Five Steps to Pain Relief

There’s no one best way to manage arthritis pain or achieve pain relief. Part of the frustration for people in pain, doctors acknowledge, is that no single technique is guaranteed to produce complete and consistent pain relief. Often you need a combination of methods. And you may need to change your mix of techniques over time – adding this, dropping that – as your condition changes.

Some people first try nonprescription medications such as aspirin, acetaminophen (Tylenol), ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) or naproxen (Aleve) and get pain relief, and some will eventually turn to their doctors for stronger prescription medications. After time, people may resort to surgical repair or replacement of a persistently painful joint or removal of pain-causing tissues.

Meanwhile, between medications and surgery, think of arthritis pain management as a continuing journey, with options at each stop along the way that progress from least risky and least invasive on up. Consider this your travel guide. Read on to learn about the options at each stop and you can plan your itinerary and decide the order in which you try each option.

Step 1: Learn about your arthritis pain.

Patient education is potentially the most critical therapy in arthritis pain management, according to the American Pain Society. Learning all you can about pain treatments can help break down roadblocks to pain relief. Preconceived notions and misconceptions held by health care workers, employers, patients or their family members can be big roadblocks.

Some examples? A health-care worker who doesn’t take pain seriously, a relative who downplays pain and isn’t supportive, a patient who fears becoming addicted to pain medication or believes assistive devices, such as canes, indicate weakness. The health care system itself can put up barriers, too, such as making access to pain treatment difficult, although studies have shown pain is undertreated.

Step 2: Rehabilitate your body.

• Regaining posture. Proper posture is no slouch in preventing arthritis pain. Years of compensating for a sore knee can result in pain in a hip or ankle. Jutting the abdomen forward can cause lower back pain, as can slouching in a desk chair. Physical therapists can observe how you sit, stand and walk and teach you how to adjust your posture so you can move with less pain, which may allow you to do more health-improving exercise.

• Exercising. Getting regular exercise strengthens joint-supporting structures and improves flexibility. A physical therapist can suggest appropriate movements that provide a full range of motion. Physical activity also gets your heart pumping blood faster through your body, warming tissues and bringing them oxygen and nutrients needed for repair. Losing just 10 pounds of body weight takes 30 to 60 pounds of pressure off the knee.

• Finding solutions. Sore joints don’t just keep you from getting much-needed exercise; they also make necessary activities problematic: bathing, dressing, writing, driving and performing one’s job, for instance.

Since December of 2009 I have been diagnosed with Arthrits of the Spine. Chronic Lung Disease called Emphasema, Parkinsons and Diabetes Level @2. Life is almost unbearable some days as the pain from the arthritis is so painful. I live on Oxygen 16 out of 24 hours in a day. take very agressive medication for the Parkinson's and have been taking Diabetic medication for a number of years. Nothing seems to help for the pain the arthrits gives. I enjoyed reading what others had to say about their pains and what medications they are taking. Carol Skuta

Hello to all I have read some of your stories. Here is my story and opinion on what definatly worked for me. I am 42 yrs of age and was diagnosed with Ra about 1 and 1/2 yrs. ago. I was in so much pain all I did was cry. Let me mention I am also type 1 diabetic for 36 yrs. I have the name of a book that was god sent for me. I can tell you that it works for Ra and Fibro and Osteo. As mentioned on this web site there is no advirtising so it you would like the name of it please email me at nurse16066@yahoo.com and I will email you the name and where you can get it. It was the best 17 bucks I have ever spent in my life. It saved my life as I can not take the meds for RA either because of diabetes. God bless all...

7 years with RA - and I am 35....I have been interested in a support system - finding persons who can relate to and just acknowledge the discomfort of the disease. I feel better vocalizing when I have had several days of discomfort....and my friends say "sorry" - but.......

I think having someone who can really relate would provide a mental buffer for the tough times. Obviously we are used to sucking it up - and forging forward.... but validation of the discomfort is really comforting....

