Dry Mouth: Is It Sjögren’s?

When it comes to dry mouth, medications are often the culprit.

By Mary Anne Dunkin

While dry mouth is a hallmark of Sjögren’s syndrome, not all oral dryness results from Sjögren’s. Any problem that affects the salivary glands can cause dry mouth as can any disease or injury affecting the area of the brain that controls salivation. Lifestyle factors, such as smoking and chewing tobacco can also cause dry mouth. However, the most common cause is medications you take for other conditions.

Your doctor can perform tests to determine the cause of dry mouth, but if you take one of the following medications, ask your doctor if it might be causing or at least worsening your dry-mouth condition.

  • Blood pressure medications, including alpha adrenergic blockers such as clonidine (Catapres); beta adrenergic blockers such as propranolol (Inderal) and atenolol (Tenormin) and combined alpha, beta blockers such as labetalol (Normodyne, Trandate)
  • Antidepressants including amitriptyline (Elavil), nortriptyline (Pamelor), desipramine (Norpramin), parnate (Tranylcypromine) and phenelzine (Nardil)
  • Muscle relaxants, including cyclobenzaprine (Flexeril), methocarbamol (Robaxin) and baclofen (Lioresal)
  • Urologic drugs such as oxybutynin (Ditropan), tolterodine (Detrol) and yohimbe (Procomil)
  • Cardiac drugs including disopyramide phosphate (Norpace)
  • The Parkinson’s medication carbidopa-levodopa (Sinemet)
  • Decongestants and sleeping aids (many are over the counter) including chlorpheniramine maleate (Chlor-Trimeton), pseudoephedrine (Pseudofed), hydroxyzine (Atarax) and diphenhydramine (Benadryl).

I forgot to mention in my previous post, that I am on Metformin (Diabetes), Norvasc and Benecar (BP), and Omeprazole (generic Prilosec). Also multivitamin daily and a low dose asprin. Would any of these contribute to my dry mouth problem?

I have had a dry mouth for several months. My throat feels like it is glued shut sometimes, especially at night. My doctor has not offered any help. I am now unable to taste my food without getting a bad taste in my mouth. I had a bad fall about 3 months ago, and I hit my head very hard. I was wondering if that could have an effect on my sense of taste. Is this a permanent condition or does it eventually clear up?

I am 65 and all my teeth need to come out. I am in Pa. and I really don't think the dentists I have seen are familiar with sjogrens and dentures/implants. How do you get posts in back and go without any teeth for 3-6 months for posts to settle in jawbone? How do I know how many I need. How do I find a dentist who knows enough to be pain free at the end. I need input asap. Thanks.

I have SS and for my dry mouth I found something called Therabreath, they sell it at Target, Walmart and Drugstore.com. I have tried Biotene and I didn't like it and felt no difference. Therabreath doesn't taste bad and really helped the dry mouth and I felt like was producing more saliva and refreshed. I hoped this will help you.
