Do-It-Yourself Arthritis Pain Relief

Real (good) ways to relieve the real pain of fibromyalgia

By Donna Rae Siegfried

A new day is dawning for those with fibromyalgia who are seeking effective methods of chronic pain management and arthritis pain relief. It wasn’t so long ago when nothing and no one seemed to help the millions of people with fibromyalgia. Doctors didn’t understand the puzzling condition, and as a result, patients often were left feeling – if not told outright – that the pain was all in their heads.

But that was then, says Leslie J. Crofford, MD, chief of rheumatology and women’s health at the University of Kentucky Hospital in Lexington. “Today,” she says, “patients will get a diagnosis, information and appropriate treatment.”

New research has shown that people with fibromyalgia can take arthritis pain relief into their own hands, too. Doctors’ prescriptions for medications target the hypersensitivity triggered by the errant transport of pain messages throughout the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) or help improve sleep quality. In addition, fibromyalgia patients benefit from learning about their condition from other patients, exercising and trying acupuncture or massage.

The exercise Rx

Participating in a strength-training program not only increased upper- and lower-body strength by 63 percent and 49 percent, respectively, it also decreased pain by 39 percent, according to researchers at Florida State University in Tallahassee. The women in the study experienced these benefits after training just two days a week for 16 weeks.

“The goal is to start low and go slow, in terms of increasing physical activity,” says Dr. Crofford. “We tell people to start at their capacity – no matter how brief that is – and increase to a five-minute warm up; 30 minutes of aerobic activity, such as walking; a five-minute cooldown; and then a stretch. At that point, you’re ready to begin strength training.”

In addition to arthritis pain relief, exercise has many benefits for people with fibromyalgia. It may reduce fatigue, says Dr. Crofford, and it may boost confidence. “People believe they can do other things if they can stick with an exercise program,” she says.

And they can. In a study funded, in part, by the Arthritis Foundation, an exercise program that includes walking, strength training and stretching improved physical function and curtailed symptoms in women with fibromyalgia.

I don't mean to be rude but in your response to:
For All of You who are complaining about the drugs your doctor prescribe for you.

You are nothing but a walking drug store--too much drugs and still no cure or ease.

Stop sticking your head in the sand and realise you have to get back to basics:

1 Eating right- veggies, fruits, salads
2.Exercise- whether sitting or standing or lying down
3.Meditation-
4. Religion-Catholic-say your rosary twice a day
Bhudist- chanting often
other denominations- pray
5.spouse, boyfriend, girlfriend,son, daughter-let them give you a good rub-down
6. Always thank God for small mercies, usually those are the most important.
7.Listen to music- Mosart, Rock, Jazz -whatever turns you on.
People, I leave you all in Peace.
Thank You.

My dear you must not suffer the way I have for over 15 years. I also have tried all of the natural approaches but when you reach 59 and have FM, Lupus, Severe Osteoporosis, OA, and nerve damage there has to be more than what you insist works!
Please someone that has advice pls help! I also live in Florida, no medical insurance (due to pre-existing conditions) and now new law requires a monthly visit just to refill clonazepam for nerve dameage. Only on Clonazepam, Flexeril and OTC meds! Thank you!

I just returned from my 1 yr. check up w/ my Ortho. surgeon. He was surprised to hear that I am walking 3 miles on the indoor track @ my Y. My knee was a full replacement & my knee cap was not removed. I was informed that I am one of the 5% who have chronic pain after the surgery. He also said that I am the only person he knows of that can successfully walk so far. I am his "miracle patient".

What has motivates me is that I have set a goal & worked towards it. While walking, I do not feel any pain in my knee; afterwards is a different matter. One of the employees said that I am one of the most dedicated members. A feeling of accomplishment is a great pain med!