I was diagnosed with severe RA 9 years ago, and my rheumatologist has had me on Humira and methotrexate almost the entire time. I feel pretty good most of the time and so far (knock on wood) the side effects have been manageable. Worth checking into with your doctor if nothing else is working. Feel better everyone-

I was recently diagnosed with RA and am uncertain of what lies ahead. After reading the many posts, I sympathize with your pain.

I hope to use the many tips offered by others here in hopes to get some pain relief.

By joining the Arthritis Foundation, I realize I am not alone. My family members have not idea how much I really hurt, so it is comforting to know there are others I can reach out to.

I really like one lady's quote (from VASUE6398) For me it really hits home:
"We each have our own story, each with our own pains and tramors - but trust you are not alone. That is my motto. God never puts more on a person than one can bear. Others who do not have our diseases, do not understand and especially - the stress from others. God Bless."

To everyone dealing with, and fighting the good fight, with chronic conditions;

I am a 37 year old woman and have been living with the constant pain of RA for 9 years. Through the multitude of medications and doctors, I have managed to stay positive up until recently. Out of answers and sick and tired, of being sick and tired, from either the medications, or the disease itself, I have been searching online for any help or advice. That is when I stumbled on to this website.

I just wanted to say, that reading all of your blogs and personal stories has helped me to feel hopeful and connected. While I have a network of family and friends who offer their unrelenting support and empathy, its nice to at least hear, that Im not alone in my struggle.

Chronic pain conditions of any sort are unbelievably hard to live with, and I wanted to say to any and all people looking for answers and comfort, that I understand.

I understand how hard it is to get moving some days.. to just get out of bed, some days.. to stay positive when the pain sucks the life right out of you.. I know HOW DEEP you have to dig emotionally, to keep pressing forward despite medications that don't work, doctor's who don't listen, and the constant struggle of trying to regain a normal life.
I! UNDERSTAND!!!!

I wish I had something to offer in regards to remedies that help.. I have yet to find anything that really works without debilatating side effects.. Just know my heart and prayers go out to us all. And while I cant offer more, every single one of you, is in my thoughts.

Thank you for your stories and courage. They helped me to push through another day.

Namaste..

Carey

I was diagnosed with RA 3 months ago. My pain is in almost all joints - jaw, arms, hip, and both legs. I have muscle cramps at night keeping me awake. My issue is that I can NOT have NSAIDS and am allergic to all OPIATE pain meds. So I am stuck with not being able to take anti-inflammatory drugs as well as pain medicine to help me get through exercising. I have had two knee and left ankle surgeries. I take a 650mg Tylenol for pain. I have tried green smoothies and eating raw foods - nothing seems to help and the swelling still is getting worse. I have tried Sulfersalazine and could not tolerate it, I am now have started Methotrexate at 15mg. I have only been on it for 3 weeks so no effects yet. I would like any and all help that anyone could give me - I am at a loss and am tired of not being able to move - life has really been hindered because of this.

I have had rheumotoid arthritis since I was 23 years old. The pain started in my left wrist and started trsveling to my right shoulder; and then to my knees and ankles. I dismissed the pain in my shoulder and wrist.I went to my gp and he ordered a blood test. The blood test did revel that I had rheumotoid arthritis.
I do see a rheumotologist and after trying so many different types of medication; I am now taking methotrexate and embrel. These two drugs seem to help with the pain. I haven't had a flare up in a long time. And, I do excercise on a daily basis.
I do enjoy the Arthritis Today magazine. I read it faithfully. So keep up the good work with its important information.

