The Facts About Supplements

Thinking about supplementing your diet? Understand the definitions of vitamins and supplements.

Q: What are dietary supplements?

Dietary supplements, including plant-and animal-derived products, are not classified as or considered to be drugs, but that doesn’t mean they can’t act like them. To be classified as a dietary supplement, a product must be taken by mouth and contain a “dietary ingredient” – that is, a substance intended to be taken in addition to, not instead of, healthy foods. Overall, dietary supplements include vitamins, minerals, botanicals, amino acids and any part of those substances, such as extracts or concentrates.

Q: Why do I need to talk to my doctor about the supplements I take or want to take?

Plants produce chemicals just as people and animals do. Those chemicals, while from a source found in nature, can have effects on the body ranging from mild to potent, just like chemicals produced in a laboratory. Because supplements are, in fact, chemicals, they have the potential to interact with chemicals in manmade medications. That’s why you need to get the go-ahead from your doctor about supplements – not just once but each and every time you consider trying one.

Q: How are dietary supplements different from medication?

When you go to the pharmacy to pick up a prescription, you have three layers of protection between you and the product. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has reviewed and approved it, your doctor has considered your history and prescribed it, and your pharmacist alerts you to possible interactions with other medications you’re taking. Even with an over-the-counter medication, there’s the FDA layer of protection, and your pharmacist is accessible to answer questions. But with a dietary supplement, there are no protective layers between your hand and the product on the shelf.

I was diagnosed with RA for 2 years. My doctor recommended me to take glucosamine for at least 2 months. After 2 months I stopped taking glucosamine instead I maintained taking DoloNeurobion. But I found out that until this time the pain of my knees is still there especially when I had so many activities that requires standing or walking. Does it mean that doloneurobion is not effective with my case? Would your help me recommend what food supplement is best for me? By the way I am 42 years old and a teacher by profession.

Some great comments here about supplements. Along with calcium, antioxidants are extremely helpful in reducing inflammation. There is a berry called Maqui, which has the highest ORAC levels of any fruit on the market. I am with Maqui Superberry, and we have received dozens of reports that people's arthritis pain has been reduced significantly since they started with the berry.

My mother's hands were somewhat deformed with the ends of her fingers almost turned 90 degrees. She worked as a typist. I tried to get my mother to quit drinking tea and coffee and even spoke to her nursing home about this. But neither my mother or the nursing home personnel responded in a reasonable way about this. She died at age 93 from digestive tract problems. My uncle, my mother's brother, is now age 90 and has some bumps on his finger joints, but not as severe as my mother's deformity. I spoke to him about eliminating caffeine from his diet, but he is psychologically and socially addicted, it appears to me. I also spoke to him about the copper and zinc supplements, but he choses not to use them. My own hands are completely un-deformed, although I sometimes experience joint pain at the base of the thumb. On those occasions I take my usual copper (2 mg) and zinc (30 mg) combination for a few days and the pain leaves me and I enjoy complete flexibility and range of motion. These supplements are available from "Twin-Lab".

I have also substantially reduced my calcium intake in my diet from food sources because of the accumulation of bone spurs in my neck (confirmed by x-ray) and in my feet in the metatarsal joint causing a thick callous to form on the sole of my feet. I found this approach to be very helpful. I now also take glucosamine sulfate and chondroitin because my knee cartilege was reduced by running on a treadmill at the gym. It seems that some cartilege has been restored and I seldom feel knee pain although I have given up running for exercise and only run to avoid homicidal drivers when crossing streets.

In my coping with arthritis, I noticed that the onset of this disease at age 35 closely followed an increase in caffeine use in my beverages. Since caffeine is not in any way a vital or necessary substance in the human diet but can be psychologically and socially addictive, I decided first to eliminate all caffeine from my diet. This sometimes requires becoming a bit of a fanatic because every restaurant or social gathering will assume that you want coffee or tea even if you didn't ask for it. However, the rewards are fantastic. I estimate my reduction in arthritis pain at 90% to 95%. Then a few years later my curiousity was peaked by seeing someone wearing a copper bracelet for arthritis. I tried this for a while, but found it annoying to wear. Then I found that copper supplements were available in capsule form. Some research on the internet turned up the details that copper supplements need to be balanced with zinc supplements and in a very specific ratio of 15 parts zinc to 1 part copper by weight. And I also fond out that ingesting more than 10 mg of copper can become toxic. The copper supplements from a very popular supplement manufacturer were produced in 2 mg doses and zinc capsules were also available from the same source in 30 mg doses. This nicely fit the requirements of keeping the daily dose of copper well below 10 mg and having a 15-to-1 dose ratio between zinc and copper. Someone must have worked this all out before at that supplement manufacturer. :0)

Age 35 & just diagnosed with RA. Was given prescription meds-meloxicam and Hydroxychloroqunie (plaquenil). Found on online research an article for Zymosine. I prefer something natural with no to little side effects, not like what is listed on my prescriptions. Could u send me information about Zymosine and/or other naturals that would work in the place of any prescriptions.
Thank You

I have had RA for 9 years. I have tried every diet change and supplement recommended and suggested by medical practitioners to Indian shamans over that time and absolutely nothing has worked.

