Why Skipping Medications Is a Bad Idea

Consistency Counts

Your prescription says, “Take once daily at the same time each day.” But the drug is expensive and sometimes upsets your stomach – and you’re feeling pretty good today. Do you really need to take it? Would it be okay to miss a day or two? The answer, says Lars Osterberg, MD, is to go ahead and take your prescribed medication doses. You may be feeling okay now, but skipping medication may set you up for bigger problems later.

If you’re taking medicine for chronic pain, for example, skipping medication can make pain harder to treat, says Osterberg, a clinical assistant professor of medicine at the Stanford School of Medicine and an expert in patient medication compliance. NSAIDS and analgesics, for example, are used as much for prevention as treatment. “When pain flares, it’s hard to knock it down again,” he says. “The same goes for inflammation. If you get behind the eight ball and inflammation builds up, it can be hard to suppress that inflammation and pain.”

To work best, some drugs need to remain at therapeutic levels – often over long periods of time – in the bloodstream. Taking them consistently is the best way to ensure that, says Dr. Osterberg. Taking a DMARD or biologic agent only on occasion does nothing. Missing medication doses causes blood levels of the drugs to plummet and can allow dangerous disease flares to occur.

If you are tempted into skipping medication because of side effects, ask your doctor about ways to minimize them, perhaps by taking the medicine with food or adjusting the medication dosage or time of dosage. If cost is a problem, see if you qualify for assistance. The Partnership for Prescription Assistance (www.pparx.org or 888/477-2669) provides information on more than 475 public and private assistance programs. Also, ask your doctor about switching to a generic or other less expensive medication. Even a less effective drug, taken regularly, may work better than the best drug taken hit or miss.

I have a hard time trying to understand when its time to stop what im doing. then im so tired i cant even cook a dinner for my family. I'm use to working 8-10 hrs a day, now I am lucky to be able to clean the whole house.I waited a long time before going to the DR for the pain, and being so tired all the time. Now I;m on 3 differnt meds for the RA and a strong pain med.But my RA factor just keeps going up. I have yet to find a DR who is willing to understand I dont want to use the cortazone shots. The last one statrted leaveing me in a room for hrs before comeing in, She seemed upset because i still would'nt let her use it.RA csn be passed down thru family,as in my case. And after talking to the ones whu have used it,i feel its not worth it.It's a bandaid that just is'nt worth the pain of takeing it.So on to more DR's to try and find a different drug that MAY help. The hardest thing is trying to understand why i cant do the same things I've always done.I had lost my faith in DRs yrs ago, had'nt seen one in 25yrs.Untill the joints started to swell to the point I thought i would die from the pain. Now I have found a good primary and he has given me many things to try. They worked for a short time then start to stop working. so now I'm trying to find the right specialist to treat me but yet understand just how i feel about some of the treatments.Plus the cost of some of the treatments are out of my reach. So now I just live with it.I have so many pills I take everyday now, this from someone who use to not eveb take pills for headaches. I do good in the AM, but by 1-2 PM I'm wiped out.Dont know just how much more I can take