I was diagnosed with RA at age 15. It was horrible and life changing. I felt broken and angry that I had to deal with so much pain at such a young age. I will never again be able to brush my teeth or walk up stairs without sever pain. I am now 27 and I have one child and a hope of more. I find it hard to keep up with everyday life but I have an amazing husband who takes good care of me. My RA improved some when I had my son in 2006 so my hope is it will happen again with the next one. I have been on Methotrexate, Celebrex, Enbrel and prednisone(I call it the devil medicine because I was mean when I took it)and I wasn't sold on any of them. I have been without any meds for over 3yrs now while we have been trying for a second child with no luck. Prednisone is the only one I can take while trying to get pregnant but as I mentioned above it makes me seriously cranky and I didn't feel like myself at all. So I refuse to try it again. Methotrexate never seemed to work for me. I hate taking Enbrel because of the roller coaster ride of lots of pain/less pain. I would get sick all the time while taking it and have to go off until I got better. I also worry about the effects all these medicines have on my body along with over the counter meds like NSAIDS and Tylenol. 12 years of taking them at least 2 times a day has to have done damage. I would really like to know what types of natural remedies I can use while I am trying to get pregnant and then after I finally become pregnant. If there is any help for me please let me know.

I was diagnosed with RA and OA about 12 years ago, my sed rate was over 100. I was put on Methotrexate and Prednisone. I was later diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and then a herneated disc in my back. I was eventually put on Embril which was amazing for about a year and a half but then reached it's peak and since there is only one dose size, I had to move on to Remicade. I was on it for several years but never got the results I had with Embril. I have now switched to Orencia and it is just kicking in in month 3 and is doing well. The herneated disc in my back became so severe I ended up in a wheelchair. I was taking injections every 3 months to try to ease the pain, all the time being told I would have to have surgery. My Rheumotologist sent me to a rehab doctor who didn't do surgery, he just rehabs backs. He sent me to a physical therapist. I now have NO pain in my back. The PT massaged my back and spine, using his thumbs to force the offending disc away from the spinal column. I woke up one morning, prayed as usual, for the ability to make it through the day, stood up and there was no pain. That was over 3 years ago. There is hope.

Well back in 2009 i saw a rheumatologist that said that i ad seronegative inflammatory arthritis (RA) and put me on prednisone at first then i went to methotrexate. Well from there it got worse, i kept getting infections, sinus infections, H1N1, then pneumonia and finally pulled off the methotrexate.(2010) I have since been diagnosed with a ILD (lung disease) which the don't know the underlying reasons for this as i didn't smoke and or drink. But I do know now that RA can attack other organs of your body. (had no clue). So since this diagnoses this years 3 hospitalizations, a lung biopsy, colonoscopy, etc i am still in pain crippling hand and foot pain to the point that i can't use them. I would like to add that i am going to the best of the best National Jewish which is world wide recommended. They started me on Enbrel 2 weeks ago and that has made a world of difference for my hand and feet pain. All of my RA labs keep coming back negative but we are sure its because of the prednisone and the other medications that i am on to keep my lungs open and breathing.

My whole life has changed this year. I haven't been able to work since the first of the year and now i have tremors. The rheumatologist at Ntl Jewish said that he had not seen anyone with the tremors as bad as mine in the 10 years he's been practicing there. So now i am on another medication to help with the tremors.

i am ready for my life to come back to some normalization as much as possible. I know i will have to use oxygen the rest of my life but i can live with that.

To all those having to deal with these sorts of things my best advice is to stay positive. Positive results bring positive results and makes it so much easier to deal with things in life.

I was diagnosed with RA in March 2009. I had symtoms prior to 2009 but was never properly diagnosed by multiple doctors & hospitals. I found a great RA doctor and he has helped me through a lot of pain. I haven't had much luck with a lot of the drugs for RA. I'm currently using Cimzia along with Methotrexate. The first six months, I appeared to be improving, but I've noticed in the past couple of months that Cimzia isn't working as well as it used to. I've grown nodules on both elbows, a few fingers and now my right wrist. I'm feeling very depressed lately as I really want to be in a remission at some point. I miss being active and working. I'm really tired of being tired all the time and vicodin helps with pain but knocks me out. Thanks for listening, I'm having a bad day.

I found a product that increases your body's natural ability to repair and replenish itself through "reactive molecules". What does that mean? For me, it means I have no more pain from arthritis or old injuries, my energy levels have... increased, my muscles recover faster after riding or working out, and I need less sleep!

