I do yogalaties everyday & my stationary bike though the yogalaties is becoming more painful since both my knees are down to the bone & I will have to have replacements soon. I have found that loosing weight helped along w/walking when when I can. I also do quads, toe presses, squats, & leg lifts. Along w/push-ups. All this to keep my legs as strong as possible. My knees are already bad. No matter how painful exercise is best. I am 43 & have had OA for over 10yrs now.

I have had both knees replaced and did strengthening exercises before each surgery. It helped so much. I did partial leg lifts with a coffee can under my knee and full leg lifts lying on my back with the other leg in a relaxed bent position. Do three sets of ten on each side moving slowly. I also did "mini-squats" to strengthen my quads (which by the way, do most of the support for the knee). Just hold on to a counter top and do three sets of ten. Don't go too deep. For hands - warm in some hot water and squeeze a soft rubber ball gently.

I noticed that Connie, Georg' Carolyn, and Nadine are looking for a solution, but nobody are going to strengthen the knees not even if are replaced(like mine). What we can do is strengthen the inside and outside leg muscles including those in the calf. Loosing waight also helps because every pound we loose takes four of preassure from the knees.

I see many people asking for exercises. I received much benefit from a physical therapist. They can show you exactly how the exercises are to be performed so that you can avoid injury. Where I go also offers therapeutic massage - not your traditional "spa" tx. This is painful while doing but certainly works the "kinks" out and maintains an almost pain-free back for me. Good luck all.

To open bottles and jars, I bought an amazing tool. It is has serrated edges and slips around tiny water bottle caps, or large jars...It has a soft handle and with a little twist one can undo the most stubborn tops and lids...It does not hurt one's hands to use it...Do get yourself one..I use mine several times every day and don't know what I would do without it!

About exercise, not knowing what kind of issues you are coping with....I found bio-feedback excellent. I was able to cure Reynaud's Phenomena, a secondary condition to Reactive Arthritis...which is an auto immune type of arthritis.

I swim every day...It is non-negotiable, unless I have a cold... Swimming for 40 minutes releases endorphins, the body's natural pain killers..and one doesn't need any pain killers at all....It is amazing!

Good luck!

I would encourage anyone with RA to move as much as possible. I was diagnosed with RA about 17 years ago and you can tell I have it by looking at my hands and feet. I started going to a gym in 1973 doing short periods on their machines. I increased my exercise gradually through the years until now I am able to run a hilly half-marathon in 2hrs33minutes. I am 71 so this is a reasonable time. I am hoping to do a full marathon (26 miles) soon. I credit this with keeping moving almost no matter what and also I have been compliant with the prescribed drugs that have been developped over the past few years.

I have personally benefitted from the 'squeeze/contract-the-knee' exercise. Not only is it almost an instant pain-killer (a maximum of 3-5 times in pain), bit it has also helped strengthen my knees.

My knees buckle and cause me to fall. Doctors response is that I'm not a candidate for surgery...what can I do to strengthen my knees and regain confidence in going down steps (I also fall going up steps).

I'm about 15 pounds overweight and am very slowly loosing more; I've been atheletically involved all my life and at age 68 am still not ready for this overly cautious and inactive lifestyle....seems like I'm always recouping from a fall.

Any exercises for strenghtenig would be appreciated, and I'd like exercise log.

Have recently had blood tests and shows high ANA, RA, and high uric acid.

Thank you.

I have a really bad left knee that I am treating w/injections. I notice that my hamstrings are really tight and will cramp at the slightest pull. Other than the quad exercises, are there any I can do to help my knees?
Thank you!