I woke up one morning (after being a weight/body builder)and my head said, "let's get going" but my body said, "NO"!!! After all the tests, doctors & drugs I lost a $65,000 a year job w/insurance. It's taken lots of life from me. I just recently got married, it lasted 2 years, he just walked out one Saturday saying he couldn't take "it" anymore. I am currently 60 years old with Cronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fibromyaliga, Osteoarthritis, two messed up discs and degenerative back disease. I describe my life as I'm just a walking boil. I describe to my friends & family it's like a tooth ache all over my body. I've missed doing things with my two grandaughters, my daughter has just thought it was in my head till my ex-husband had a talk with her. My belief in God and my church has been my biggest help, but an understanding doctor, who LISTENED to me, put me on a round of drugs that would scare most people. I take Celebrex, Xanex, baby asprin and Crestor (sometimes 1/4th of a Soma (if the pain is real bad)at night. In the morning to get going I take one each of Loratab, Lyrica, HCTZ (for blood pressure), Lexapro (mild for depression) and Phentermine (diet pill). The best thing besides my morning & night coctails is an electric heated mattress pad my sister in Arizona got me a couple of years ago. I also sleep with a special water pillow in a water bed that you can put regular sheets on. There is a thick mattress between the water and me, then I put my mattress heater on top of that. Right now it's 20 degrees and I am hurting but I've been on the computer a long time today in one position. If I know a busy-day, is coming up, I'll rest up for a day or two doing nothing because if I don't it will take me one or two days in bed hurting to get over my "busy-day". Massage (if you can afford it) is really good. My mother had both knees replaced and my sister just had both her's done. I've had one knee operated on and know that some day I will have to replace both. However, they now have different knee sizes for replacements. Small, Med. & Large for women and I am hearing of a type of knee oper. that replaces the cartilege with some type of new stuff that grows back like new cartilege. The longer I wait, hopefully the more advances they will make for people with cronic joint problems, Fybro. & CFS. There are many drug companies (for the drugs I mentioned above) that will help if you contact them. In the last year I got on disability and now, Praise God, I have Medicare, Medicaid and Prescription help, but it's still expensive. I am getting ready to try acupuncture as I have heard it's really a lot of help. But, forget the "exercise". Just keep moving and don't find youselve slumping. Sit up as straight as you can and stand up slowly. Take your time moving. Watch out for tooth loss or decay and have your liver checked once or twice a year if you take any medications. Good luck to all of you and get as much rest as you can. Sometimes I even take a half of an Ambien. Most doctors wouldn't ever give all those drugs at the same time and I also have to take a drug test everytime I go to the doctor, but it's worth it. May God give all those of us who suffer with these malidys, a good nights sleep tonight. God bless you all & stay strong. One last note, learn and read any and everything you can get your hands on about these terrible problems. You CAN get better with knowledge!

Friends
check out DMSO and MSM elsewhere on these discussion boards. They help reduce pain and inflammation. For sleepless nights, I find melatonin is wonderful, it's not addictive nor is it a drug, it's actually healthy and cheaply available over the counter without a script.
Good luck

To Annie and Micah: I thought I had just pulled something on my left side and have been "nursing" it for months. I had no idea it could be part of my RA and/or fibromyalgiz. I also have an inoperable herniated disc at T11-12. But now, since you both have posted, I know what I am dealing with. It's not going to heal, is it? Just another thing to deal with. I have been diagnosed with RA and fibro for almost 6 years now. Plaquenil is the drug that has helped me the most. Of course, among the 23 pills a day that I take, I'm sure the Skelaxin, Relafen, Cymbalta, Lyrica, and Oxycodone (among others) have some pain relief qualities, too. Thank goodness I have a wonderful husband who understands and cares when I am in an awful flare. Sometimes just being able to sleep for days is the best for me.

I already consulted my doctor on this pains in my right arm & she says it's arthritis thing. I took about a month medication from her prescriptions yet the pain is still there & even worse by now. Some says it's good to do some exercises to move the joints but doctor says not till the pain is there. Nevertheless, i tried to do some exercises thinking it might help but it did not so i stopped. What will i do? please give me advice on this matter.

I also have rib pain on my left side. I wonder if any doctor has noticed this with his patients with fibro. It has been getting better over the last 2 years, I have had it for about 10 years. I have RA and fibro. Have been on biologics for the ast 20 years. I was one of the 1st on Enbrel when it was experimental. But in the last 2 years have been getting infections so bad I had to go off of them. I am on predisone, advil and vicodin now. Hate all these medicines.
I friend of mine has gone on cannibis tea with the butter at night. I really think I will try it. Anything is better than what I am doing now.
People just don't get the pain, sometimes i could scream.
Thanks for listening.

had fibromyalgia all my life and thought I was normal. Always in some sort of pain. Some days are excruciating, the pain, the inflamation, the muscles, the ligaments, the tendoms, etc.I take over the counter arthritus tylenol, advil and doctor pres. of flexeril every 4 hrs. Fibromyalgia goes in and out of remission. Each time it is 6 months.Stress is our worst enemy and good sleep every night is the cure. The problem is getting a good nights sleep every night and dodging stress or unnecessary stress. I have learned to live and cope with it the best I can and have helped others to.The problem is that no one will tell you that the pain takes it's toll on the mind too! People are afraid to talk about it. they are afraid people will think we are gone crazy or a nut job. There is a lot about Fibro. that no one will talk about. I am 55 soon to be 56 years old and lived with it all of my life. I just got use to living with it. It hasd become my way of life.It would kill me to not be in some sort of pain.I do take antidepressants daily. At night Tylenol p.m. helps and nerve pills to,xanax.Everything affects us, not just the weather. We get extremely sensitive to everything. Our pain like taking a shot gets hightened to where we can!t hardly stand it. We get so sensitive.

To Annie: You are definitely not alone with the rib pain you are suffering from. I too have a lot of rib pain on my left side almost constantly. My mother and I both have Fibro, and she has told me about her rib pain for years. This pain makes it difficult for her to drive, and it is painful for me to breathe and lay down. I actually told a doctor that I thought I had an injury to my ribs. I have read about another person with Fibro that suffers from similar pain as well. I think this pain, unfortunately, is yet another problem associated with this horrible condition we suffer with. I hope this helps a little.

