. MASSAGING, MANIPULATING, STRETCHING, HEAT AND COLD COMPRESSES HAVE NOT REDUCED THE PAIN. I WOULD APPRECIATE YOUR COMMENTS AND/OR SUGGESTIONS.

I use Tramadol with Tylenol and Baby Asprin.I take 3 Tramadols a day but the Tylenol and Asprin are 1-2 a day.
I also use a Vit.B6, CoQ10, Calcium with Vit.D, Fish Oils, Glucosamine/Chondroitin/MSM. I have Osteo-A in my shoulders and wrists and my index finger in my right hand, at the end joint is getting crooked and pops all the time. I have been a Nurse for 30 yrs. and a Drummer in a band for 10 yrs. No more drumming, but I still am a Nurse, but not doing things I use to. The weather changes do bother me and some mornings are difficult to get going. The great news...I don't let it stop me!

To A.B and others that seek help

I wrote here in March about coconut oil and oil pulling. Since I haven't read one comment on the thing I assume no one have tried it.
Well, people I have a great news from my RA doctor, my RA is in remission. Less inflammation and much less pain. Inflammation causes pain around the joints. Less inflammation, less pain. Also virgin/organic coconut oil is a natural product and has no side effects. Research this phenomenal thing on www.coconutresearch.org.
My RA doctor told me that she's not against coconut oil, if it works use it. Besides how do you think people were treated prior to medicines. Americans are addicted to prescription drugs. Just look at the statistics.

Good luck to all of you, hope you find your miracle, I know I have.

My daughter has JIA; she was diagnosed in 8/2010 at age 10. I spend a lot of time going to these sites to find out what works for people. My daughter is on Zyflamend (a nice cocktail of anti-inflammatory supplements and anti-oxidants), Fish Oil, Vitamin D3, Vitamin C, folic acid, a probiotic - and methotrexate. We have also changed her diet. She eats foods primarily that are anti-inflammatory in nature so we do a balancing act to prevent too much consumption of inflammatory foods. We limit nightshade foods - potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, eggplant. Anytime she eats potatoes, she has pain in her hip. It is truly crazy.

There is one thing I HIGHLY recommend to any of you out there who are in pain - GET YOUR VITAMIN D LEVEL CHECKED. My daughter was in a lot of pain last fall. I called her doctor and asked to have the Vit D checked (I read it online). Her level was so low, it was indetectible. After taking 50,000 units a day for 2 weeks and 2,000 units a day since, her levels are within range AND her pain has diminished significantly. Her rheumatologist told us studies are suggesting that pain can be tied to low Vitamin D levels. It certainly seemed to be in our case.

I also want to mention - if you are on NSAIDs, consider taking a probiotic. Many NSAIDs effect good and bad bacteria in your body. A probiotic will replenish the good bacteria. (A natural doctor recommended this). My daughter had been on 1000mg ibuprofen a day for 4 months. She is now off of those (because her pain has diminished so much) but I am keeping her on the probiotic.

Good luck and thanks to all of you who have shared your info - I am taking notes and researching further!

Hello Everyone, I am 56 years old, have been in pain since my late 20's. I have Osteo, Rheumatoid, Fibro, and Lupus, so nothing but muscle & joint pain. I now take Plaquenil, Methotrexate-6 one times a week, Percocets 10/325 x 4 a day, Folic Acid, Calcium,
Elavil, Lexapro, I was taking Fish Oil but, don't see any difference taking the Fish Oil, So does anyone know if Omega 3's would be better, does anyone take it and notice a difference??
I have taken Orenzia Infusions, Remicaide Infusions, Humira, Embrel, not counting all the pills I took.
Thanks, good luck to everyone trying to find that magic pill that could help us.

