Treating Pain With Exercise

Exercise makes you feel better – and it might just be your next prescription for pain.

When your doctor hands you a prescription for an anti-inflammatory drug or pain reliever, you dutifully take it to the pharmacy to be filled. Why wouldn’t you? The medication will likely make you feel better.

But when your doctor tells you exercising regularly will make you feel better too, that it will make your joints more limber, that it can help you sleep better at night, feel better all day and, specifically, that it will help ease your arthritis pain – what action do you take? Do you willingly stop at a gym on your way home and sign up for three classes per week? Do you drop by the mall and pick up a new pair of walking shoes? Or do you go home and continue life as usual?

Doctors are looking to be more persuasive when they recommend exercise, so they are pulling out their prescription pads. A fitness prescription gives you directions for the activities you need to perform, how long and intensely to do them and how to progress to the next level.

The trend was kick-started by a study of how rheumatologists communicate with their patients about exercise, and how that communications influences the patient’s exercise behavior. Researchers found that talking about exercise was four times more likely to happen if the doctor started the discussion. And doctors who initiated the exercise discussion were four times more likely to give the patient a referral to a physical therapist or an exercise program.

So at your next visit, don’t be surprised if the doctors hands you a prescription for a workout. If you don’t get one, first ask your doctor if it’s OK for you to start an exercise program, then ask for a list of specific exercises you should do.

I was diagnosed with osteoarthritis in my spine.Jeez I have pain ALL the time it is unbearable! I would like to excercise but it seems like I can't find the strength to begin.

I HAVE VERY BAD ARTHRITIS in my fingers have the nodes on the end of my finger tips in fact of every finger have trouble tsking medication which always affects my stomache, what exercises coukd I do for my fingers to relieve the servere pain?

Gail is very right! Physical Therapists can help you both with the pain/issues you described. Physical Therapists are actually Doctors to; it is a specific field of allied health (like a chiropractor or optometrist or dentist)except they specifically study which exercises are most beneficial and safe for every illness. Many states are direct access, meaning you do not need a Physician script to see one. Physical Therapists are more than qualified to diagnoses a treat a variety of ailments including all forms of arthritis. Like any health profession, their are definitely better individuals practicing than others, so make sure you do your research and find the best in your area! Hope this helps :)

It's great to see support for "exercise is medicine". When it comes to the correct exercise for a diagnosis, or mobility problem, see a physical therapist. They are the experts at prescribing the specific exercises that will correct the problem, and still be safe for any other medical issues you may have. Most insurance companies will cover PT when prescribed by a physician.

I had acute arthritis and had to have a "hip replacement" in 2008! About 10 months later
after recovering very well from the hip replacement, I developed spinal stenosis/bulging discs. After having to take vicodin for pain, I was diagnosed with a blood clot on my lung. Now I'm taking coumadin and vicodin. My pain has been radiating to my left hip and down my left leg! Isn't there some kind of relief somewhere on this earth, wherein I can get relieft from my spinal stenosis/bulging discs?

I have fairly significant osteoarthritis in my hands/fingers and wondered what forms of exercise I could do for them?