Here's the product www.myasea.com/toddklimson

I was first diagnosed with RA, later was told it was not RA but fibromyalgia. I have pinched nerves, carpal tunnel, syntosis in both arms from my thumb on up my arm. I found out I was allergic to Celebrex after being on it for many years. I was allergic to 4 of the 6 ingredients in it. They are listed on the last line of their webpage. I am still taking Cymbalta, Alpha Lipoic Acid, Metanx and Fish oil capsules among other things. These help greatly with the pain.

It is helpful to me to see that I am not as bad off as some, but I feel for those that are worse off, because I have been there! I am now retired from nursing, but I went thru bilateral knee replacements---yes, both at once---and returned to work, but also had back pain for years, figuring it went along with the years of being on my feet. I was diagnosed, after chemo for the third time for breast cancer, with carpel tunnel and had surgery for that, then found I had lost a fingertip joint on my dominant hand and was diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis, losing all but two fingertip joints before the Methotrexate slowed down the progression. Had thumb fusions and other hand CMC joint (base of thumb) reconstruction with tendon, after the joint was destroyed. So of course, I was forced to retire. Soon after, I tried the stretching/rack-type therapy, which did not help my back or leg pain. Then more PT and pain therapy doc did multiple injections and radio therapy, which did nothing for any length of time. His CT scan showed I'd developed scoliosis and had severe disc disease and lots of other problems with my spine, including stenosis. If I stand for too long or walk for too long, I get numbness in my right, then both legs and legs may give out. This all makes losing weight difficult and discouraging! The best thing is swimming, if I can get in & out of the pool. I don't know if I am getting used to the pain, or what, but don't need the Percocet half as much as I did. I have a TENS unit and back brace and shoe inserts, but the mornings are always bad. I was told NOT to use the heat, as it just irritates the inflammation, so I use ice pack in the AM's and when it is very bad. I agree with Biofreeze and an emu oil infused with Arnica & MSM. They help for a while, so I can get back to sleep, but not long term. I am fortunate to have been helped by the Methotrexate, but had to stop it again for chemo again, so was worried that I may lose more joints in my hands or the psoriatic arthritis may get to my hips, which are, so far, not affected! I thank God for all the good times & days of less pain, trying not to dwell on the bad.

I have had Rheumatoid Arthritis since I was 21. I am now 28 and let me tell you, its been a rollercoaster of pain. It started off with tendonitis in my left knee, then carpal tunnel in my hands. It got so swollen that not even pain meds helped. Vicodin, percocet...then a doctor tested me for the rheumatoid factor in my blood. It was positive, my whole world changed. I was in denial at first. Didn't want to believe I had RA at 21. So many goals I needed to accomplish. I started off with Remicade and Prednisone. It really helped for the first year so, I continued working. After a year, my body no longer responded to Remicade. They then switched me to Enbrel which only worked for a few months. Followed by Humira then Orencia. By 26, I could no longer work and forced to face reality. I needed a break, my body needed a break, I can't pretend that I'm normal and do all the things normal people can. I was deep in depression. So along with Orencia, prednisone, methotrexate, there was prozac. My whole body started experiencing inflammation. I lost my voice due to the area around my voice box being so inflamed. I had to give up singing in my church band, lead singer at that. Then I started getting overall muscle pain and headaches so severe as if something was crawling inside carrying a sharp knife stabbing me at random places along with pressure as if my head was a soda bottle being shaken up and trapped, no where for the pressure to escape so it kept building up. Inflammation...of course, even in my head. My sedimentation rate was at 25. The cutoff normal range is 6 so u can only imagine the pain I endured. I couldn't walk for months, no social life, misery and pain my unwanted friends. And then my vision got really bad excruciating pain in my eyes. What do u know, inflammation. I couldn't wear contacts for months tolerated with glasses that got me so dizzy cuz I'm nearly blind so I can only see straight thru the lens. Nothing above, on my sides, nor below. So came migraines n now I'm spending my days puking half the time. The up side? Lost weight, less pressure on my knees. Had already stopped Prednisone cuz drs speculate it could've contribute to my headaches. Then in 2009 they introduced me to Sulfalasazine, Rituxan and Cymbalta for my Fibromyalgia diagnosed in '07. It works wonders! An infusion once every 6 months, a 5hr process and once I'm off the hospital bed, I can walk perfectly! Its a miracle! I do still have pain in between shots but it only last for a day or two. I manage the pain with vicodin and Flexiral. So at least half my week I am closest to normal! I hope those of you whose body do not respond to current medication can as your Rheumatologist about Rituzan. Its orinally a cancer medication but just in the last few years have been found to be very beneficial for people with RA. Best wishes to all!

