Are you serious? Exercise? Look, when I was first diagnosed with RA In 2011, I exercised on the recumbant bike, walked the trail and my knees were more stiff than ever. When I walk the trail, I end up using two canes for walking.
I also might add, I am a pianist/minister of music when I am engaged in several hours of rehearsal, my hands are in horrible pain which lasts sometimes for days.
Please rethink exercise for joints that are already being compromised by degeneration.

Is it common when a person has RA to be on Morphine for pain. I have a friend who is on 30mg daily. That seems awful excessive. They also take Enbril and methotrexate i believe is the other medication.

I was diagnosed in college with RA and 10 years later the pain and fatigue was unbearable. With an RF factor of 140, my doctor suggested adding methotrexate and steroids to the other three drugs I was on. At the same time, I met a lady who introduced me to Kangen alkanized water while at hot yoga. I drank it for free and immediately felt a difference. Eventually, I bought my own Kangen machine. I am pain free, have tons of energy and am not taking any medicine. I look and feel very healthy now. Kangen was the only thing that has worked for me, it is a miracle.

How can you not treat RA without Drugs, what about the inflammation? I am taking Methrotrexate and Enbrel. I'm not on any drugs for pain but RA has invaded my lungs and I thought you had to treat the inflammation.

I've been taking water therapy at the local YMCA but the water is so cold that I can hardly stand to get started.

I can't believe what has happened to me!
I have had RA and Sjorgrens for over 22 years. i was one of the 1st on Enbrel, it worked for me for about 15 years but then the infections started. I tried Infusions and still the bladder infections. My doctor put me on steriods 20mg a day, vicodin as many as i wanted - LOL. And Advil. Still had problems, my doc even got me a handicapped placard. SUCKS! I'm too young for this. 54.
Then i saw a friend of mine i hadn't seen in about a year. The last 3 times i saw her she looked like she was dying. She also has RA and Fibro. Anyway She looked fabulous! She said she drinks cannabis tea all day long and i should try it. Sooo i got my MMJ card and started about a week ago. Can't believe how i feel, no more vicodin, no more advil and only 1 steroid pill before bed. The tea doesn't make you loopy. Please you all need to check this out.

I have had RA for three years, my RA factor was 671, remember the ranges for RA factor is 1-14. I was taking Methotrexate six pills every Wednesday, folic acid and Humira shots every ten days. My pain was increasing and my doctor upped methotrexate to 8 pills. If you have RA you know the rest, RA had me and my life in bondage.
December 2010, I was introduced to a Kangen Water, yes just water. I have been pain free for seven months. I gradually came off of my methotrexate and Humira. I believe God sent the water to me so that I could be a testimony for all of you who are trapped in the RA pain.
Now I play volleyball with my church, attend jazzercise classes, and swim. Yes, I am doing all the fun activities I used to do and without pain. I have lost a couple of dress sizes now that I am active and watching my food intake. Please take the time to read about the water on the website http://hrhj9907.enagicweb.info. God bless you all.

