Easing Into Yoga with Linda Howard

In her Easing into Yoga video, excerpted below, Baltimore-based instructor Linda Howard draws on two decades of experience as a professional instructor to help beginners learn about the different yoga poses, philosophies and health benefits.

Some 25 years ago, Howard turned to yoga seeking an outlet to help manage the stress of a successful marketing career. Instead, she found her calling.

Howard sums up her yoga philosophy with three words: Awareness, acceptance and adaptation. “It’s a process of self-awareness and self-study,” she says. “I think it gives you a way to control the arthritis instead of it controlling you.”

Below are some standard yoga poses that Linda has adapted into seated moves to make them easier for people with limited range of motion.

Easing Into Yoga Learn a bit about yoga and its benefits.
Spinal Twist This easy-to-do pose decreases tension in the spine, shoulders and neck.
Hip Opener This pose, which increases flexibility in hips and eases tension in the hips and low back, is good for those who spend most of the day sitting down.
Downward Facing Dog One of yoga’s most popular poses, this move calms tension, strengthens the arms, shoulders and spine and opens the hips.
Leg Stretch Use resistance bands or a belt to perform these moves, which release tension in the legs, pelvis and low back.