I have been reading all these e-mails and you all have my sympathy. I was diagnosed with fms back in 2000. I am on disability and see a pain specialist every month. I also have arthritis in my spine, with compression fractures, and bulgong discs.. The most severe pain is in my ribs on the left side. I am getting spinal epidurals wich sometimes help but very expensive. I also have facet arthritis and my doctor tellls me this is causing my pain and another epidural is scheduled. I am taking morphine, percocet, neurontin elavil and nothing is helping this rib pain. Does anyone have this problem? I can deal with the fibromyalgia, cfs, migrains, but this pain limits me to sitting on the couch every day, watching my life pass by me. I am wearing two rib binders and ice packs. I am very curious to no if anyone else have this problem and any suggestions?? Thank you. Sincerely, Annie

Hi everyone - I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia about 14 years ago and really until recently I haven't needed to take the pain medications (about 5 years now). The last few years have been bad enough I've had to cut my hours back to about 30 a week and I run my TENS unit 8-10 hours some days (not all the time though). My Chiropractor is wonderful and only charges me $32 a month and he makes it so I can walk comfortably enough for about 7 days before I need another adjustment (he put me on the TENS unit). On really bad days, usually at work, I have to use a really hot heating pad with the TENS (it's a electrical shock unit that disrupts the pain signals). I'm without insurance and have been for several months now and don't think I'd be walking without these methods.

I agree that positive thinking, prayer and a supportive friend/family are so important. For those that don't believe in Fibromyalgia (or whatever you have) - come back with "You must not think Cancer is real either hmmm?" (you can change that to RA, OA, MS, etc) That shuts them up fast!

I have ankylosing spondylitis and osteoarthritis. I have pain constantly all over my body unless I take something. My neurosurgeon (had lumbar surgery so that my lumbar region is all metal)gave me a muscle relaxer so that sleep is possible at night. I take a Vicodin first thing in the morning to get started. I do exercises in a rehab pool twice a week or take a very hot shower followed by stretching. Then I can usually face the day but I don't stop moving or the pain will return.

Attitude is so important. I try to hang with happy people, and look at others around me who have worse things to deal with. Hope this helps someone.XV

I have arthritis all over my body. The worst area is in the center of my chest. doctors have said that there are joints where the ribs meet the breast bone. I can't sleep anymore because when I lay down the pressure on my ribcage drives me nuts! I can't find a doctor that will touch that area. I'm not sure what to do! Wish I could find some answers. Just recently it even hurts when I take in a big breath of air. I guess there are worst diseases out there.

For those of you that do not have insurance there is still hope. Check with your state to see if they have a program to get meds you need for free. You can even search perscription drug help. I had no insurnace and didn't qualify for medicaid. I did this and was able to stay on some of the meds I needed like cymbalta for my firbomyalgia. You get a three months supply. Making family understand what you are going through when you have fibromyaliga is a very hard thing. All I can say is keep talking to them. Not just about the pain you are in but say things like it really bothers me that I can do this....... anymore.

I have used micro current for pain relief for arthritis in my hands and TMJ joint pain in my jaw. It seems to reduce inflammation giving me immediate and long term benefits.
I also have a torn meniscus, I didn't want to have surgery so I started using micro current on my knee and I haven't had any pain now for over 6 years.

I have suffered with fibromyalgia for over ten years and have osteo in my hands and right foot (broke it in 2001). I am allergic to aspirin and cannot take anti-inflammatories and most pain pills. I live on Tylenol Arthritis formula just once a day as I'm afraid to take it more in case of an allergy developing. I've just started on Savella as I developed an allergy to Neurontin. All of my allergies show themselves with severe itching. Also allergic to penicillin and soy. I would give just about anything for one pain free day.

I have arthritis, and have chronic sciatic nerve problems, among other things. I find that what you eat will help in dealing with the pain. That is not to say that eating wisely will be an immediate pain reliever such as what a prescription will do. However, the inflammation the main culprit in promoting the pain. Eating such things as salmon, fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains(if possible) and little to no alcohol, candy, and other foods that are preserved with chemical we cannot even spell will help. I have done some research and also, believe it or not, salt will interfere with the inflammation as well. Please do not take the attitude that people just want to make your life miserable by not allowing you to eat the things you love. The idea is to eat as close to fresh foods as possible. Foods that are not preserved with chemicals. It is not my intention, nor anyone elses to make you miserable. It is quite the contrary. You may also like to do some research on Pro Biotics, omega 3,6, and 9 (in a good reputable fish and flaxseed oil supplement. You may, also, want to research RENEW LIFE SUPPLEMENTS> No I am not from any company promoting. I am 60 years old and have been trying to keep my bone and joint problems at bay. I hope this can help. I know that your diet will effect your bone and joint disorders.

I feel for all these folks listing here in dealing with their chronic pain. I have early onset osteo, diagnosed seven years ago. I have used a variety of meds for many years. They help, but never truly alieviate the pain. As far as over the counter meds, Ive tried many with varied results. Have had the most relief with the use of Cobroxin (gel or oral spray), Elmore oil (order online) Ive also had success in limiting some of the pain with these products an also the use of specific homopathic remedies. See your health food store specialist for this, and they can recomend specific ones for your condition/symptoms. Ive found you cant alieviate It all, but you can ease the worst of days and make 'good ones' almost like normal. That in Itself is such a blessing.
Keep looking for alternatives. Fight to feel better an never give up !! Thats my advice.