I recommend you get a Thermophore a special type heating pad which just works wonders to relax tensed up muscles. For back pain find a pain clinic. There are things that can help neck and back pain. Get a hot tub, or soak in your own tub. Don't use public ones if you are a woman. Eventually you will pick up some vagina thing and regret it. Try Lidoderm patches they are a prescription patch to put on the painful areas--expensive but worth it.
Get diclofenac gel from a Canadian pharmacy without prescription or from your doctor by prescription. Rub it on the sore spot to take away pain. And be sure you take short rests when you can during the day. I have had arthritis, fibromyalgia and myofacial pain syndrome for 20 years and all these things help at one time or another. Good luck, understanding people around you help too!

To: W R White or any else that has cramping....Purchase Bio-Freeze, it comes in a lotion or roll-on, I prefer the roll-on, then I don't have to wash my hands after I use it...it is for arthritis pain, but I use it when I get a sudden cramp and it takes the cramp away within minutes...you can purchase it a some drug stores, or health stores, my Chiropractor sells it in his office for $10. It is wonderful.

Michael, I'm so glad you found scubadiving as a relief for pain!! To find a reprieve is so wonderful. I have severe OA in my jaw, neck, back, hips..also some pain in knees and recentlyhands and feet getting worse. I'm seeing a rheumotolgist tomorrow...3 hrs from where we live, not easy. Best for me has been massage, exercises and diet-I'm trying the mediterranean diet suppose to be good for reducing inflammation in teh body, recommended by an orthopedic surgeon. Wht has been most challenging is meds and supplements(except fish oil), don't work or cause side effects. Also physical therapy been a disappointment-started seeing p.t. 6 yrs ago, arthritis in neck and mid back then, they are the most dismissive and unsupervised group of people...my arthritis has more than doubled under their care cuz they wouldn't listen and kept missing things. I'm on my fourth p.t. now who is doing a better job, she got my hips and legs stronger and more stable than anyone so maybe my back will improve now. I can only hope, I'm 51 and have been on a negative spiral for 8 yrs now-can it be reversed??

Linda (comment of 6-1-10), I have many of the same problems you have so I can sympathize thoroughly. (RA, PsA, psoriasis, OA) I even went so far as to see an orthopedic doc for surgery. I had had enough of the injections, pills, etc., that I was at the end of my rope. Along with herniated disks, I have damaged nerves in my spine. My ortho-doc said he would be the only one who would benefit from surgery, because within six months, I would be back to being in pain everyday, but at least he would have been paid! I was extremely glad he was honest enough to say that. Finally, my RA doc started me on Remacaid along with my methotrexate. I still have quite a lot of pain, but it is better. My heart goes out to you and I hope you can keep up good spirits because life is worth living, even with pain. Read a lot of Snoopy and Peanuts everyday for a good laugh. My love to you.

i really enjoyed reading the things others had written. i am 63 and have had back trouble for some time now, but it was manageable. this past month i had intence pain that shot down my leg to my foot. went to the ER, they took MRI and i have a Herniated Disk. have been doing PT now for 3 weeks. this helps, but only for a time. do excersise at home also, plus take my meds. Mornings are really hard cause everything hurts and is stiff. once i get going i am somewhat better. the Dr. said i would need back sugery and i was wondering if it is worth it. i guess i am afrid of being totally immobil because of something that might happen during surgery. any feed back on this? thanks

