Arthritis and Diseases that Affect the Knee

Virtually any form of arthritis can affect the knee, and cause pain and swelling. These include:

Osteoarthritis. The most common form of arthritis, osteoarthritis is a chronic condition characterized by the breakdown of the cartilage that cushions the ends of the bones where they meet to form joints. The breakdown of cartilage causes the bones to rub against each other, causing stiffness, pain and loss of movement in the joint. The knee is one of the joints most commonly affected by osteoarthritis.

Rheumatoid arthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic inflammatory disease of the joints which occurs when body’s immune system – which normally protects us from infection – mistakenly attacks the synovium, the thin membrane that lines the joints. The result can be joint damage, pain, swelling, inflammation, loss of function and disability. In addition to the knees, rheumatoid arthritis, commonly affects the hands, wrists, feet, elbows and ankles.

Juvenile arthritis. Juvenile arthritis is the term used to describe arthritis when it begins at age 16 or before. There are several different types of juvenile arthritis, including juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) and juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). Many can cause pain and swelling of the knee.

I had a torn Meniscus and had surgery on June 1, 2011. Ever since then I have had knee pain. The more I walk the more it hurts and now my other knee is hurting. I can no longer squat because it hurts both of my knees so much. I am wondering if what I have is arthritis or what. A friend of mine had the same thing and she ended up having to have both knees replaced. My surgeon told me that I have a damaged ACL, but that he doesn't recommend surgery on someone over 50 years of age. What am I suppose to do??????

Had MRI, shows arthritis dr said. Pain comes and goes, I can be completely still and all of a sudden feels like someone is putting a hot sharp pick in my knee and twisting it. Then other times no pain at all. I have not found much relief with OTC pain meds. I do feel better when I walk about, I have wondered if my back has something to do with the pain. It sometimes goes down my chin below knee in dull pain. I know that a "tens" unit does not work, it just made it more painful. Why do I have pain with not moving, just lying in bed or sitting in a chair?

Went to the doctor in July for a knee issue.
They took xrays and determined that my knee cap was out of line. They pretty much didn't do anything more. I now have an issue with both knees. I take naproxin for pain and wear supports when I go to work, I have to climb alot of stairs. If I have to get up from a sitting position or climb stairs I am in pain. I am in fear that some day that I will sit on a toilet and not be able to get up. I am 56 years old and am probably about 50 lbs overweight, I know that this is an issue in it's self. I'm working on that. Any suggestions?

No one ever talks about preventative measures to minimize the development of osteoarthritis, or is it inevitable with age?