If you are considering taking supplements, it would be best for you to consult with either a naturopathic doctor or a nutritionist who is familiar with natural and synthetic products. I was diaagnosed years ago in my 40's with advanced arthritis, fibromyalgia, degenerative disc disease and spinal stenosis. I became proactive about my health, talked to my doctor and consulted a naturopathic doctor/nutritionist. Both work hand in hand with me regarding my health issues. I take supplements but am also on medication for blood pressure. Whether you are on pharmaceuticals or natural supplements, you still need to eat healthy, exercise and get adequate rest. You would never take a medication without a doctor's RX or consulting with the pharmacist. So, why would you take a supplement without consulting with a naturopathic doctor/nutritionist or a medical doctor? Just make sure your medical doctor is familiar with nutrition issues and supplements. Remember that food also interacts with your body and its functions. Learn the foods that can help with your condition. Be proactive. Take care of yourself!

Yes, supplements such as vitamin D3, fish oil, glucosamine, chontroitin and MSM along with good diet and exercise are good for you. It's NEVER ONE THING, it's a combination of things, so do not give up on some supplements because you think that they do not help you.

I have a recommendation for all of you:

START WITH OIL PULLING and COCONUT OIL, EXERCISE (WALKING IS GOOD) AND DIET CHANGE.

I want to respond to the person's who have osteoarthritis and fibromyalgia---go to ww.fmnetnews.com--order the newsletter. There are person's here that are not understanding fm.
Please do some more reseach. Fm I have had for 20 years now and I have osteo--fm does not cause inflamation of the joints. It effects the muscles with severe pain. It does not effect joints.
OA effects the joints as well as bursitis which I also have another arthritis condition.
I take 30 mg of IR Morphine and Paxil 50 mg and Ambien to sleep 10 mg. I cannot live without these medications.
I am chronic pain and have had many problems in my area of PA to get help with pain....
I know from a specialist I went to in Franklin NC how NSAIDS are worse for my condition than anything else on the market because they have nothing to do to help FM.
FM is so complicated with all the symptoms a person has. I say treat each one separately.
I also treat IBS occasionally with Belledonne or (Donatol) same medicines.
I get extremely bad migranes from my spine. I do not know why. Hot burning painful. Only a strong marcotic with Visteril helps those.
That is why fm is so difficult. A person has to really know what ache is where and what is happening to get the right medication.
Doctor's I have dealt with here in Pa will not prescribe fetynal which is what the specialist prescribe in NC for me and I was able to manage my flare-ups better with the sucker's which he had no problem giving me.
He also knew I was very knowledgeable with the fm issue too and the patient doctor trust issue then is good.
Doctor's here in PA for whatever reason will not help me this way. So state to state I have to say is very different in what meds you can find but being exact in knowledge will take you a shorter distance in the doctor/patient relationship. I have found a lot of so called "quakes" here more than helping knowledgeable physcians too.
I wish everyone a pain less year....!

I have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia and before my diagnosis, was taking SAME and 5HTP supplements and found they were helping. I would not say that I was pain free, but was able to function reasonably well. Through the diagnostics my neurologist found "white spots" on my brain, and asked me to stop taking the supplements as he thought there was a good possibility that SAME and 5HTP could alter brain cells. I have since tried at least 5 RX medications, most of which I was unable o tolerate, an none of which offer the relief I was getting from SAME and 5HTP. I would definitely recommend these to fibro or arthritis sufferers with a doctor to monitor you.

I have arthritis in my neck from a accident
15 years ago. The glucosomine and chonodroitin pills are too rough on my stomach. I have found joint juice to give me immediate results by drinking the pre mixed juice. No one on this site seems to know about a natural substance that is everywhere in your bodies but is reoriduced in decreasing amounts as we get older. It is named Hyaluronic Acid (sometimes referred to as H.A.). This is what I take in addition to Glucosamine, Chondroitin and MSM to repair joints (not just a painkiller). This natural compound is already in your knees, elbows, wrists. hips, etc.and acts with other compounds as a lubricant and cushion in your joints. It is administered as a fluid injection directly into the joint in serious cases but can also be taken (very important) as an oral lozenge in the form of high molecular weight H.A. I suggest don't bother with tablets containg low molecular weight HA.

My orthopedic doctors recommend knee replacements 5 years ago, saying "you will know when your ready." Well, I was ready at least 2 yrs ago but resisting and in pain most all the time. Water aerobics daily helps a lot. Just took a trial bottle of Instaflex and I think it helped but it isn't going to keep the knees from needing to be replaced. Does anyone have any input or experience with Instaflex? It has a lot of good ingrediends, Turmeic, ginger, cayenne, etc. I think it helps; it's pricey, $75/mth. Would like to hear from someone who has tried it; it could be worth the $ rather than a drug.

