Exercises to Strengthen the Hip and Relieve Pain

Exercise is one of the best things you can do to help your hips. Exercise helps maintain range of motion and strengthens the muscles that support your hips. Stretching the muscles and tendons that surround the joint also can help ease pain from some hip problems and reduce the risk of some injuries.

I suffer from RA, Osterarthritis and fibromyalgia. I recently had an MRI of my lower spin and found that I have degenerative disc disease and 50% detoriation of discs and some facets that cause my left hip to dislocate every day. I am always at the chiropractors office having either my hip adjusted or the sacrum. What exercises can I do to help improve my hips and lower back. Thank you and have a wonderful day.

I am a fitness instructor and have been for the past 20 years. I teach all kinds of classes, but since my arthritic hip I mainly teach water and spinning classes. The exercise may help people who have not been active, but since I've done this for so long, it does not alleivate or relive my pain, it makes it worse. So much for this!

JoAnn, Do you have an accurate diagnosis? That can make all of the difference in the world. Would you be willing to try a good chiropractor who knows soft tissue work. That can be very helpful if the muscles are involved.

I have been having moderate to severe pain in my right hip and back mostly. I was going to Physical Therapy to try to alleviate the pain and learn new exercises to take the stiffness and maybe the pain out, however there were times I went and felt better and then those times I felt worse after exercising. I don't know whether the exercise was hurting it really or would I have gotten past the pain eventually and should I continue the physical therapy?