The only thing that keeps RA at bay for me is a weekly 50 mg injection of Enbrel. And even that hasn't stopped its progression completely.

Good luck all.

This is in response to Sandy Marsch 's question regarding why taking calcium intensified the joint pain.

Our body works in mysterious ways. Calcium that is not properly absorbed in the body, could be deposited in the joints, and restricting flow of blood and lymph thus intensifying the pain. The problem could be due to poor quality calcium supplements, or lack of proper probiotics in the colon. The problem could happen any time.

If you need more specific info. Email me at:

healthyagain@yahoo.com

I could send you some additional resources on this.

This is in response to Vic's question regarding Pycnogenol and reduction of arthritis pain.

Pycnogenol is a trademark of a french maritime pine bark extract. Pycnogenol is mainly OPC, the strongest antioxidant know to men. Pycnogenol is one of the most researched nutraceuticals (nutritional supplements that has therapeutical effects) there is. Yes, absolutely Pycnogenol is a great for reducing inflammation and reducing pain.

How this works is that, Pycnogenol was chosen due to a history of studies of the extract to alleviate inflammation by inhibiting COX-1, COX-2 and the pro-inflammatory "master-switch" nuclear factor-kappa B, NF-kB"said lead researcher Dr. Ronald Watson from the University of Arizona.

Pycnogenol offers a safe nutritional approach to significantly reduce pain and improve physical function of arthritic joints. It controls inflammation and thus ideally complements existing strategies that comprise delivery of building blocks for replacement of degenerated cartilage.

I will be doing a webnar that helps people to give the body what it needs to naturally heal itself. I will go over some of the beneficial nutraceuticals with scientific research behind it. We will go through how to naturally reduce inflammation and also eliminate the sources of inflammation. How liver function is so closely related to arthritis. At the end of the seminar, I hope you will have a good grasp of what to do.

if you are interested, please email me at the following address, I will email you the details of dates of the webinar.

This is in reply to "Mae" (May 5, 2009). Mae mentioned about taking calcium and her leg pain increasing. Has anyone responded to this as to why the pain intensified? I take a daily supplement of calcium as I also have OA as well as RA. I am also taking Actonel. I am curious as to why calcium would have this effect.
Thank you.

I've been taking glucosomine 1500 mg and chondroitin 12 00 for years. An orthopedist recommended it but said it must be in that dosage to be effective. Recently I started taking it in liquid form because it assimilates quicker and more effectively. There are two brands but Elations is the lesast expensive. I find it helps a lot. The days I forget to drink or it drink it late in the day I have more pain.

Elations + exersise + stretching (I recomment yoga)= less knee and back pain for me.

I take zyflamed. it has ingredients that are good for inflammation so i dont have to take on their own. i also take or have taken, boswellia, bronelain (found in pineapples so we can get that if we eat pineapple also)curcumin(in capsules), tumeric (in capsules and I also season food with it), fish oil, flax seed oil, eat more salmon, lots of fruits and vegetables, Cherries are out now, and areI like being able to incorpore anti inflammatories in my diet('healing foods"), also. My doc said anything that is anti inflammatory to keep it down is great. take plaquenil and so far have not had to go on anything stronger (I am 58 and was diagnosed a year and a half ago-hands, thumbs, wrists, but am SO much better than when it started). He is happy with how I am doing. And I exercise alot alot more, treadmill, eliptical, weights, also to keep it down and get and stay stronger. Air, some sun, outdoors seem to help me alot also. I guess feeling of well being. We spend too much time in car here in L. A. so I have to make an effort to get out without car and just be walking or in my garden or whatever. Also I find I have to stay away from stressful situations, stay calm and happy.
I have had relief with accupuncture, and pro lo therapy shots into joints. Some physical therapy from time to time also. And if I get fatigued, I find if I exercise I snap out of it. so I DRAG my tired body to the gym instead of sleeping too much during the day because then I cant sleep at night..
Good luck.

I was recently told by my GI doctor I needed to take calcium since I had been on Protonix for a long time. I started the chewable calcium and in days my leg pain increased and I was hardly able to walk because of knee pain, and other. Why would calcium cause such severe worsening leg pain? Thanks,