I have haad Arthritis in both of my feet for over 8 years. I have seen 6 Doctors had surgery twice that did not help. I went to see a pain doctor all he did was put me on Oxycodone that does not help much. Sometimes I can't sleep I have so much pain. I cannot do anything with the pain I have. Do you know of a Doctor I can see that will accept Badger Care I live in Wisconsin so the Doctor would have to live there also. Or do you know of something that will take away the pain. Something I can buy off the shelf.

Waiting for some help

I was "diagnosed" with arthiritis about five years ago, and i took the doctors almost ten to figure that out. I only have arthiritis in my knees and i'm 18 years of age. I've been to a lot of doctors, gotten a lot of pills, and even went to physical therapy. None of that worked and exercise only makes it hurt worse. Now in college i have to walk up six flights of stairs just to get to two of my classes and my knees hurt so bad that they feel like their going to collapse on me. So my question is, How can i get pain relief without taking pills, going to a doctor, or exercising?

Have severe joint pain in fingers and knees, I have had this for years...Hap a spur in my foot as well, and sever pain my feet. so what to do??? I have done 12 years of research and finally found relief! First of all I found out that I was allergic to sulfites - so eliminated ALL products with thosein it (life is much better for that)then I researched arthritis and calcium - everyone is all about getting enough calcium... well, they don't tell you that phosporus and magnisium are also important. So quick drinking anything that is artifically carbinated as the carbon dioxide leaches the phosporus from your system and bones... then increase your magnisium!!! Calcium can not be metabolized properly into the system without magnisium! After trial and error I finally discovered that to eliminate MY pain, I must take 4x more magnisium than calcium, and to better metabolize the magnisium I also take Medical doses of Vitamin E. For me this means 6 pills every morning (with no RX side effects). I realized that the prescriptions help right away but I found the side effects to be more thatn I could handle... so 30 or so days after taking my vitamins and minerals I finally felt relief. That was 3 years ago! Now I just tweek my doses here and there depending on my diet. I hope this helps someone. Thanks for listening. QUALITY OF LIFE is the end result.

This is for Diane:

Stop making the drug companies too rich.
Seems to me with all those medications you were taking didn,t do muuch for you.
This new drug after a time will not help because it will be imune to your system.

Stop complaining and try to help your self with some some good old-fashioned natural foods, drinks, and herbs, meditation, help others pray to your God for strength and courage.

peace be with You!

Did anyone hear about EFT?

I really suggest that you look into it.
Pain comes from the brain
The more we think about the pain, the more we feel it. The law of attraction! We wait for the pain-like before we get up we "know" the pain will be here and we anticipate it-sure enough it comes.
Last year I had a terrible pain in my knee- when I came to the doctor he told me that he has to give me a shot of cortisone into my knee. I told him "forget about it-I only use medicine from "grandma's chest".
He had the nerve to tell me "you will come crawling for it"
I told him that not only won't I come crawling but that I never want to see him again.
I started doing EFT. The first day every hour.
I tried to remeber when I felt the first pain-what happened in my life that day.
Thank G-d it all went away!!!
everybody-look into it:

I am reading everybody's comments above and I feel for all of you. I just responded to another site, so this is actually my second response. I have neuropathy, diabetes, arthritis, vertigo, fibromyalgia, bursitis.I have had all of this since about 36, i am now 51. I to am soooo tired of the pain.I have to push myself to do anything. i am always tired and when i do something i am exhausted beyond imagineability. I am tired of being sick and tired. To keep this as short as possible my doctor told me about Savella, I didn't want to hear it, but i tried it very slowly for several weeks and have worked my way up to 100mg. and here i am hoping to give someone this info to anyone reading this that i hope it works for you. i am not 100% but let me tell you I FEEL HUMAN!!!I haven't felt that in years. I am moving more and i can do more, i know it won't work for everybody, but i have tried naproxen, cymbalta, lyrica, gabapentin, prozac (had a horrible reaction to that) neurontin. All i can say is try it, thats all we can keep doing is to try. I do have HNE for health insurance and I had to get prior approval. My co-pay is 50.00 a month. To me this is worth it. For those of you who do not have insurance maybe you can find out the drug company that makes Savella and contact them. Some times they have programs to help individuals with their medications. I hope this helps someone.

I have arthralgia and it seems that ALL of my joints hurt MOST of the time. I was given Voltaren gel which worked perfectly...until I had a liver function test and a problem was discovered. Stopped Voltaren and test resolved.....now have pain again. Just an FYI.....use this gel sparingly as overuse will effect your liver.

I have many of the same symptoms that some of you have described. It started out in my right ankle which became very swollen. The Dr. said it was arthritis and prescribed Celebrex. My primary care Dr. said I couldn't take Celebrex as I have high blood pressure. Now I also have sciatic pain down my left side. My left knee is swollen and painful. I have taken Ibuprofen and Naproxin but they don't seem to help. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I'm suprised not to find Low Level Laser Therapy as an alternative for pain management... With FDA over-the-counter approval for OA pain management.

