How to Ensure Walking Shoes Fit

Be kind to your feet. Get the tips you need to get the best fit for walking shoes.

By Bryan D. Vargo

Whether you’re just starting a walking program or you’ve got your exercise routine down, the proper pair of walking shoes is essential. And getting the right fit is the most important factor in choosing the right walking shoe, says Arnold Ravick, a podiatrist at Capital Podiatry Associates in Washington, D.C. and an American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) member.

The right shoe should be roomy enough to minimize rubbing against joint deformities, such as bunions and hammertoes, which can cause corns and calluses, but also be snug and firm enough to provide sufficient support. Ravick recommends a cross-trainer as opposed to a running shoe. “It’s a little heavier, but it’s sturdier,” explains Ravick, “and works well for walking and moderate exercise.”

When trying on shoes, move your foot to the front of the shoe and insert your index finger into the shoe behind your heal. If your index finger fits, the shoe fits, says Ravick. The width of the toe box is very important, especially for those with deformities in their toes. As your foot and toes swell, a tight toe box can aggravate bunions and cause additional painful problems.

The time of day you shop for shoes can make a difference. Shop when your foot is swollen and feels the worst to get the best fit, says Ravick. “If your foot can tolerate a shoe when it feels bad, think how great it will be when your foot feels better.”

I'm 51 yrs old. I've worked most of my life either as a cook or a waitress. I've tried to keep my weight down. The last few years have started having tremendous pain in my feet and knees. It feels like my knee is swollen and has cracks in them. My feet feel like I'm walking on broken oyster shells. Today my feet and ankles feel like they are severely sprained. I've been to the drs about this. One gave me a steroid shot in the knees and this helped tremendously for almost a year. The winter does'nt seem to affect them much. But the heat is horrendous. I hate to shop for shoes. I've found one line that helps. Crocs they are a canvas with the extra insert inside the shoe. My dr now has me on Meloxicam. Don't see much improvement from that. But if I sit for a long time, and heaven forbid I prop my feet up and then stand up. What can I do?

Crocs seem to have room enough to accomodate bunion and hammertoes. Pedorthist says shoes are the reason for my arthritis knee joint pain and I bought orthotics, which sometime help but not always. I tore anterior cruciate ligament about 10 yrs ago (feel off bike), and now have excruciating pain in right knee upon rising from chair or car.
Yesterday I got two prednisone shots in both knees, and have relief for first time in years. But I was told this pain-free lasts only a few months. Do you have any specific recommendations that I could use. Sure would appreciate your input.
Thank you,
Dee Wright

I quite recently purchased a pair of "Keen" shoes from Active Endeavors in West Des Moines, IA. They are great! Adding wool "running socks" purchased @ the same time made my feet haven't feel better than they have in years. I never thought that good socks were so important.

I have not worn the shoes on the track yet, but I often forget that I am wearing them around the house. Thank you Keen! Please make more shoes for us sufferers.
