Get the help you need to reach your health goals and remain happy

Contrary to popular belief, asking for help with a chronic condition isn’t a sign of weakness. Au contraire: It means you’re in touch with reality, because you realize you’ll be more successful if you don’t try to go it alone. In fact, study after study shows that people who receive professional counseling or support are more likely to maintain their emotional well-being and to achieve health goals, like losing weight, quitting smoking or sticking with an exercise regime.

“Professionals such as psychologists or personal trainers have years of experience and training under their belt, so their advice is likely to be more effective than that you’d receive from a well-meaning friend or family member,” says psychologist Simon Rego, associate director of psychology training at Montefiore Medical Center in New York City, and assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, also in New York. Plus, adds Rego, “Spending your hard-earned money is incentive alone to follow through.”

Ready to take the first step? Here are four different types of professionals to call upon to help you be a better ‘you,’ and how to find each one.

Personal trainers can help you establish a workout regime, make sure you’re doing each exercise move correctly and motivate you to stick with your workout.

A weight loss physician (bariatrician) specializes in assisting obese individuals to get their weight to a healthy level, while also treating and toring weight-related problems like arthritis.

Psychologists are best-recognized for their role in treating depression, but they can also help you work through stressors and break bad behavioral patterns.

A dietitian can determine how many calories you need and whether your diet is deficient in certain nutrients, then devise an eating plan that meets your goals, like losing weight or getting your blood sugar under control.

HI I HAVE FIBROMYALGIA, AND HAD AN INJURY AT WORK, THAT INVOLVED A HURT ARM(RIGHT) THEY TOOK A MRI AND THEY FOUND SEVERE ARTHERITIS IN MY ELBOW, THE DOCTOR SAYS HE NEVER SEEN SUCH ADVANCE ARTHERITIS IN SOME ONE MY AGE.... MY QUESTION IS SHOULD I SEE A ATHERITIS DOCTOR AND HOW DO I FIND ONE? I LIVE IN HILLSBORO NH AND WOULD LIKE TO SEE A SPECIALIST. CAN YOU DIRECT ME ON WERE TO GO!!

ALSO MY ARM IS NOT HEALING VERY FAST,I HAD A STRAIN ON MY FORE ARM, TENDONITIS ON MY ELBOW AND STRAIN IN MY UPPER ARM AND SHOULDER, COULD MY FIBROMYALGIA BE CAUSING THE LONG HEALING PROCESS? ITS BEEN SINCE 8/6/09, AND DID THIS INJURY POSSIBLY MADE MY FIBRO WORST AND COULD I BE PERMANTLY DAMAMGED, MY FOREARM HEALED, ALONG WITH UPPER ARM AND SHOULDER, ITS JUST MY ELBOW THAT IS GIVING ME ALOT OF PAIN, AND I SOMETIMES GET SPASMS UP MY ARM THAT IS VERY PAINFUL? HOPE YOU CAN HELP ME... THANK YOU!

I can sympathize with you. I am allergic to most anti inflammatory meds RX or OC. I found it necessary to find natural alternative solutions. If you haven't try cutting out potatoes and all white breads from your diet. I take a high quality fish oil @ bedtime and in the am, I also take a product called Flex which has glucosamine, MSM, chondroitin and collagen that has helped a lot. A natural anti inflammatory is bromelain I take 600mg every 4 hrs for pain. It is an enzyme that helps break down the inflammation.

I am in desperate need of help this pain is hardly bearable. I am an assistant teacher
in a day care setting I almost hate going to
work. I cannot get up and dowm like I use to
but it's the nature of the job.
I work every day that I can still I have no
money. my health care begins january 2010,
I need treatment right now please.
is there anyone to help me,is their any place
I can be directed to? the pain meds
across the counter just don't help.
please help me thank you.
