Eating for Energy

When you’re fighting chronic pain, depression and too little sleep, you need easy ways to boost your energy. Start with how – and what – you’re eating.

By Sean Kelley

There are many reasons your energy may flag throughout the day: medication side effects, pain that wears you out, depression, poor sleep from the night before and even inactivity. But you may be surprised to learn that some of your eating habits can sap your energy, too. Get on the right track with these smart eating tips for an energy boost.

Don't Go Hungry: The body needs energy to expend energy. That's why when you skip meals, or wait too long to eat, you can feel unfocused or lethargic.

"When you skip, you're simply not fueling your body enough," says Lona Sandon, assistant professor of clinical nutrition at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. Plus, she adds, “when you're hungry, you get irritated and that can exacerbate fatigue."

Eat Breakfast: People who eat breakfast tend to eat healthier. In one large study published in 2008 in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, researchers found that breakfast eaters tend to eat healthier meals and fewer calories over the course of a day. Women in the study who ate breakfast weighed less.

Pass on the sweet stuff: Sugary cereals, sweet pastries and high-calorie coffees will give you a quick jolt of energy, but at a cost. The sugar burns off quickly, leaving you lethargic, says Thomas Namey, MD, a rheumatologist and professor of medicine at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.

"Simple carbohydrates can cause a tremendous up-shoot in serum insulin," Dr. Namey says. "The rapidly falling blood sugar contributes to a down swoop energy and burn out."

I used a few tricks I learned to healthy eating due to hyperglycemia that occurred only when I was pregnant. First: eat several small meals a day. A snack of one apple at 10 a.m. refreshes and picks me up as much as a cup of coffee. Second: replace the soda, even diet soda - the sodium in it causes the body to store extra water & makes you more thirsty, with a vitamin water drink or just plain cold water. Third: reward yourself. I like sweets also, and where I work you can not walk into and office without a bowl of candy on a desk. So, I respond in two ways to this urge - keep only hard candy that I don't particularly care about in my own office, and about 4 p.m if I haven't indulged a temptation, I reward myself with a small hand full of M&Ms from the office at the other end of the building.

I am a coco cola finatic . I have to have a coke from the time I have finished my coffee around 11:00 everyday . No kidding , if I don't have some kind of caffeine from in the morning until the end of the day , I feel like I am going through a major withdrawl . I am going to try and lose some weight before the holidays are over . I just lost my mother two weeks ago , due to arthritus and cancer . So , I want to get more healthy for my children and myself . I got up this morning and had around 3 cups of coffee compared to an entire pot like I usually have . I had a half of a blueberry baguel with strawberry cream cheese on it . Then I just ate a chicken salad on a croussant with lettuce and tomatoe along with a cup of yogurt with strawberries . My goal is to lose 50 pounds !!!! I can do it too !!! I know I can !!!! Good Luck to everyone here !!! Merry Christmas and Happy New Lean Year's Day !!!!

I am hypoglysemic and breakfast is 1-2 eggs with spinach, tomato juice and 2 pieces of turkey bacon. Lunch is healthy with salad, fish or poultry and green tea. Dinner is protein, vegetables and salad. I have energy and have learned to stop and have a glass of water and at least 15 minutes of rest. Yogart or cheese is taken in between meals. Try to engage in reading and hobbies to keep a happy life. Also do for others as you will feel rewarded.