I have been using a QLaser1000 low level laser device that is FDA approved for over-the-counter use for pain management of OA of the hand. I'm using it on my knee and foot finding that it reduces inflamation and pain relief. I also practice Tai Chi and meditation on a regular basis.

I have been reading all of these comments and I think there is not a lot that can be done. I have the spurs, they burn so bad sometimes in my finger joints, have the rocks in my feet and toes, toss and turn like a fish out of water because of pressure point pain and yes I have memory foam. Tried the prednisone, I had the shakes something terrible so weaned off that. Can sure predict the weather though. Thank goodness for paperback books too, and all this because of Tamoxifen that I took for 5 years to prevent cancer from coming back. Oh had I known.
Well, I have sounded off now, thanks for the space. Going to take my 3 fish oil, my 2 Glucosimine, 2 aleve, 1600 mg of calcium, a potassium and my cup of ginger tea. Cider vinegar NO, bad indigestion. Going to try the Tai Chi next week. God bless all of you.

You know what really pisses me off is, here we go and spend millions of dollars to develop pain meds and then the damn doctors don't wont to give them to you when you really need them...and people with RA/Fibro NEED them because at this point with no cure they are the only bandaid we have!!! WTF? I have to beg my doctor to refill my RX for just hydrocodone! I only take 2 most of the time a day, and 4 on really bad days...that to me is not a big deal!!! If I was taking 8 a day, I might say yeah that's to much but I'm NOT! I just need to get through the day and be able to do the bare essentials without being in insane pain! Get with the program doctors and quit being afraid of the meds that where made to help people in chronic pain!

I have severe osteo arthritis with lots of bone spurson my joints in both hands and had to have a shot of steroids. Within one hour the pain eased a lot and the next day i could deal with it again. I have had firbromyalgia 17 years, I have used all of the topical ointments, pain med daily do help most of the time but NOT when i have five active growing spurs on one finger! I take a lot of meds to be able to sleep because it so important to sleep deeply, which i don't, i have sleep apnea also. a mess, huh? candi

I have been reading everyone's comments, and feel so badly for folks without health insurance. I have osteoarthitis in my fingers and knees, my fingers look like my grandmother's did, all crooked and knobby, and my knee is getting ready for a replacement, but I'm not! My physical therapist has been great about strengthening the quadricepts mucsles and I can walk without a limp now-still slowly , though. And it is definitely painful, mostly due to some fluid swelling in the knee. Anyways, I wanted to hear if anyone else is affected by the weather. We recently had a week of "wintery mix" ,then snow for about 48 hours. Everything hurt, my fingers were tender, my knees and shoulders, neck all hurt, and my sinus had pressure, and some blood vessels burst in my nose.. All this pain is very wearing on one's spiritsand this was a bad one. It really helped to know that spring will come, and the earthquake in Chile also put things into perspective. But while they were having an earthquake, was having the worst response to the weather I've ever had, and attributing it to aging. I am worried about next winter. What do you all thnk?

I take Lyrica and Prozac. The prozac relieves stress and therefore the triggers for Fibro are lessened. I also use a topical rub RX only called Voltaren. Great stuff for the feet!! I have DJD as well and tramadol helps with that. Hope this helps someone!

I have used "LAkota" for arthritis, a rub on that can be bought in drugstores.
It really helps joint pain due to arthritis.
There are also capsules but have not tried them as of yet. They are not expensive and well worth a try.

It brings up so many of my emotions as I sit here and read about the suffering because of arthritis. As an acupuncturist that has successfully treated fibromyalgia and arthritis (whether rheumatoid or "standard"), I know that all of these treatments - drugs, injections, exercise, surgery, etc. work for some and do not work for others. It's also evident in some of your statements that this is true. I thank you all for sharing. As with any disease I suggest that you make sure to keep taking your own health into your hands and trust all health practitioners as far as you can push them (notice: I didn't say throw, because I think we are of some help). Figure out what works for you. Do the research, do your own searching (research and search are not the same). If something you do works for you and nothing you've ever read/heard says anything about, accept it as valid. Listen to what your body is telling you besides the pain. I understand it's loud (so to speak), but listen to it. I'm sure some of you (maybe all, I don't know) are familiar with this concept that your body has the message, all you need to do is listen. I DO also suggest that you look into oriental medicine. Find an acupuncturist and talk to him/her (via phone or in office) and ASK as many questions as you can think up. If that practitioner doesn't answer your questions or doesn't feel right, pick another one. Oriental Medicine is amazing with arthritis. I do also think that there are other lifestyle factors that need to be considered as well - such as diet and psychoemotional health. If considering oriental medicine, one thing that I strongly suggest is to make sure that you go to a LICENSED acupuncturist (L.Ac.) vs. a MEDICAL acupuncturist (M.Ac). An L.Ac. has gone through (check with your state to see what the requirements are and ask your L.Ac. about their training, because not all states are the same, yet.) 2900 - 3000 hrs, whereas a M. Ac. has only gone through somewhere between 200-500 hrs of acupuncture training and their primary scope of practice most likely has NOTHING to do with Oriental Medicine. I will check back here for the next few days in case anyone has any further questions.

