There’s no one best way to manage arthritis pain or achieve pain relief. Part of the frustration for people in pain, doctors acknowledge, is that no single technique is guaranteed to produce complete and consistent pain relief. Often you need a combination of methods. And you may need to change your mix of techniques over time – adding this, dropping that – as your condition changes.
Some people first try nonprescription medications such as aspirin, acetaminophen (Tylenol), ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) or naproxen (Aleve) and get pain relief, and some will eventually turn to their doctors for stronger prescription medications. After time, people may resort to surgical repair or replacement of a persistently painful joint or removal of pain-causing tissues.
Meanwhile, between medications and surgery, think of arthritis pain management as a continuing journey, with options at each stop along the way that progress from least risky and least invasive on up. Consider this your travel guide. Read on to learn about the options at each stop and you can plan your itinerary and decide the order in which you try each option.
Step 1: Learn about your arthritis pain.
Patient education is potentially the most critical therapy in arthritis pain management, according to the American Pain Society. Learning all you can about pain treatments can help break down roadblocks to pain relief. Preconceived notions and misconceptions held by health care workers, employers, patients or their family members can be big roadblocks.
Some examples? A health-care worker who doesn’t take pain seriously, a relative who downplays pain and isn’t supportive, a patient who fears becoming addicted to pain medication or believes assistive devices, such as canes, indicate weakness. The health care system itself can put up barriers, too, such as making access to pain treatment difficult, although studies have shown pain is undertreated.
Step 2: Rehabilitate your body.
• Regaining posture. Proper posture is no slouch in preventing arthritis pain. Years of compensating for a sore knee can result in pain in a hip or ankle. Jutting the abdomen forward can cause lower back pain, as can slouching in a desk chair. Physical therapists can observe how you sit, stand and walk and teach you how to adjust your posture so you can move with less pain, which may allow you to do more health-improving exercise.
• Exercising. Getting regular exercise strengthens joint-supporting structures and improves flexibility. A physical therapist can suggest appropriate movements that provide a full range of motion. Physical activity also gets your heart pumping blood faster through your body, warming tissues and bringing them oxygen and nutrients needed for repair. Losing just 10 pounds of body weight takes 30 to 60 pounds of pressure off the knee.
• Finding solutions. Sore joints don’t just keep you from getting much-needed exercise; they also make necessary activities problematic: bathing, dressing, writing, driving and performing one’s job, for instance.

New to the dx: fibro + live on West coast of FL. Does anyone know of a support group in or close to Venice, FL?
With sincere appreciation,
Joyce
anyone else have these side effects?
Thanks and here is wishing you all pain free days~
I have really painful hands , feet and elbows I have had blood tests to check for inflammation and they are normal, I have fibro and it seems to be all my pains get linked to this :-( My hands swell terrible and puff up like sausages and I can't even hold a cup some days and my feet have shooting pains through the soles hey keep me awake at night, I have just about had enough of all of this could it be this is arthritis of some description?
Take care XXX
I have fibro,a bulging disc in my neck and pain everywhere. I was always missing work because of all the pain. I applied for Social Security Disability, it took 2 tries, but I was finally approved. You might want to look into this.
And anyone else that just can't get up in the morning and go to work.
I've lost some weight, didn't help though, physical therapy is not something I am able to do at this time as I have a very demanding schedule right now. I wish the doctor would probe this problem more and recommend some type of pain med.
My spinal stimulator and Fetanyl patch have helped me the most with chronic pain (partially due to RA, also osteoporosis, spinal stenosis, adult scoliosis, sciatica). Microwave pads do more than OTC wraps. PT hand therapy helps painful joints. Carpel tunnel surgery is fairly easy, a 2 wk. recovery for me, like new. ( carpel tunnel is common with RA) Pain is significant immediately after but well-worth it. I had extra pain med. for it for only 3 days. My RA is dormant so, I may be a different case. i only had 2 flares at 41 yrs. when diagnosed, none since and I'm 65.
Your inflamatory arthritis sounds like mine. I have psoriatic arthritis without psoriasis. My mom had psoriasis though. Sternum pain effects everything you do. I have pain breathing, coughing etc
A friend gave me a sort of brace that goes around the bottom of the knee. It seems to help a little. The same company offers a "semi-custom" brace the is tailored ot the inside or outside(where the painis) and to either theleft or right knee.
Has anyone had any success with braces or wraps of any ort?
Your neck pain is primary and the shoulder pains I believe are referred pains.
Try this exercises which are simple to perform.
1.Push chin up with both palms on the sides of the chin and at the same time push you head down. This acts on the spine's upper portion.
2.Join hands at the back of the head and push down,at the same time push your head backwards.
