Kitchen and Cooking Tips

Get cooking. On days that you feel like it cook double portions or even enough for the whole week. Then freeze and use when you’re  not having a good day.

Roll it! Use a pizza cutter to cut sandwiches, chicken breasts, lasagna and other foods. Hold it with both hands -- and roll.

Loosen up. Use a nutcracker or long-handled pliers to loosen tightly sealed bottles.

Drip dry. When washing dishes, use a rack to let them air dry. This saves you energy and saves your hands from having to maneuver a towel.

Open up. When buying milk, choose plastic containers that have twist-off tops, instead of cartons or bottles that have tops that need to be pried off.

Easier meal prep. Save time, effort and clean-up with one-pot meals. Stews, pasta dishes or chicken cooked with vegetables in a foil disposable pan or oven-baking bag can make easy meals with limited cleanup.

If you are using a jar of cook in sauce or similar where the lid is vacuum sealed and too tight to open, just puncture it with a tin opener, as soon as you introduce air, it's easy to open.

Macy's has a good selection of soft, wide handled kitchen utensils. I have one of the jar openers and it works okay for the things I cannot fit into my Black & Decker "Lids Off Automatic Jar Opener". It oppen Jars and cans. It has saved me since I cannot do either manually because my joints are so bad.

Whenever I have alot of pans or skillets to wash I allow them to soak in very hot water for at least 10 minutes, then use I use a scrubbing brush that has a handle (about 8-9 inches long). It makes the chore easier & alot quicker for me! These can be found in Wal-Mart's dishwashing aisle, of course. (I've even bought a few at Lowe's). I also designate one for cleaning toilets & one for the bath tubs. *If you need the handle more comfortable, try enlarging it by wrapping a soft cloth around it to the width that you want, then duct tape it! It's a good idea until someone makes a wider, softer handled scrub brush!

one of the best things I have is a Pampered Chef opener. On one end what looks like a bottle opener will actually pop the seal on jars and on the other end there is a bottle opener and a thing to put under the tab of tab pull cans.

I can't function without kitchen scissors. It makes it much easier on my hands for opening bags and cutting small things like bacon pieces. I also watch for fat-handled utensils, and if you have to compensate for one of these, wrap a paper towel around the handle several times and secure with a rubber band (keep it away from the burner)

I can't live without a small strap wrench in the kitchen. It's the best thing I've found for opening jars and bottles because I don't have to able to close my hand around the handle. Just adjust the strap and push.

I have osteoarthritis and cannot be on my feet in the kitchen for a longer time. I am using
a stool to cut vegies and/or frying food on the stove. It works and takes the pressure off my joints especially in my knees.