I would like to recommend a book a friend gave me it is amazing and makes so much sense
I can give you the sight to look into this I love the book lots of good help. The web sight is WWW.watercure.com,also for you I've been studying Penns.folklore and some good remedies. Natural work better,I have many health problems and have had alot of success in fighting with detoxing ,natural organic foods,no caffines or sodas now I order ice water when out with kids instead of pop, I grow and can my own food as much as I can. This is a life change we each must make if we are to win the battle of all the toxins we take in from food and enviroment. Apple
cided vinegar 1 teaspoon and1 teaspoon of honey in warm water 3xs a day helps with arthritis Start to detoxify your body, eat whole foods not processed and drink at least 8 glasses of water a day . Fish oils omega oils. Holy basil oil, oregano oil, Stay away from red meats. Please look into the Natural path sights I have been fighting cancer and other fibro arthiritis,Heart condition and have had to many parts taken but I decided to fight and I research natural remedies as
they don't cause long term damage as some of the medicine given to us. Good luck to all of you who suffer. Do your home work its worth it.

I get so frustrated with the "specialists" saying exercise and massage will help. I try to exercise and my job involves walking, but I hurt so bad when I'm done that I can't move. And don't even think about a massage, it hurts too much when my little dog lays on my lap or my husband rubs my arm. I have had fibro since I was 18. I am 43 now. I also have RA and was on Methotrexate (8 pills a wk) I am off all meds due to no insurance. Withdrawl from Cymbalta was horrific, and I weaned myself off it. But, I was on 120mg a day and I felt good. No metho, every joint hurts. I get bursitis a lot. I don't like to go to bed, cuz I don't want to get up the next morning in pain. We need to try to stay positive and help family understand how we feel. Maybe have them go a round with Mike Tyson...LOL. Keep smiling, we have others that do understand....

I have had Fibromyalgia for over 10 years and have been put on every medication possible. After reading the comment written by others I have to agree conderning the pain around and under the knee caps. Alot of times it feels as though they are on fire and it only gets worse as I get older. Isn't there something that can help? anything?
Thank you, Peggy Gelder

For those who don't have health insurance for medications....some of the drug companies have excellent programs to help out with the cost of their medication. For example, I take Enbrel injections. I have insurance that pays for most of it, but there's a special assistance program that the manufacturers of Enbrel sponsor that I qualify for....even with Insurance and being employed full time. It pays my $45.00 co-pay for me for up to 6 months and then a partial payment after that.

They also have a nurse or pharmacist you can talk to about any questions or concerns related to your disease and the medication you're taking. They not only help provide the medication, they'll also send bandaids, alcohol pads, and a "sharps" container for disposing of the syringe after your injection. In fact they even sent me a small travel bag that's a cooler pack since the medication has to be kept refrigerated. It has bandaids, alcohol pads, a small sharps container and a gel ice pack included. They also send an instruction booklet if you are doing your own injections and an instructional DVD. I have always been treated with courtesy and respect by anyone I've dealt with through this program.

I have recently been to Rush Oak Hospital in Chicago. Dr, Greg Nicholson and the staff of orthopedic surgeons are rated 6th in the entire nation for orthopedic care. I was able to get an appointment immediately and after suffering in severe chronic pain for several years I have found a doctor that not only diagnosed my problem, but fixed it for good!! I would highly recommend he and the entire group of doctors. He can be found by searching google and type in his name. I did not need a referral, and believe me, I am fairly young and I felt there was no hope, but I would beg, borrow or sell the farm to get my life back!

What, if anything, can I use to relieve my pain (other than excersize). Some days I can barely move and am unable to get out of bed. The medications my doctor prescribed for me are very expensive and my insurance will not pay for them and I cannot afford to pay for them myself since I am unemployed. Please help me find something for the pain so I can function doing normal everyday activities. Excersize had not helped me.

I have tried too many meds to count but cant find anything that works for very long! it seems to work for awhile then it stops working. I was wondering is anyone knew if that is NORMAL? also is you know of anything that does work. I feel so worthless at times because I cant just ignore it. That makes me feel weak. ANY SUGGESTIONS!

I have had arthritis since I was five years of age. I take coral calcium daily. It has helped me. I eat pineapple and Papaya, those are both suppose to help. I try not to take any medication at all. I am 47 years old. I do walk for exercise in large stores like Lowes when the weather is bad.
I have had success with going to a chiorpractic doctor for pain or stiffness in my neck. I use the vibrator on my neck before bed time. It relaxes that stiffness.
I soak in hot bath water or a hot tub when I can. I try to stay active to keep up with my children. I try to keep a positive attitude about life. I have tried the gin/raisin and it does help too. I have also drank the apple cider vinegar (1 part) 2 part grape juice, 1 part apple juice. That is hard to swallow but does give a little relief to sore joints.