Sept/Oct 2009 Arthritis Today article titled Nourished by Nature listed several supplements. I marked the ones that sounded beneficial to my conditions then went shopping. I purchased "Devils Claw" and "Evening Primrose". The Evening Primrose takes a few months before starting to work according to the article. The Devils Claw is a miracle worker. The day I started it, a low front was due in by that afternoon. I was pain free for 3 or 4 months, and still 8 months later the flares are minor and last a few hours rather than days.

I was diagnosed with RA for 2 years. My doctor recommended me to take glucosamine for at least 2 months. After 2 months I stopped taking glucosamine instead I maintained taking DoloNeurobion. But I found out that until this time the pain of my knees is still there especially when I had so many activities that requires standing or walking. Does it mean that doloneurobion is not effective with my case? Would your help me recommend what food supplement is best for me? By the way I am 42 years old and a teacher by profession.

Some great comments here about supplements. Along with calcium, antioxidants are extremely helpful in reducing inflammation. There is a berry called Maqui, which has the highest ORAC levels of any fruit on the market. I am with Maqui Superberry, and we have received dozens of reports that people's arthritis pain has been reduced significantly since they started with the berry.

My mother's hands were somewhat deformed with the ends of her fingers almost turned 90 degrees. She worked as a typist. I tried to get my mother to quit drinking tea and coffee and even spoke to her nursing home about this. But neither my mother or the nursing home personnel responded in a reasonable way about this. She died at age 93 from digestive tract problems. My uncle, my mother's brother, is now age 90 and has some bumps on his finger joints, but not as severe as my mother's deformity. I spoke to him about eliminating caffeine from his diet, but he is psychologically and socially addicted, it appears to me. I also spoke to him about the copper and zinc supplements, but he choses not to use them. My own hands are completely un-deformed, although I sometimes experience joint pain at the base of the thumb. On those occasions I take my usual copper (2 mg) and zinc (30 mg) combination for a few days and the pain leaves me and I enjoy complete flexibility and range of motion. These supplements are available from "Twin-Lab".

I have also substantially reduced my calcium intake in my diet from food sources because of the accumulation of bone spurs in my neck (confirmed by x-ray) and in my feet in the metatarsal joint causing a thick callous to form on the sole of my feet. I found this approach to be very helpful. I now also take glucosamine sulfate and chondroitin because my knee cartilege was reduced by running on a treadmill at the gym. It seems that some cartilege has been restored and I seldom feel knee pain although I have given up running for exercise and only run to avoid homicidal drivers when crossing streets.

In my coping with arthritis, I noticed that the onset of this disease at age 35 closely followed an increase in caffeine use in my beverages. Since caffeine is not in any way a vital or necessary substance in the human diet but can be psychologically and socially addictive, I decided first to eliminate all caffeine from my diet. This sometimes requires becoming a bit of a fanatic because every restaurant or social gathering will assume that you want coffee or tea even if you didn't ask for it. However, the rewards are fantastic. I estimate my reduction in arthritis pain at 90% to 95%. Then a few years later my curiousity was peaked by seeing someone wearing a copper bracelet for arthritis. I tried this for a while, but found it annoying to wear. Then I found that copper supplements were available in capsule form. Some research on the internet turned up the details that copper supplements need to be balanced with zinc supplements and in a very specific ratio of 15 parts zinc to 1 part copper by weight. And I also fond out that ingesting more than 10 mg of copper can become toxic. The copper supplements from a very popular supplement manufacturer were produced in 2 mg doses and zinc capsules were also available from the same source in 30 mg doses. This nicely fit the requirements of keeping the daily dose of copper well below 10 mg and having a 15-to-1 dose ratio between zinc and copper. Someone must have worked this all out before at that supplement manufacturer. :0)

I have had RA for 9 years. I have tried every diet change and supplement recommended and suggested by medical practitioners to Indian shamans over that time and absolutely nothing has worked.

