Arthritis-Friendly Kitchen Tips

Preparing a healthy, nutritious meal is important for good health, but cooking can be daunting when your knees are aching or your fingers are stiff. No one would blame you if you’re tempted to do take-out or you start dialing Domino’s, but if you do that too often, health goes down and weight goes up. Instead, try these shortcuts to diets that help make cooking with rheumatoid arthritis easier:

Batch cook. Prepare two chicken breasts at a time and refrigerate the leftovers to use in salads or sandwiches the next day.

Consider convenience. Try frozen, pre-cut vegetables and fruits.

Stock the crock. Place meat or poultry, pre-sliced vegetables, spices and liquid in a crock pot, turn it on and hours later, enjoy a hot, cooked meal – and only one pot to wash.

Nuke it. Microwaving can heat frozen vegetables or leftovers quickly, without adding fats or depleting nutrients. Using a microwave oven on the countertop eliminates stretching or stooping to cook.

Grip with ease. Use kitchen or cooking utensils with padded handles or grips.

Belly up to the bar. Instead of standing at your counter or stovetop, pull up a high barstool and sit down to chop, mix or stir.

Good news ladies. I hope this is not too late for you to see.
No more washing the crockpot, above, only one pot to wash!!
When you are in the supermarket go to the Reynolds Wrap aisle and see 'Slow Cooker Liners', line your crockpot with it with the top wrapped over the edges and viola, when done just rinse bag and throw away.
They are amazing, they do not tear, melt, burn or anything. They work great. One more step to do away with.

I wanted to comment on the excellent barstool idea for kitchen use at countertops. I have done this for years when chopping veggies, etc. I bought a drafting stool from an office supply store, which has lumbar support in the back, adjusts for height and rolls, luv it!
The parrafin wax bowl also great for hands and fingers, saves the day for me. If the grandkids are around they practically fight over who peels the cool wax, and I have to chase them out of my kitchen chair.

A hint for the hand/thumb/finger pain...go to a beauty supply store and invest a little in a hot paraffin bath. It helps my hands so much with the pain and also the stiffness. Blessings to you all and prayers for less pain.

Dear Aida,

I work on the computer a lot and also have arthritic pain in the base of my thumb on occasion, and I found a stretchy glove-type hand support in the local drugstore that keeps my thumb from moving as much and therefore reduces the pain. It is useable on either hand and comes in sizes small, medium and large and is made by Futuro (futuro.com). The sku number on it is 09184. They call it an "energizing support glove". It might help you. Good luck!

Treat your high blood pressure and arthritis to a gentle or therapeutic yoga class. The deep breathing will lower your blood pressure and the stretching will relieve your arthritis.

I totally cured myself of fibromyalgia by taking yoga. I now teach seniors and people with medical problems and see tremendous progress with this gentle exercise.

I wish to know if others with arthritis also have high blood pressure by the afternoon. I hope to avoid taking meds for BP. I am experimenting by taking 500mgs of Salsalate after lunch--so far my BP is staying below 130.

Neurosurgeon prescribed generic medicine for the severe nightly hand-up-arm pain. The med is fairly common and WORKS! This to try if corpal tunnel isn't diagnosed. It has helped my arthritis all over body. Won't mind you e-mailing me for name of med. mach1937@aol.com

I was kidnapped and rape when I was 19. I am now 52. When he kidnapped me the whole time I thought he was going to kill me when. I think he didn’t because I talked to him asking him why. His response was “Someone like me would never date someone like him.” I remember telling him “You never know until you try.” I lot of other things happen while I was abducted. Anyhow, after this happen I was afraid to come out side. I stay in bed. The pain started in my legs and move all over my body. After being hospitalized twice, I was diagnosed with Juvenile RA. I refused to take all of those drugs because they only made me worse. Every time I’m scared, my body closes down. Sometime I faint. Two years I was diagnosed with PSTD. Studies now show PSTD leads to RA. Now I know I need to be treated for PSTD more than RA….

In Montana, we have no Arthritis Awareness walks/runs/other events. What would need to be done to host an awareness walk in my Billings community?

In response to Rosalie, try using a trackball mouse instead of a regular mouse, you can use your whole hand to move the ball or switch up fingers to move it so it doesn't hurt as much ... there are also large key keyboards ... you might try searching "adaptive computer tools" or "adaptive keyboards" in a search engine to find one that meets your needs most ... also use large handled tools and silverware in the kitchen and at the table as it keeps your hands from cramping up when you use your computer ...

Hi, I would like to voluntary your organization.
Also I would like to know if I have arthritis. Lately went to a rehabilitation institute. I was not sure which was the diagnostic! they check all my body but not my wrist which it hurts. Specially my thumb in its base.
I am sort of sad because I am an esthetician and I work with my hands.
My thumb is in pain when I try to grip something, impossible to bend backward.
Anything you tell me will help me. Thanks in advance,
Aida Salmon