Hi Ginny,

I'm in Columbus. We're practically neighbors. :) I have the same symptoms on the right side and I talked to my massage therapist about it. She discovered that the muscles in the LEFT were extremely tight and the right was painful because of the overcorrecting it was forced to do. She worked with the muscles in my face, neck and right under the jawline. The results were quite surprising. I felt great. Hope this helps a bit! Hang in there, I know it's frustrating.

Ginny in Ohio, My wife had TMJ with those symptoms.Hold at your jawbone sockets and see if your jawbone touches down evenly when you close your jaw.If not the ball and or socket could be damaged. My wife ended up with braces to change her {bite pattern].It helped.Chewing gum will really irritate it.

I have pain in my right jaw, which travels up in my ear and into my right eye. I've been told by my chiropractor that it is muscular - I did have a pinched nerve in my right mid back - shoulder area and she has that unpinched and that has given me much relief - but the discomfort is always there in my jaw and sometimes travels down my neck - front and back.

Any suggestions.

I've had an MRI and a cat scan - they say they see nothing, except my glands in my neck area are a little swollen - 3 of them - but no signs of cancer.

Thanks

In reading all the symptoms each one of us have, it's amazing to see how many of us can relate.
I am going through menopause with major hot flashes. I don't want artificial hormones in my body so I am not sure what relief I will get. I also have pain in my feet, legs and hands. Blood clots were ruled out when I had a ultrasound of my legs. I can't sleep at night due to the heat and the severe pain that I have in my hands. It's very frightening, one to think that your hands and fingers can become deformed from the pain...my tendons and nerves hurt a lot. Can anyone shed some light on getting some relief and where to go from here. As one writer said without insurance it's difficult and you have to wait even with an appointment. Thank you, Anita

Well its three in the morning, can't sleep again. Woke up with severe pain in my right arm. has been hurting about six weeks but learned to live with it, but it was so bad this morning that I almost went to the ER, but then I thought well they won't help. I have no insurance, been there several times for pain. I have diabetis, high blood pressure, neropathy, fibromalgia, 3 bulging disc, one ruptured disc, sciatica and other back issues, but no one will help me with my pain. I try all home remedies, eat the best I can, It is to the point I can't clean the house the way I want, can't serve my husband the way I want, can't keep my grandchildren, can't do the yard work, laundry, scared to drive anymore, my 65 year old mother comes to take me to town to pay bills etc. I am 43. When i get so mad at myself and exert to do these things, oh how I suffer,. Sometimes to the point of screaming in pain, crying all day, walking the floors, absolutly mental. I was layed off a year ago and my husband is the only source of income making 13.50 an hour. I cannot afford to go to a Dr. one time a week before they figure out my problems. It seems they don't want to help me get better, just want the money. Does anyone know how I can get help? Worked since I was 13 and 75% of the time with insurance. Now that I don't have insurance Dr.'s say they have no new patient openings? WHat the hell is that?
Any suggestions, anybody can help me I am at my ropes end.
Sincerely,
Donya