I was diagnosed with RA 2 2/1 years ago. Was put on 4 pills of 2.5 mg each methotrasate weekly, increasing to 10 pills of methotrasate, plus 2 pills weekly of 5 mg each, plus a regiment of simpony injection monthly, then changing to 2 injection of Humira, and then just recently, my doctor wants to change my medication to an IV one, as the Humira was not working much either. Finally, three weeks ago, I was on Face Book talking to a friend living in Hong Kong who has also had severe RA problem, who, after 2 months on a ETM (Electricity Therapy Machine), is completely pain free now, and RA symptoms completely gone! I asked her about the machine and the therepy, and apparently, this machine is widely used in Hongkong, Malaysia, Taiwan, Thailand, Indonesia and China. The machine itself is very expensive, but in all those countries, they have Centers that are equipped with these machines and people are charged approx. US$100 for 30 minutes to sit and receive the therapy. My friend said she saw results in only being on it for just one week, and now she is completely normal. She said there are all kinds of testimony of the machine helping people with various ailments with good result, as the therapy aim at the whole body, and not just certain organs. At first I thought about going to Hongkong to try the machine, but then figure it was too expensive as I figure with with the plane tickets, hotels and all, I might as well buy the machine. So I asked her to purchase the machine for me. It arrived last Tuesday. Prior to getting the machine, I stopped all the medication I was taking, as I just was apprehensive about the toxicity and side effects of all my medication. I even stopped my injection that I was to take that Sunday. Well, the next day, Monday, because of not taking the medication, I was in pain, but I was determined to wait till the machine comes. The machine arrived Tuesday afternoon, and after reading the instruction manuel, I went on it on Wednesday morning, starting at the second lowest level (2) at minimum time of 30 minutes. (recommanded by manufacturer). I noticed results right away, and all the sharp pains went away. I increased my treatment to 2 times a day for 60 minutes each time. Today is my 6th day on the machine and I am pain free, except for the stiffness in the joints of my hand as there are still some slight inflammation in my fingers, but I am a happy camper!!! The tiedness that comes with RA is completely gone. I have so much energy I cannot believe. Normally, I could hardly get out of bed, and even when I am out of bed, by the afternoon, I have to take a long nap as I felt as if I was hit by a truck! Now, I am up doing all kinds of things! The machine is made in Korea, and is approved by US FDA as well as FDAs and health dept. of all the countries I mentioned plus all the EU countries. The machine is expensive though approx. US$12,500 not counting shipping, but it is well worth the money. I am now looking into getting a dealership or franchise in the US to open centers so as to help people. I am now still tracking my progress, but definitely see the improvement each time I use it.

I'm 18 and I have had RA for 2 years now and I also have Mitral valve prolapse. I was so depress at first knowing that I have to go through all this at a young age. Coping and living with two incurable condition is not that easy. My anxiety, chest pain and arthritis pain was killing me yet I prayed so hard for a stronger back to carry such burdens. Now, I'm on methotrexate and prednisone for my RA and still dealing with its unpleasant side effects.

Now, I'm focusing on how to get well by exercising and eating a healthy diet and of course by praying constantly and believing that God has a plan for us, not to harm us but to prosper us. All we have to do is to trust and to hold on. GOD BLESS US ALL. May you also find peace and real happiness through God who strengthens us.

I started Naturopathy last month and I can honestly say I am pain free. I do still have inflammation in my fingers but I can fully make a fist with my right hand and almost with my left. I can do pushups where I could barely bend my wrists before. I can walk barefoot without the feeling of rocks under my skin. My 18 month old would follow me with my slippers when I first going without them so I would put them back on as barefoot was impossible. I am happy and I have energy, am not fatigued. Yes, it is a rigid diet but it's just food and I need my health more. I do love to cook and get creative so I don't think it's as challenging as it could be for some. Yes, there are a lot a supplements but I think I am in sync now. Pain free and energized - can't ask for anything more right now. Good luck to all of you. Not to say it's perfect as I still wake up stiff, hobble to the bathroom but it all lasts 20-30 minutes tops. I will have this condition forever, I know, but I can now handle it at the well managed level.

Cindi,

I've had R.A. for almost a decade now, and I've been on methotrexate for most of it. When they first found it, I was 17, and they wanted to start agressive medication on me. They decided Methotrexate and Bextra would be a good combination. Unfortunately, my immune system took a large dip, and I ended up with quite a few severe problems that we had to focus on. I stopped the Methotrexate and went on Sulfasalizine. I could definitely tell a difference in the progression of my R.A.. I also had to stop Bextra due to the fact that it cause stomach ulcers, which I still have to this day. Once my health recovered, I was placed back on Methotrexate. I've been on it again for the past 6+ years straight. I can fully attest to the fact that it makes you weak and you can feel helpless at times. I wonder if your doctor placed you on too high of a dosage to start off? I was never "out of commission" for any length of time when I started taking it, nor am I now. I also have a friend that recently started taking it, and it doesn't affect her in that manner either. However, each person reacts differently to the disease and the medications.