Hello, I am 48 yo and have had psoriatic arthritis (hands, elbows, knees, feet) since 1987. I have been taking Enbrel once a week (50mg) since 2000.
I have recently started scuba diving and what a wonder. Even on a bad day, like this Saturday when my joints were really hurting after 3 weeks w/out meds due to an infection, I get in the (cold - 52F) water and the pain is gone. Nothing hurts. Being in the water, weightless, floating with the current. It is so cool. I now try to dive at least once a week and the effect is always the same and usually lasts until I go to sleep at night.
Just wanted to share that :-)

I am 25 years old and i suffer with psoriatic arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, i have it in both feet, both knees, both hands, both wrists all my back and both shoulders. I am in alot of pain. I have tried taking sulfasalazine which did not work, i have then been moved on to gold injections, these took a bit of the pain away, but made my breathing very bad. I just dont seem to be able to find anything that works. And waiting for the NHS is a waste of time, im more likly to win the lottery.

I sometimes have leg cramps and finger cramps so bed, I can't sleep and cry myself to sleep to escape the pain. Many a time I have sat on the side of the bathtub and and run very warm water over my legs as I massage them to make the pain go away. I have RA also for the last 5 years and take methotraxate.

A friend recently shared with me that she uses "Restful Legs" by Hylands. I have found that within 5 to 15 minutes after I put two of the quick-dissolving pills under my tongue, I get relief at least for hours, sometimes for days.

I don't know what's in these pills but I am glad my friend told me about them.

I hope to subscribe to Arthritis Today soon.

Hello to all.
I'm new here and new in having Osteoarthritis....diagnosed just 6 mths ago. After doing a great deal of reading/research I've come to the following conclusion to help with the pain and live as normal a life as possible...here are the important things:
1. Eat Healthy [lose weight as needed]
2. Don't smoke
3. Enroll in a water therapy class [your local YWCA/YMCA] or create your own water therapy in the bathtub for warm soaks and gentle stretching exercises. A little meditation while soaking also truly helps.
4. Follow closely what your doctor[s] prescribe in pain meds and/or NSAIDs.
I hope this helps someone.

I have spent some time this morning reading of pain and remedy's. My heart goes out to those suffering. Injury at 9yrs. old began a lifetime of back pain. Arthritis in my 30's added a new dimension to the word pain. Pain can be such a depressant. I am 67 years old. I continue to work 3 days a wk. in bio-tec with women 1/2 my age. They help me stay young. My husband & I have been married 48 yrs. We have a ranch. My role in the care of livestock, gardens and all the things I love has decreased due to arthritis. I continue to stay active at the level that is sensible for me. Our grandchildren take my mind off pain. Reading, painting, studying bird species in our yard - anything to take my mind off pain. THE MIND CAN ONLY THINK OF ONE THING AT A TIME. I refuse to let my crippled hands and various other physical problems stop me living while I'm alive. Support groups are helpful for some folks. We must stay active in mind and body, no matter how limited. I pray for an answer for all those suffering pain. . . .especially for children.

I was diagnosed with RA, fibromyalgia, and sjogren's last year. for lent last year I gave up my daily coke and chocolate and my symptoms went away within 4 days. After lent i slowly went back to my chocolate and coke and my symptoms slowly came back. I also saw a holistic Doc who tole me I had a metal build up in my body and persribed N=Acetyl -L-Cysteine and I don't use a deodrant with aluminum in it and I feel really good!
Basically, I am not eating much processed foof. Try this! I want to share this with everyone because it can't hurt.

i have been suffering from lupus since last five years which means severe pain and inflammation in all joints. Im on drugs since then, but i remember just because of my motivation a time came when i used run 3 kilometers in 14 minutes. What i understood of all types of arthritus is never GIVE UP and OMEGA 3 CAPSULES, busy routine , hot bath before starting the day and before sleep, good meals and own intrest of work will reduce the pain. keep stickin to bed, long sittings on office chairs will liable to increase the pain. i still donot know much about type of exercize would be better for me, so i will be obliged if somebody can mke me more wise or send me exercizes

