Vitamin & Mineral Guide: Vitamin B-1

Converts glucose to energy; essential for normal functioning of the heart, brain, nervous system and muscles.

How Much: RDA = 1.2 mg for men; 1.1 mg for women

Too Much: No known symptoms

Too Little: Deficiency is associated with abnormal carbohydrate metabolism. Prolonged deficiency can affect the nervous and cardiovascular systems.

Foods:  Vitamin B-1 in the form of thiamine is found in whole wheat, brown rice, fish and lentils.  Also in enriched pasta, bread, cereals and rice.

Interactions: Furosemide (Lasix); antacids.

Research Note: Thiamine may improve function of the lining of the arteries, slowing the development or progression of atherosclerosis – especially in those who have impaired glucose tolerance or diabetes that does not require insulin.
