Study Examines Smoking and Sleep Problems

If you are smoker and are experiencing sleep problems or insomnia, smoking may be to blame, according to a new study in the journal CHEST. The study shows that even healthy smokers are four times as likely as nonsmokers to report feeling unrested after a night’s sleep. Smoking also results in spending less time in deep sleep and more time in light sleep, with the greatest differences in sleep patterns seen in the early stages of sleep. Researchers speculate that the stimulating effects of nicotine could cause people to experience nicotine withdrawal each night, which may contribute to disturbances in sleep.

While numerous studies have looked at disordered sleep patterns in medical conditions, including fibromyalgia and obstructive sleep apnea, this study is the first to show how sleep problems can result from cigarette smoking.

“The long-term effects of smoking on respiratory and cardiovascular health are well-known,” said Alvin V. Thomas, Jr., MD, president of the American College of Chest Physicians. “However, this study is significant because it suggests that smokers may also be deprived of the much-needed restorative effects of sleep. This study provides yet one more reason to stop smoking or to never start.”

WOW I AM SO GLAD I GOT HERE JUST TO HEAR THE POSSIBILITY THAT SMOKEING CAUSES ANY SIDE EFFECT-I HAVE A BIG PROBLEM WITH SLEEPING-I BLAME IT ON SUBOXON WHICH KEEPS ME WIRED FEELING AS SIDE EFFECT-I LIKE THE ENERGY IN THE DAY BUT NO GOOD SLEEP. ALSO WHEN I DO GET UP EVERY 20 MINS OR SLEEP FOR HOUR AND 20 I THEN GET UP AND GO OUT SIDE AND HAVE A SMOKE-THATS IT-TONIGHT AND TOMORROW NIGHT I WILL HAVE NONE-TRY TO HAVE NONE AND SEEE WHAT HAPPENS WITH ME-I FINNALLY SEE DOC TOMORROW ABOUT SLEEP STUDY I DID WEEKS AGO-I NEED SOMETHING TO KNOCK ME OUT-WAS TAKEING 6 TRANSADONE WITH ANOTHER LIGHT SLEEPER-NO HEL;P-I WILL LEAVE A RESULT OF WHAT HAPPENS AS I WEAN DOWN FROM SMOMING AT NIGHT.I HAVE NO CHOICE SINCE I REALLY NEED THE SLAAP- THANKS ANY AN DALL. It's true that smoking and irregularities in the sleep patterns go hand in hand. My teenage son (15) is a smoker and therefore he finds it very hard to fall asleep naturally at night which makes him quite drowsy and sleepy in the morning. He became nocturnal. It's not a lifestyle anyone wants to have but my son got into a very bad company and with the peer pressure being so high, he fell into the trap of becoming quite addicted and won't change his lifestyle. His exams are coming up soon and he won't wake up on time for school. He's always late. He claims he is too tired to get up. I wish the government would ban smoking forever and would make smoking history.

I was just reading the article with interest. I thought that a possible 'loop hole' in the study was that; maybe those who smoke began smoking because of having more sensitivity, nervousness etc. therefore they would already have been good candidates for insomnia. As smoking often seems to begin as a 'social crutch' this would suggest a less placid interior domain to begin with.