I was told at 28 that I had oa. I have had surgeries on both my thumbs and wrists. It worked well for 44 years; no long term pain after either. I also have had 11 back surgeries and am facing more surgery to tear out all the rods and go completely up my back. I was in a wreck in 2005 which snapped my old lower rods. No one wants to attempt the job. I also have been diagnosed with ra and os. I need two foot surgeries, two knee surgeries, besides my back and both hands. But thank God for Enbrel injections and metho. injection. At 63, I am still walking with the Grace of GOd. Not far, but I am still on 2 feet with a cane.Pain is never ceasing. But I also had gastric bypass and lost 100 lbs. which my RA Dr and 5 other doctors said if I did not have I would die within the year. Been almost 5 years. That was a great help. I use a scooter for my long trips out shopping, but the most important thing is AQUATIC EXERCISE! Enjoy the water. I joined the local YMCA and they created an arthritis class for me and soon many others joined. We each have our own story, each with our own pains and tramors - but trust you are not alone. That is my motto. God never puts more on a person than one can bear. Others who do not have our diseases, do not understand and especially - the stress from others. God Bless.

I am 38 years old suffering from Fibromyalgia and Rheumatoid Arthritis. It took many different doctors to finally diagnose me as having both illnesses. While I was being treated for the Fibromyalgia I still experienced joint pain all over my body. I work fulltime and dread the day I have to say I can't do this anymore. I fear going on disability and fear the doctors may not agree in my favor due to my age. One thing I have learned during the portion of my life is don't let the small stuff get you it take to much energy that you need to go on.

I have osteoarthritis in both my hands - have lose some mobility in my right hand. They say to wear 2 different types of braces and be careful what I do and that everything I do is more wear and tear on my bones. X-ray shows fragments of bones from my thumb area just floating. I am on cellebrex 2 x a day. Disability may be an option. Meanwhile, I am to think "creatively" for some type of work to do besides "working" so hard. My body hurts and my mind is tired. Perhaps we as Arthritis sufferers should come up with a new type of work - just for us! Meanwhile, it will be a hot bath tonight for me.

I have both ra and oa for past 10 years. If you are having joint pian see a rhumatologist. Here are some tips I have learned to deal with pian. If your back hurts try getting the tens. It gives little electrical currents that block the tranmission of pain. For hand pain,In the morning fill a sink with hot water and keep your hands in while moving fingers till you get pain relief. In bed position your body with pillow support. In cold damp weather sleep with an electric blanket.Let me know if this helps someone I will check back in a week.I am a nurse and I am preparing for my second knee replacement.good luck.

I use only natural therapies and for few days now when my legs are hurting I have been reading about therapies for artritis.

There is quite a lot.
glucosamine-chondroitin-msm
BOSWELIA
devil's claw
turmeric
ginger

for pain use topically 6-10 drops of WILD OREGANO OIL mixed with 1 tbsp of "normal" (usually olive) cooking oil

some people swear by DMSO-DIMETHYLSULFOXIDE.

Good luck to all!

i have RA for the past 11 years.
i'm 44 years old now and i'm always in constant pain. i've taken Enbrel, Prednisone metrotraxte, and many different pain pills and nothing seems to work. these medications seem like just putting a bandage on a scrape. i used to have at least 15 good days a month without pain and now it seems it less than that. any suggestions.

lyprinol I have been taking for the last week after coming across it on "Kiwi drug". I have very sore muscles every time after I walk the dog, or even go for a light run. It's very heartbreaking because I love to be outdoors and not sitting on my sofa. Anyways Lyprinol is great for helping me keep my life balanced.

I have been using a satin sheet as a bottom sheet for several years now, a regular sheet on top because with a satin sheet on top the blanket slipped off the bed. This really helps me turn over in the bed and I also wear satin pjs. I love this magazine.