I would highly suggest working to get together a support group. You are going to need it. It doesn't get any better, and it becomes disheartening when you see things that you are missing that others can easily do. I am a strong believer in the Methotrexate drug, because I know that I would be much worse off if I were not on it. Although you feel great since you have been off it, it won't last forever. I just try to think of it this way - I could have a couple of great years, or many, many good ones. I choose quantity, because I've been working very hard to change my quality. I work with a personal trainer at my gym that designs low-impact workouts for me. I am NEVER in the mood to go, and I complain the entire time I am working out with him, but I feel amazing afterwards. I can tell when I haven't worked out in awhile, because I start to slip into that depression and helplessness again. When I work out on a regular basis, I am in a happier mood, and I have a better outlook on life.

I hate to hear that anyone has to go through this, because I know exactly what it is like. The hardest obstacle for me is work. My co-workers have no idea that it isn't just joint pain. So much goes on behind the curtains. I hope this helps you Cindi, or anyone else that reads it.

Hi,
I have had R.A. for 1 1/2 yrs. I was on Pred., Met. & Plaq. In Dec. my R.A. doc started me on Orencia infusions. I only had 2 infusions because with the 1st one I developed a sinus infection and with the 2nd infusion I ended up with acute bronchitis and pleurasy. My doc stopped the infusions and also the Met. until the infection was completely cleared up.
Prior to all this I had told her that when I took the Met each week(1 time a wk oral dose) it would wipe me out for 2-3 days. She always seemed surprised by this.
While off the Met. to let the infection clear up I noticed how much more energy I had. She said it would stay in my system for a few months so I would have the benefit of it keeping things relatively quiet.
These past few months have been wonderful being off it. I have felt like my old self. I was no longer constantly tired and could keep up the pace I had pre R.A.
Unfortunately, for the past week or so I have noticed swelling in my hands, pain in knee joints and shoulder. I still take the Plaq., and low dose Pred., but the thought of having to go back on the Met. is very depressing. Has anyone else had the same side effects with the Met.? When I was on it I also had to take folic acid. Would like to know if anyone else had same experience and if you found a way to overcome side effects.
Thanks.
Kathy

My hair started falling out two years ago by the handfuls. No pain just severe hair loss. Then admitted in the hospital for a 2.4cm staghorn kidney stone( have never had one). Four operations later the stone was finally gone, but still losing my hair. Have had five puch biopsies nothing comes out wrong. Then after thousands of dollars in blood work, my RH factor was off the charts. It seemed like overnight the pain becomes unbearable. I am 58 years young, 140 lbs., can barely use my hands, can't walk more then a block without being in pain, knees re gone, have been diagnosed with RA,OA, Scoliosis of the spine and Scerosis of the hip. In the last four months have had 3 operations on my ears for cysts and hearing loss.
I have been taking Placquenil,Prednisone, Methtrexate, Darvocet.Folic Acid to help stop the hair loss. None of the above work.

My Rhuematologist wants to start injections.
Everyone says don't let it get you down, but how do you get back up when you can't stir your own coffee. I have tired everything under the sun to stop the hair loss, now about 75% bald. Two years ago my hair was so thick I broke combs just trying to comb it out after washing.

Have only been married for less then three years. What a way to go into a marriage, however I am thankful that I have a loving husband who does try to support me, just doesn't know what to do for me.

Hi Everyone,

I was to share my story with you all with the hopes that you will put your trust in Jesus. I wrote in a while back...it has been 4 months since I have been off of the meds and completely depending on Jesus. I have been through a lot of pain; pain that had made me think that death would be better. I found that the more I relied on God and allowed him to be my doctor. I found out that I didn't have LOVE in my heart. I only had unforgiveness, bitterness, resentment, a lot of anger, self hatred, and a low self esteem. Well I give God all the Glory He taught me that I needed to FORGIVE, boy that was tough at first...I have been through a series of classes with God. LOL! Yet I am FREE! FREE to Love with no fear of being rejected...He tells that He only gives us Power, love, and a soundmind. I would recommend you read the Battlefield of the Mind by Joyce Meyer. I do understand that some of you blame God for your situation but don't He LOVES us and He wants us to be strong and overcome the things that the enemy has put on us. Take responsibility for your self and get up and live yes the pain hurts but so does the pain hurt when we women have our babies yet we find soon after we want another one. Don't be afraid of the pain go through and ask Jesus to help you. He knows he already shared your pain well going to Calvery. For those that don't believe there is a God; don't be a fool you are too smart for that. Trust God and reach out for him...I am doing so much better I can walk, I have little pain, the swelling as went down, and most of all I have PEACE. God is still helping me to overcome my fears and hurts, but I can LOVE now and it feels wonderful. I will continue to pray for all of you. God Bless and remember I love you but God loves you more.