HI JENNIFER,
I WROTE ON THE FIBRO BRAIN FOG PAGE QUITE A STORY, AND YES, DRUG CONTRACTS, DOCTORS TELLING YOU IT IS IN YOUR MIND.
YOU MIGHT WANT TO READ MY LONG STORY TOO.
I CAN'T EVEN BE DOWN BECAUSE I HAVE 3 KIDS, 15, 10, AND 7. THE STRESS OF SUPPOSEDLY BEING THE STRONG ONE, AND BEING THE ONLY FAMILY MEMBER, THAT RUNS AFTER IT ALL, IS SICKENING TO ME.. MY KIDS DON'T UNDERSTAND, EVEN SHYING AWAY FROM THOSE SUPPOSED FRIENDS, THAT TELL YOU BUT YOU LOOK HEALTHY...
IF DOCTORS ARE SO AFRAID OF THE PAIN MEDS, THEN WHY DON'T THEY DO MORE RESEARCH, TO FIND ACTUAL MEDICATIONS THAT DO WORK, AND ARE NOT LADEN WITH SIDE EFFECTS, SOME REALLY SERIOUS AND EVEN SOME DEADLY.. SO WE CAN GET OFF THESE PAIN MEDS, THAT REALLY ARE JUST A BANDAID,NOT A CURE...THOSE JUST MASK THE PROBLEM, AND WHO SAYS USING THESE WONDERFUL PAIN MEDICATIONS, WE REALLY HURT OURSELVES EVEN MORE LIKE OUR LIVER.. FOR THOSE PAIN MEDS, HAVE A TON OF TYLENOL (ACETAMINOPHEN), EVEN OVER THE COUNTER TYLENOL AND EXCEDRIN, YES HUGE ON THE NEWS IN THE LAST WEEKS...
WHEN A MEDICATION BEHIND THE MEDICATION TITLE OF THE MEDICATION SAYS IN CAPS ( APAP) THAT IS THE WONDERFUL ACETAMINOPHEN, WHY SOME MUCH ACETAMINOPHEN NEEDS TO BE IN THESE PAIN MEDICATIONS, I DON'T KNOW, AND IT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE. I HAVE PUT UP ALL THE TYLENOL OVER COUNTER, AND EXCEDRIN, AND TYLENOL PM. TYLENOL ARTHRITIS, AND TYLENOL EXTRA STRENGTH. FOR THE LAST THING I WOULD SAY IS THAT WE ON TOP OF IT ALL NEED LIVER PROBLEMS..THE ARTICLE ABOVE TALKS ABOUT ACUPUNCTURE, AND OR MASSAGE.. BUT WHO CAN AFFORD THAT ?? WHEN YOU HAVE A FAMILY WITH KIDS TO CONSIDER TOO ?? LET STAND IN THIS ECONOMY ?? LET'S GET REAL..
I DO PLENTY OF STRETCHING AND MOVING AROUND ALL DAY AND NIGHT.. RUNNING AFTER SMALL CHILDREN AND THEIR PROGRAMS, HOUSE WORK, GROCERY SHOPPING.. I LIVE UP AT 7600 FEET IN THE FRONTIER OF NEW MEXICO, AND THE NEAREST CITY WHICH IS JUST A TINY ONE, IS 65 MILES EACH WAY. SO SHOPPING, GOING TO YOUR DOCTOR, IS AN ALL DAYER, I CALL IT...
THE SPECIALIST I SAW, DIDN'T HELP, HE UNDERSTOOD, BUT JUST WITH PAIN MEDICATIONS, NOT A HELP THERE. I WOULD HAVE TO LEAVE MY FAMILY AND GO ON A FIBRO QUEST.. PITCH A TENT, TO GO DO ALL THESE TESTS, LET STAND HAVE A MONEY TREE.. I CALL THAT IN THE PERFECT WORLD.. I SWIM, HECK NEXT TO A RIVER...YOGA EVEN.. BUT NONE OF THAT WORKS FOR THE LONG TERM. WHAT TELL YOUR FAMILY, YOU ARE GOING TO DO ALL THIS, AND THEY FEND FOR THEMSELVES ???... EVEN HAD TIGGER POINTS DONE, AND BOY 2 DAYS LATER, I WAS IN MORE PAIN, THEN I HAD BEEN BEFORE... I JUST EVEN BOUGHT A NUWAVE WHICH COOKS ON RACKS, TO PULL THE FATS AND GREASE OUT OF FOODS, WE ALL LOVE TO EAT. HECK YESTERDAY ATE FRESH CAUGHT FISH.. SO THAT MY WHOLE FAMILY AND KIDS COULD ENJOY A HEALTHIER STYLE OF LIVING.
INSTEAD OF COOKING SEVERAL DIFFERENT DISHES, SINCE SOME KIDS, DON'T LIKE TO EAT HEALTHY HAD TO THINK OUTSIDE OF THE BOX, DOCTOR'S SURE LIKE TO PUT US IN, OR LABEL US....
LIKE YOU SAID IN YOUR NOTE, SOMETIMES I WISH THOSE DOCTORS THAT TELL US ALL THE ABOVE, THAT THEY SHOULD HAVE WHAT WE DO, AND SEE HOW THEY FEEL THEN, AND WHAT BAD ADVISE THEY WOULD HAVE FOR US THEN,,,I THINK THEY WOULD SING TO A DIFFERENT TUNE THEN..

I am a 31 yr old female. I was diagnosed with RA when I was a teen. I also have Fibromyalgia I get horrible pain and swelling in my hands, bottoms of my feet, shoulders, hips, elbows, ribs, down my spine, and recently in my jaw and around my eyes. I hate it! I don't feel like doing anything because when I do, I end up in be for a week or more. That just isn't my idea of fun. Now the Doctor's in my clinic are trying to get people off narcotics. The doctors here don't seem to care or realize that there are SOME people who really need them and don't abuse them. I recently had to take a drug test for my doctor because I signed a chronic pain contract. ok! I don't abuse my meds. I take my pain meds when I need them maybe 5 or 6 days out of the month.I just seems like doctors now days think everyone with a chronic pain has a drug problem. anyone else experiencing this?

I have had Fibrpmyalgia since april 2003, although I didn't know what it was until just a couple years ago. I used to be an athlete, now when I exersise I end up in so much pain that I am afraid of exersising now!
I am getting ready to start an exersise program again, but I fear the pain so much, it holds me back. (I already live in so much pain, I just don't want to have anymore!)

I guess I will have to just go for it and keep a jounal....Anybody else feel this way?

The best thing I've found for knee pain is the process of Sylvisc or it's generic form. It is injected into the knee joint by a physican and usually comes in a series of 3 to 5 injections. I've been doing this for about 7 years now and have only needed the injections about every 1.5 years. Without this medicine, I cannot go do many of the activities that are normal part of being a housekeeper, wife, groceryshopper, etc! If you are allergic to poultry products, do not use it!

I have been a candidate for knee replacement surgery for over ten years and up to now have resisted it. I have some pretty painful days but have almost always been able to take my daily walks. I am 81 years old and have suffered some knee pain for nearly 20 years. However, the pain doesn't seem to get any worse, but who knows - I may be in for a surprise. Until that happens, I'll continue ingesting a minimum of sweets and enjoy my daily walks.