I have felt bad for years and Dr's couldn't tell me anything. I was so frustrated and felt like it was all in my head. But I ached. Now I have constant pain not aching, but pain.right ankle, both knees, hips, back, left shoulder and wrists. I am so tired all the time and feel like I have the flu constantly. My Dr has me taking naproxen twice a day and prednisone bursts when the pain gets really bad. I only feel normal when taking the prednisone as soon as the burst is done the pain returns in a day or two. My dr. says it is an unrealistic expectation I have to feel good all the time. I want to at least feel good 50% of the time. Iam a nursing superdisor with a stressful job and I have to work. What would help? What med is the most helpful?

At the age of 32 I was dignosed with DJD in both knees. After my initial scope, the Dr. said my knee actually both of them were like that of a 70 year old. All the cartilage between my patella and both femur and tibia was gone. Very painfull situation I endured for a long time due to my work and family life.I had a double patellectomy over the next 2 years. Now I am 46 and I have started with more problems again, mainly in the worst knee. Almost all of the cartilage between my femur and tibia is gone.
I am now going to start taking the rooster comb injections to lubricate what is left of the cartilage. I hope it works. I am too young to be having a total knee, which my doc says will probably be inevitable at some point. Anyone else out there having these injections with satisfactory results?
Just wondering.
Thanks.

I am 39 years old and the date is 5-30-09, my grandma had RA and I had no idea how much pain she was in, she was just a petit woman and here knee would swell up like a basket ball. The Drs. try to help but only for a bit, the worst is when I am sleeping when I first lay down to rest or go to sleep I can feel how sore my legs and feet are while I am sleeping I hurt to even move and lay in my other side and it hurts really bad stiff and sore. No one will ever know how it feels to have that I did not I was Diagnosed in 2004 and then it went a way then come back. The only way I can describe to someone how bad it feels is that back in 1997 I was in a fight with 4 others guys and the pain that I endured was not even close to how I feel now with having RA. The drugs I take help and them even make you feel like you have the flue all the time and it’s the same medication the some Patience are treated with for cancer. I seen signs of having RA but did not think too much about it because of the kind of work I did, I was a fence contractor, but I look back now and I’ve see when I had had it. Its a very much so Disability like some one being in a Car Accident and can not walk again but people do not think of it, I work every day and I have to and its not because of bills that I have is long I keep moving I stay sore but If I stop I hurt bad when I go start moving around again. Believe it or not this stuff is really bad - It should be nicked named Sleeping with the enemy because While you sleep its like Riga mortise has already set in, I would just like to function normally, I know this what I am writing sounds like am whining but its all true, I use to love Scuba Diving and Riding Motorcycles and other activities, but now everyday I feel like I have to overcome and Obstacle to go and enjoy life and it seems like a death sentence!

I have been in pain for years and it continues to worsen to the point that I am now in constant pain. I am afraid of NSAIDS due to side effects and take them only occasionally. My doctor suggests Enbrel but again I am afraid of the side effects, in particular having my immune system weakened...I work with small children. Some days I am in tears at work due to the pain but have no alternative. I am so exhausted by the time I get home that I can barely keep my eyes open let alone go to a gym. What options do I have to receive some sort of partial disability to do what I need to do and get through the day easier.

Hello, I am type 1 diabetic and have some form of arthiritis, i was wondering if fish oil or flaxseed is better to take in helping with the Ra pain. I was also wanting to know if I can still play softball? I run a league and really want to still play. Will exercise help the pain go away or will it make it worse?

Thanks

Hello-I went to the aqua water class today. It was great. I left early-50 minutes was great for me. I went to the sauna and the hot tub. It got me rejuvinated for the day. I had a nap today. Naps are good! Tomorrow I go to the doctor for a cortisone shot in my left lower leg. I have had arthritis all my 66 years. It is O.K. I take my medicine regularly-half hour before the pain starts. I love the Arthritis Today magazine. Keep up the good work. Love the stories.