This RA is the worst thing ever....I am not taking any medications because the side effects were worse than
the pain I suffer in my hands and wrists; sometimes my legs and feet.

The prednisone helped, but one of my eyes started
bleeding inside; I am told that it is because of the prednisone. So what, now I am supposed to go blind in order to feel some relief? No, I am not using the prednisone or anything else anymore. I am, of course, praying and keeping my faith that this too shall pass. In the meantime I am in constant pain. I am trying to go it alone for now, just eating healthy and taking care of myself. Be careful with prednisone.

I've had RA for 3 years but was diagnosed a year ago. It's in my hands and shoulders primarily. Prednisone did nothing but give me major hot flashes over and beyond what I was already having. Paquenil gave me temporary hearing loss and permanent tinnitus in both ears. Now I've been on Methotrexate for 3 months as we ramp up slowly. My hair is thinning out on top but at least I'm not sick to my stomach...yet. I tried fasting for 5 days and was on a vegan (no animal products) diet for 3 months. Through all this *nothing* has decreased the swelling in my hands nor taken away the pain in them and my shoulders. If the mtx doesn't work or the side affects far outweigh the benefits then I guess I just won't take anything.

wow! I read your words and hope this gets out to those who it will help and those who want to hear part of my story too. I became symptomatic at 18 months. It took several doctors of all kinds, who called my mom "crazy" , and many not pleasant procedures, til one specialist looked at my body and right away diagnosed me with JRA. I was treated with Naprosyn and weekly gold injections. Every joint and major organ was affected by this disease.I could not wear most shoes because they hurt my feet and my mother would buy up numerous pairs when she found one I could tolerate. My life growing up was very different from others but I didn't know any different. I know I always wanted to fit in and didn't want any of the other kids to know something was different. At age 10 I went into remission. No more gold injections, no more naprosyn...nothing. I was left with limited joint mobility, but learned very clever ways of getting around these so as to the person just meeting me wouldn't have a clue ( maybe if they were a dr!!!) Anyway highschool went smoothly, college, my first pregnancy actually increased my mobility or range of motion. I read somewhere once that being pregnant stops RA but after delivery it can return? I carried heavy things, mowed my own half acre, walked my dogs, got on the ground to dig and garden, was in great shape. I ran with the big dogs. Met my hubby, mentioned i had JRA as a child, had my second pregnancy. ( by the way all of by births were vaginal even with very limited leg/hip mobility. you should have seen those drs and nurses faces, but I believed in me and my body! anyway of track to this long but shortened version! My husband is in the military we moved to NM away from my family with a 10 month old and my 9 year old. NM weather was great for me, I felt good in SD that's all I knew , but New Mexico I felt like asuper hero!!! I did it all dogs, kids, house , groceries, yard while my husband was gone for the most part of five years. We knew he'd be deployed to Afghanistan but wanted one more baby. I was pregnant and felt fantastic. I don't know if all I dealt with gave me a high tolerance for pain but I think I do have a high tolerance. Example being , I got shingles, yes shingles while pregnant with my last baby.He was fine! But the dr gave me vicodin to take for the pain and i refused. I also walked in at 9 1/2 cm delivered 30 mins after arriving to the hospital! Not gloating just trrying to prove a point , I can usually take pain. Here's where it all turns. We were restaioned to Northern Virginia. The pain appeared almost instantly. Within a few weeks my joints were aching, bad. I thought it was the moving of all the furniture and stuff. But the pain was increasing and it hurt. It is very humid here in the summer and now i've spent winter here it is sooo cold and wet and snowy. I am in miserable pain. After 27 years free it is not fun to have to think this has returned. The doctors , so far, are unreceptive, they don't believe me? The x-rays don't lie. They have given me naprosyn which I occasionally take. I am not abig pill popper and they have mentioned methotrexate but it looks very dangerous and not worth it. I have a friend who is a HHP and she said stay away from those they can cause other problems. She recomended RHUS TOX ( this is found at whole foods, but please check with a local HHP before trying) I have not started to use it so I can't say how well or if it works. I hate taking meds and I am still wondering why i in 27 neve had any pains until this move. I am trying to gather information on climate and arthritis pain. I am trying to get us back to the dessert where I am hoping I will feel better. The doctors I have encounter so far and the many dotors my mother had to battle seemed to be clueless. Often making us both feel crazy. My closing thoughts are that YOU must be you're biggest advocate. Research everything, I mean everything. Don't take "their" word. The may be trying their best, but you know your body and the answers are out there somewhere. Hopefully by reading eacothers stories we can get a little comfort and some answers to our own questions. If you actually read this entire entry then thank you for listening to a piece of my JRA story and I hope your suffering is remedied soon.