3. Keep right hand under the right side of the chin, push it up and at the same time push the head down (sideways)
4.Follow with the left side
5.Join the hands above you head and raise them fully and at the same time stretch your spine.
6.Rotate head slowly clockwise 5/6 times and anticlockwise 5/6 times.
I am sure and pray to GOD that your pains will subside.
If you find relief do the exercises daily.
DO NOT USE TOO MUCH FORCE AT THE BEGINNING
Wish you all the BEST
1. Continue doing exercises from your physical therapy sessions. Do not skip a day.
2. Apply Bio-Freeze (a quick-absorbing gel that gives instant relief; cyrotherapy cold remedy with no side effects). Get it from a legitimate source. If you buy it on the internet, it could be tampered with. Ask your health provider. I purchase Bio-Freeze from an Occupational Therapist.
3. Apply warm packs (aromatherapy) - in a large clean cotton sock, put in: 1 1/2 cups raw rice, 1 T whole peppercorns, 1 T whole cloves, 1 T mustard seeds. Tie sock tightly 2" from the top with cotton string. Microwave at high for 45 seconds. Wrap in a thin towel and apply to painful area. Wonderful scent and soothes. Store in refrigerator when not in use to prevents bugs in rice.
4. Ask your doctor for Tylenol with Codeine. Do not exceed recommended dosage.
5. Water excercises has helped my cousin with her knee pain.
God bless you. Hope this helps and here's to less pain in our lives.
A few yrs passed & going to the Rheumatoid MD
I was diagnosed with (2) two Crush Discs - L-4 - L-5 for which I was operated upon succefully .Thanks to a Higher Power the MD was a Pediatric Nurosurgon!
The L4 Disc was splintered so badly the the spin off when I was opened allowed a particulate of the disc to splinter off and
effectly shot a piece of it at my spinal cord and penitrated it whereby the Sinoval Fluid leaked out and a Fat Patch was sewen to stop the leaking fluid!!!
I now have Scolisis as of 4/11 the Pain is so bad I was scheduled for a MRI of Lower Spine(results pending). This is what really gets me upset!!! My MD says the the pain is generated from the Scolisis and has nothing to do with the RA?
Meanwhile I can hardly walk without assistance becasue the PAIN is so intense I fall or have to stop before I get overwhelmed by it .
Anybody out there have any ideas what is going ON? THE MDs' appear to want to schedually me for another disc operation @ L4-L5 for what ever reason?
I friend of mine has gone on cannibis tea with the butter at night. I really think I will try it. Anything is better than what I am doing now.
People just don't get the pain, sometimes i could scream.
Thanks for listening.
ANA and sed rate. Is osteo the same as "inflammatory" arthritis? I didn't think to ask him to clarify. I am an exercise instructor and this is really hitting me hard.
I am used to being active and athletic....not right now. I even teach the arthritis programs at my Y.
Knee replacement four months ago with major rehab has only damaged the hip. No more surgery, just hope the liver can handle all the pain meds
It's hard to keep giving up mobile activities in my life, I feel better knowing many of you KNOW what I'm going through. Bless you!
Is there any Rheumatologists that specialize in Psoriatic and Osteo Arthritis in the Kansas City area?
i need a new type of medication..
x-rays show arthritis in shoulders and neck, plus detached mucsles in shoulder. very painful! any suggestions?
Thank you all for sharing your stories. I don't feel so alone. I have had arthritis for about ten years. My doctor said it's because I'm overweight. Doesn't help I'm sure, but he make it sound like I'm to blame - and maybe I deserve it. My family is supportive but can't understand. Thank you also for talking about the muscle cramps. I have spoken to Doctors about my cramps at night and the only answer I get is eat bananas. Bananas are wonderful but my problem is not solved by them. Now that I know it's not an unheard of companion to arthritis maybe I can attack that pain a little better informed. Every day I get up is a good day. After reading this forum, I'm getting a new doctor. Bless you all, and I'm so sorry you hurt.
I think having someone who can really relate would provide a mental buffer for the tough times. Obviously we are used to sucking it up - and forging forward.... but validation of the discomfort is really comforting....
I hope to use the many tips offered by others here in hopes to get some pain relief.
By joining the Arthritis Foundation, I realize I am not alone. My family members have not idea how much I really hurt, so it is comforting to know there are others I can reach out to.
I really like one lady's quote (from VASUE6398) For me it really hits home:
"We each have our own story, each with our own pains and tramors - but trust you are not alone. That is my motto. God never puts more on a person than one can bear. Others who do not have our diseases, do not understand and especially - the stress from others. God Bless."
I am a 37 year old woman and have been living with the constant pain of RA for 9 years. Through the multitude of medications and doctors, I have managed to stay positive up until recently. Out of answers and sick and tired, of being sick and tired, from either the medications, or the disease itself, I have been searching online for any help or advice. That is when I stumbled on to this website.