The only thing that keeps RA at bay for me is a weekly 50 mg injection of Enbrel. And even that hasn't stopped its progression completely.

Good luck all.

This is in response to Sandy Marsch 's question regarding why taking calcium intensified the joint pain.

Our body works in mysterious ways. Calcium that is not properly absorbed in the body, could be deposited in the joints, and restricting flow of blood and lymph thus intensifying the pain. The problem could be due to poor quality calcium supplements, or lack of proper probiotics in the colon. The problem could happen any time.

If you need more specific info. Email me at:

healthyagain@yahoo.com

I could send you some additional resources on this.

This is in response to Vic's question regarding Pycnogenol and reduction of arthritis pain.

Pycnogenol is a trademark of a french maritime pine bark extract. Pycnogenol is mainly OPC, the strongest antioxidant know to men. Pycnogenol is one of the most researched nutraceuticals (nutritional supplements that has therapeutical effects) there is. Yes, absolutely Pycnogenol is a great for reducing inflammation and reducing pain.

How this works is that, Pycnogenol was chosen due to a history of studies of the extract to alleviate inflammation by inhibiting COX-1, COX-2 and the pro-inflammatory "master-switch" nuclear factor-kappa B, NF-kB"said lead researcher Dr. Ronald Watson from the University of Arizona.

Pycnogenol offers a safe nutritional approach to significantly reduce pain and improve physical function of arthritic joints. It controls inflammation and thus ideally complements existing strategies that comprise delivery of building blocks for replacement of degenerated cartilage.

I will be doing a webnar that helps people to give the body what it needs to naturally heal itself. I will go over some of the beneficial nutraceuticals with scientific research behind it. We will go through how to naturally reduce inflammation and also eliminate the sources of inflammation. How liver function is so closely related to arthritis. At the end of the seminar, I hope you will have a good grasp of what to do.

if you are interested, please email me at the following address, I will email you the details of dates of the webinar.

I've been taking glucosomine 1500 mg and chondroitin 12 00 for years. An orthopedist recommended it but said it must be in that dosage to be effective. Recently I started taking it in liquid form because it assimilates quicker and more effectively. There are two brands but Elations is the lesast expensive. I find it helps a lot. The days I forget to drink or it drink it late in the day I have more pain.

Elations + exersise + stretching (I recomment yoga)= less knee and back pain for me.

I saw a blurb in the newest MORE magazine about 2 small studies using pycnoginal to help with pain and reduce inflammation in the knee joints for arthritis. I am not able to do much exercise & can feel myself getting stiffer and more painful each week. This is not fun! v

I take zyflamed. it has ingredients that are good for inflammation so i dont have to take on their own. i also take or have taken, boswellia, bronelain (found in pineapples so we can get that if we eat pineapple also)curcumin(in capsules), tumeric (in capsules and I also season food with it), fish oil, flax seed oil, eat more salmon, lots of fruits and vegetables, Cherries are out now, and areI like being able to incorpore anti inflammatories in my diet('healing foods"), also. My doc said anything that is anti inflammatory to keep it down is great. take plaquenil and so far have not had to go on anything stronger (I am 58 and was diagnosed a year and a half ago-hands, thumbs, wrists, but am SO much better than when it started). He is happy with how I am doing. And I exercise alot alot more, treadmill, eliptical, weights, also to keep it down and get and stay stronger. Air, some sun, outdoors seem to help me alot also. I guess feeling of well being. We spend too much time in car here in L. A. so I have to make an effort to get out without car and just be walking or in my garden or whatever. Also I find I have to stay away from stressful situations, stay calm and happy.
I have had relief with accupuncture, and pro lo therapy shots into joints. Some physical therapy from time to time also. And if I get fatigued, I find if I exercise I snap out of it. so I DRAG my tired body to the gym instead of sleeping too much during the day because then I cant sleep at night..
Good luck.

I was recently told by my GI doctor I needed to take calcium since I had been on Protonix for a long time. I started the chewable calcium and in days my leg pain increased and I was hardly able to walk because of knee pain, and other. Why would calcium cause such severe worsening leg pain? Thanks,