I've been diagnosed with RA since I was 15... I'll be celebrating my 15yrs of RA this year and although it is a horrible thing to have I do accept it as being part of who I AM. ***if it wasn't for the medication Methrotexate- Glucosamine- Vit D- Omg 3 and eating right, I would def. not be able to walk- move my head or even brush my teeth. But I can tell you even though right now am feeling pain. I still get to go to work doing one of the most physical jobs out there and I get to see the world.

All in all- dont give up, as painful as it is, exercise *even if just to do a few stretches in front of the couch :) eat healthy *mainly to keep a healthy weight in order to remove extra pounds off those joints... and dont give up on meds or dossage until you've figured out what works for YOU. Remember the earlier you control your RA the less damage you will encounter to your joints...

Dont let it control you- welcome it as a way of getn' to know your body and respecting yourself. and never forget to smile because theres always someone dealing with a bigger brick wall than you. Love u all!

I read your stories and can identify with each one of you. I tried predosone and other drugs - it took me all but 4 days to realize that "western man made medicine" was not the way to go. And being a city kid this new way was rather unusual - but I decided to turn to nature - thanks to a friend of mine.
I have been taking all things that are given to us" TUMERIC in liquid form - great for inflammation , GINKO liqid form blood circulation, Green tea in liquid form - Antioxidant and JOINT VIBRANCE from Whole foods. Try it and it may help you! May God bless you all.

I was diganosed with Fibro 6 years ago & RH 3 years ago. I've been thru most of the treatments listed, some did help. Loss of insurance caused me to find a new Doctor. The new doctor did further blood tests and now suggests I have Lupus. With no insurance to cover further testing. I am at a stand still. I was recently approved for disability, but there is a 24 month waiting period for any medical assistance. So much for the tests I need to determine what Kind of Lupus I have and how to treat it. Anyone know of where I can get medical treatment?

I have had RA for about 2-1/2 years now. Plaquenil, Methtrexate & Prednisone current Rx Meds. A little over a year ago an Alternative Veteranarian suggested that I read up on "Leaky Gut Syndrome". Google it. It is interesting. I began eating differently...much as Geneva says below. Stay away from processed foods-sugar & white flour especially; more fruit, grains, vegetables, etc. Supplements-Vit D, E, Fish Oil, joint supplements MSM/Glucosamine/Hyaluronic Acid, Calcium Citrate, multi-vitamin, probiotics. With changes in eating and participating in a program called "Naturally Slim" I have lost 80 pounds and regained a lot of my mobility!
Walking, yoga, meditation, relaxation and prayer have helped, too.