I just wanted to say, that reading all of your blogs and personal stories has helped me to feel hopeful and connected. While I have a network of family and friends who offer their unrelenting support and empathy, its nice to at least hear, that Im not alone in my struggle.
Chronic pain conditions of any sort are unbelievably hard to live with, and I wanted to say to any and all people looking for answers and comfort, that I understand.
I understand how hard it is to get moving some days.. to just get out of bed, some days.. to stay positive when the pain sucks the life right out of you.. I know HOW DEEP you have to dig emotionally, to keep pressing forward despite medications that don't work, doctor's who don't listen, and the constant struggle of trying to regain a normal life.
I! UNDERSTAND!!!!
I wish I had something to offer in regards to remedies that help.. I have yet to find anything that really works without debilatating side effects.. Just know my heart and prayers go out to us all. And while I cant offer more, every single one of you, is in my thoughts.
Thank you for your stories and courage. They helped me to push through another day.
Namaste..
I do see a rheumotologist and after trying so many different types of medication; I am now taking methotrexate and embrel. These two drugs seem to help with the pain. I haven't had a flare up in a long time. And, I do excercise on a daily basis.
I do enjoy the Arthritis Today magazine. I read it faithfully. So keep up the good work with its important information.
My whole life has changed this year. I haven't been able to work since the first of the year and now i have tremors. The rheumatologist at Ntl Jewish said that he had not seen anyone with the tremors as bad as mine in the 10 years he's been practicing there. So now i am on another medication to help with the tremors.
i am ready for my life to come back to some normalization as much as possible. I know i will have to use oxygen the rest of my life but i can live with that.
To all those having to deal with these sorts of things my best advice is to stay positive. Positive results bring positive results and makes it so much easier to deal with things in life.
Here's the product www.myasea.com/toddklimson
Get diclofenac gel from a Canadian pharmacy without prescription or from your doctor by prescription. Rub it on the sore spot to take away pain. And be sure you take short rests when you can during the day. I have had arthritis, fibromyalgia and myofacial pain syndrome for 20 years and all these things help at one time or another. Good luck, understanding people around you help too!
I have recently started scuba diving and what a wonder. Even on a bad day, like this Saturday when my joints were really hurting after 3 weeks w/out meds due to an infection, I get in the (cold - 52F) water and the pain is gone. Nothing hurts. Being in the water, weightless, floating with the current. It is so cool. I now try to dive at least once a week and the effect is always the same and usually lasts until I go to sleep at night.
Just wanted to share that :-)
A friend recently shared with me that she uses "Restful Legs" by Hylands. I have found that within 5 to 15 minutes after I put two of the quick-dissolving pills under my tongue, I get relief at least for hours, sometimes for days.
I don't know what's in these pills but I am glad my friend told me about them.
I hope to subscribe to Arthritis Today soon.
I'm new here and new in having Osteoarthritis....diagnosed just 6 mths ago. After doing a great deal of reading/research I've come to the following conclusion to help with the pain and live as normal a life as possible...here are the important things:
1. Eat Healthy [lose weight as needed]
2. Don't smoke
3. Enroll in a water therapy class [your local YWCA/YMCA] or create your own water therapy in the bathtub for warm soaks and gentle stretching exercises. A little meditation while soaking also truly helps.
4. Follow closely what your doctor[s] prescribe in pain meds and/or NSAIDs.
I hope this helps someone.
Basically, I am not eating much processed foof. Try this! I want to share this with everyone because it can't hurt.
i have been suffering from lupus since last five years which means severe pain and inflammation in all joints. Im on drugs since then, but i remember just because of my motivation a time came when i used run 3 kilometers in 14 minutes. What i understood of all types of arthritus is never GIVE UP and OMEGA 3 CAPSULES, busy routine , hot bath before starting the day and before sleep, good meals and own intrest of work will reduce the pain. keep stickin to bed, long sittings on office chairs will liable to increase the pain. i still donot know much about type of exercize would be better for me, so i will be obliged if somebody can mke me more wise or send me exercizes
cellobrex . any advise will be much appreciated.
There is quite a lot.
glucosamine-chondroitin-msm
BOSWELIA
devil's claw
turmeric
ginger
for pain use topically 6-10 drops of WILD OREGANO OIL mixed with 1 tbsp of "normal" (usually olive) cooking oil
some people swear by DMSO-DIMETHYLSULFOXIDE.
Good luck to all!
i'm 44 years old now and i'm always in constant pain. i've taken Enbrel, Prednisone metrotraxte, and many different pain pills and nothing seems to work. these medications seem like just putting a bandage on a scrape. i used to have at least 15 good days a month without pain and now it seems it less than that. any suggestions.
Any advice will be appreciated.
