Back Injury

Back pain is often the result of injuries, which may be acute or occur over time. They include:

• Sprains. When ligaments in the back are torn, usually from a sudden injury, the result can be pain. The pain of a sprain can be severe, localized to one spot in the back or more generalized all of your back and in nearby areas of the body.

• Spasms. Sometimes overworked muscles of the back (and elsewhere) go into spasm – painful, involuntary contraction, similar to a charley horse (a cramp, usually occurring in the calf muscle). While spasms are painful, they are the body's way of protecting itself from the underlying problem. When muscles are in spasm, they become painful and rigid, so that you are temporarily unable to use or damage them further.

• Ruptured or herniated discs.  When discs are weakened, the hard outer covering can rupture, allowing the squishy center to bulge out causing pressure and irritation to nearby nerves.

Learn about herniated discs and their treatment from the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

• Vertebral fractures. Fractures of the vertebra may be caused by a trauma, but more often are the result of osteoporosis, which weakens the vertebrae and causes them to crumble. These are called compression fractures.

Sue,
You mention you see a pain Doctor?
Maybe thats who I need to go see.
I have x-rays of my whole back on cd. From the pelvic to my neck. My doctor says it is arthritis in my lower/middle/neck.
He says there is no surgery to help me.
I am 42 yrs. old and my first lower back injury was 21 yrs. ago. I am now taking 800mg of Ibuprofen when in pain. There are times I can't hardly get out of bed in the morning. My pain is a ten when I hurt that bad. I take the maximum dose of generic xanax 2mg three times a day for having a nervous break down at the age of 33.
I don't want to stay on 800mg of Ibuprofen.
I have seen first hand what that does to friends of mine. Ulcers and messes up there stomach and liver. My doctor tried 50mg of Tramadol for my back and another pain medicine without success. I expressed my concern to him about too much Ibuprofen.
He won't prescribe me Vicodine. I don't know if Vicodine is an addictive drug or not.
I am thinking about seeing a Neurologist.
If anyone has any suggestions, I'm all ears.

Hi there~ I am a 42y/o female, yes overweight and frustrated because my body and my mind are not in synch. I did fall and injure my back 7 years ago. I worked in a physically demanding job (firefighter/paramedic)until the day my body just quit tolerating it. I am pretty stubborn, so with many rounds of therapy, medications, Tens Units, exercise regimes.. I was able to push thru. When the day came that I could not roll over in bed, lift my legs, sit up...I had no choice, I was no longer able to fool myself. I have a variety of stuff going on since it has been ongoing (herniation in L3,L4, subsequent inflammation which frequesntly causes nerve impingement, they say I've developed arthritic SI and Facet Joints, and my neck joints are becoming arthritic related to my uneven gait. My left achilles has become extremely tight (right back muscles remain tense). I limp or waddle like and old woman most of the time, yet I am try to remain active with our kids and the Awana group I lead at church. I have had SI and Facet injections many times, taken NSAIDS, I take Baclofen now, Lexapro, Lidoderm patches, and I have Darvocet for when I just can't tolerate it. I do not like pain meds, they work on your brain..not your pain...any suggestions? My pain mngmnt doc that I love is out due to some family medical issue...and I really don't want to see anyone else. With God All things are possible!!! Some day He will come back and those who trust in Him shall be given a new body with no pain!!!