I've had r.a. for about three years. I've been on numerous meds. which works for awhile. The pain is mostly on my shoulders elbows and fingers.I was on humeira, mtx and kept getting infections that i landed in the e.r. with 105 fever.Iam now trying more natural meds.iI was also on predisone which made me gain at least 15 lbs.I work
daily sometime it's hard to do daily chores.I also developed some nodules that went away after going back on mtx and predisone.the share of cost on my insurance per month is very high so that leaves me looking for alternatives. My Mom also has it for at least 40 years. What can i do? Thanks

My first symptoms started over-night 8 months ago. I was diagnosed with RA 3 weeks ago. I will start taking Plaquenil tomorrow. Has anyone else achieved remission by taking a DMARD within 9 months of onset of symptoms? I plan to take med for only 8 months to try to achieve remission. Has anyone experienced any long term side effects for taking Plaquenil less than 9 months? Last week I fasted for 4 days and was 95% symptom free by 4th morning. 3 days later I had a flare up on wrist/arm and 5 days later pain started creeping back into my joints. I have an appt with allergist to see if I have celiac(gluten intolerance) or other food allergies. Does anyone else have celiac or other food allergies that keep their RA flared up? My RA was triggered by a shellfish allergic reaction.

I have been dealing with RA since I was 17 and am now 53. For years I have been telling the Dr's that certain joins really hurt or how tired I was. My right toes on my foot really starting hurting a few years back. I could then feel the left start. I explained this to my RA DR and he said it was probably from my shoes. This has gone for 8 years. I switched Dr's last Jan when I knew the big lumps in my left hand was more then carpel tunnel. I went to a teaching Hospital Rheaumatoid department. They listen to me. I had ultra sounds done on my hands and toes. I was told he had not seen joints this bad in a long time. Come to find out my blood work was comming back ok. All these Dr's thought it was all in my head. The Dr's at the hospital RA department said if they had not done the ultra sound they would have thought it was all in my head also. Is this a common factor having normal blood results but very active RA. Has anyone else had this and does anyone have any suggestions or help for me in this matter.

I'm 66 years old and I was force to retire early in life. The best thing I found was fish oil with om#3 in it, & keeping your join's warm at all time's in the winter. Moving from one state to the other won't do a thing for you but take your money that you really need. Plus the best med's I found so far is to put the LORD back into your life and he will help you in many way's! May god bless us all with our pain's.thank you my friend's.

I have had inflammatory arth for about 12 years and through a recent, prolonged flare-up (following months of pregnancy, nursing and inactive arthritis) I have been diagnosed with RA. My husband and I don't feel the prescribed Methotrexate benefits outweigh the potential risks, so I've decided not to take it.
Instead, I, too, have seen a naturopath and ayurvedic medicine specialist. With the elimination of dairy, gluten, nightshade vegetables and addition of several vit's and alpha lipoic acid supplements, I've been much more comfortable with the symptoms. Like Geneva, I, too give God the glory to having enlightened me with the wisdom of these food-related inflammatory responses. As well, I believe that through spiritual healing in areas where I have to surrender and make peace in my heart, (read "A Better Way") that in time, I will be healed of this disease. Praying that Kenneth A. has success in his treatment so we may all benefit from Grandmother's wisdom.
Blessings and strength to everyone. Positive attitude goes a long way to healing a person.

I have just finished reading some of the painful stories on this web site. I am so sorry for all of the suffering that is going on, because of these ailments, and my sympathy goes out to all of you. I recently moved, and was going through my papers. I came across a note that I had jotted down while visiting my grandmother some years ago. She suffered terribly with RA. At the time of my visit with her, I noticed that her hands, which had been deformed previously. Had returned to their normal state. I asked her what she had been taking to reverse the symptoms. She explained to me she had met a much older woman at the local grocery store, and that woman gave her a home remedy to prepare, that would aleviate all of her symptoms. I know sounds too good to be true, right. She fixed some up as directed, and shortly all her symptoms dissapeared and she regained use of her hands, and the returned to a normal appearance. I hope to discuss this with formula in hand, with my local university. In hopes we can bring it to aid all of you who are suffering. May God grant me success.

