What's Your Weight Loss Personality?

Trying to decide which weight-loss program is best for you may depend on your weight-loss personality and needs.

If you need social support, try Take Off Pounds Sensibly (TOPS), which has been supporting people trying to lose weight since 1948. Visit TOPS Web site to see if there’s a meeting near you.

If you need to fix a food addiction, try Overeaters Anonymous, which uses the Twelve Steps associated with Alcoholics Anonymous to help with the physical and emotional issues that may be behind compulsive overeating. No dues or fees. Vist the Overeaters Anonmymous Web site to find a meeting.

If you need flexibility, try Weight Watchers, which has been providing weight loss program support, tips and recipes for more than 40 years.

If you cook for one, be a regular at your grocery store’s salad bar or try Healthy Choice or Lean Cuisine meals, which are nutritionally sound and make sure you won’t overeat.

If you’re always on the go, try meal-replacement drinks like Slim-Fast or prepackaged meal plans like Jenny Craig or Nutri/System  to help ensure you have a balanced meal, not a fast-food feeding frenzy.

If you’re a do-it-yourselfer, go to www.mypyramid.gov and get the number of calories you need per day and the amount of food you need from each group on a daily basis. Then you can take control of choices. Tracking forms are available online. The service, offered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, is free.

annamaria,
try to get to a pain management clinic and omit the steroids. steriods make u gain weight, cause bone loss, and can make u a diabetic. I have OA since i was 15. i'm 54 now. this is my worse year but still no steroids. there are so many other ways to help us now. You don't have to suffer. Stay busy around the house, putter, learn what makes it worse. Washing dishes helps your hands. I've boughten utensils with larger handles. My legs are the worse because of my back. I don't mop. Hands and knees with a bucket works better. You have to figure out what will work for you but don't give up!!

I have been disabled since age 40 with degenerative disk disease and severe osteo- arthritis. Have had had multiple neck and back fusions, both knees replaced, many foot surgeries and an ankle issue. Living with severe pain, I was unable to get any enjoyment from life. After several tries, I found a pain doctor that was willing to work with me and try many options to control pain. I've had an internal pain pump for years and it's made life tolerable. I also take oral painkillers for breakthrough pain. Yes, many people do abuse painkillers so you must be careful and there will be peope who frown on your usage, but for me it was the answer. If I am inactive I forget to take my oral painkiller, so I don't feel I've become addicted.
I was able to lose 55 lbs by eliminating most sweets, fat and use no salt. I would allow myself one weekend day to "splurge". I was unable at this time to exercise, now I am fortunate to be near a pool and exercise with the aid of an "aquajogger".
Good luck to all.

I can relate to most of you about your issues. I am 34yrs just diagnoised with RA in both shoulder, knees, now has moved to hands and feet. About every 6 weeks two new joints swell and hurt. I hurt like a blip!blip! but I rake my girls (Sabirna Huskey and Cockerspainal) for their 1-2 mile walk every day. They are what keeps me moving because it hurts just to be an accountant sitting a a desk all day. So for weight moderation DOSEN'T WORK, make you feel good about yourself PRICELESS.

I am 72 years old. I had to take early retirement because of back problems. I have had 6 back surgeries. I have rods full length of my back, one knee replacement & the other is sore most of the time. I want to walk, but find myself getting very stumbly after a short ways. I know water walking is the thing, but It is 24 miles to the closest pool. I need to get rid of 40 pounds. This winter my hands have got more knots and I can't wear my rings anymore. Help!

annamaria--can you walk? If so, get out and walk, slowly. I started by walking around the block. You have to do this, even if it hurts. It will get better. I can now walk 1 1/2 miles a day, still slow, but at least I am doing something. I also take two aleve per day for pain, and allopurinol for my gout. Exercise doesn't help much in losing weight, but it will help to keep you from gaining more weight. You might want to do without steroids, which have severe side effects, as you've found. You must move, just do it slowly. This helps weight control, depression, and will make you feel more positive. If you walk even a little, every day, you will feel like you are doing something to improve your health.

i have had osteoarthritis for 5 years now and before this ordeal happened to me , i used to be a very slim, strong and active person, very proud to be in my fifty s and looking younger and fitter than other women my age. Now I am a 'blob' of pain and i had to give up the activities i loved most.I have taken so many steroids by mouth and injections that i have developed a severe osteopoenia . Doing exercise is out of the question, i can do only some mild water exercises and when i try something little stronger ,the pain comes back with a vengeance. Of course i have tried a lot of diets from the arthritis magazines ,women's health publications, etc. etc. but everything has being in vain : the scale doesnt budge.... what can i do to lose at least some of the 20 plus pounds i have gained in the last 5 years????I need help!