I was informed over a year ago that the test they took showed positive for RA. I felt as if I was dreaming it was so unreal as the doctor broke the news to me. I tried their meds but they just did not work for me. So now I am trying Jesus. I give God glory for helping me this far. He has released His wisdom and knowledge to let me know what foods I need to stay away from...my diet consists of fresh fruits, veggies, and fish. Stay away from process foods as well as all dairy...if you go on line and search for "foods that cause inflamation" and follow what is recommended that will help a lot with the pain. Also make sure you are drinking plenty of water. I have also had to take in supplements like Flax oil, calcium, vit D3, bromelain, and joint repair. Stay encourage and focus on the good and not the bad. I will be praying for all of you because I know prayer works.

Hello,

I am 20 years old and for a year and a half I have had excruciating joint and back pain. In the begining, the pain started in my lower back and I have four knots on my back. Then the pain radiated to my hips, knees, and ankles. Now, for 3 months, the pain is in my neck, hands, elbows, and the rest of my back and joints. I have gone to 6 doctors and one diagnosed me with fybromyalgia and the one I'm seeing now has narrowed it down to either RA or osteoarthritis. I have no insurance so getting answers is a slow process. I had a rough childhood, with some extreme chores and an abusive father. I ran for 13 yrs, but now I find myself lucky if I can walk. I normally tried to ignore the pain, but I just can't. My joints pop and hurt constantly and it feels like I'm breaking my bones repeatedly. My hands hurt so bad that I have come to the point of crying and that's really bad for me since I don't cry often. My occupation, for now, is cleaning and I've had to wrap both of my wrists and I'm very limited. I feel like I'm more of a harm, than an asset and that really depresses me. I'm a sophmore in college and my major is nursing, but I'm second guessing myself. I've wanted to be in healthcare my whole life and I don't want this pain to take away my dreams. Once I become a CRNA, hopefully the physical demands won't be so bad. The worst part is that my Dad, who is a doctor, has convinced his side of the family that I'm just wanting attention and that I'm a hypochondriac. He and I don't see eye to eye anyway about my recent marriage. However, I owe my husband my life and he has made me so happy :) If it weren't for him, I probably would be dead. I feel bad for complaining so much to him and since he's not suffering like this (although he's in fairly bad shape) he doesn't know how I feel. I've just learned to take one day at a time. thanks for reading :) and good luck to all of you guys

I haven't read all the comments yet, but I will.
I have RA for 25 yrs. I have taken a multiple of different drugs. The one helping the most is Remicade infusion every 6 weeks.

Methrexate injections, however, scarred my lungs (one of the side effects)and now I am on oxygen. Not because of the drug, but probably because of the RA. Tests coming up on 2-3-11

I have recently(8 MONTHS AGO) been told I have RA. I have taken gluten out out of my diet each time I allow myself gluten, the next day my joints are all swollen and painful. For the most part my RA is under control WITHOUT MEDICATION.I have researced this and found that there is a link between RA and gluten. Look for yourself and decide.

I have had JRA since the age 11. I'm 39 now and wonder if they will ever even come up with a cure. I feel so bad, and sad for everyone writting on this site. I guess I've had it for so long now I dont have a whole lot of faith that things will change. But, when I read that some of you have not had it very long or just found out you have it, it breaks my heart. Keep your heads up and dont give up. Because of my disease and multiple surgeries with this disease, 7 years ago I tried to commit suicide. Pretty selfish and stupid on my part.
So many harsh meds, please be careful and read what the doctors are really suggesting you take. I think Ive been on everything under the sun. Now Ive decided how hard it may be im taking my own healthcare into my own hands. Any advice from anyone? I'm just plain exhausted from all the drugs and depression. I hope the best for all you in your furtures with this beast of a disease.

I have RA, gout, fibromyalgia, sciatic nerve pain in my back, and feet problems so baf I can barely walk. I also havekidney failure, caused by high blood pressure). I'm not on dialysis yet, but I've lost at least 50% of my kidney function. Because of this I can't take any kind of pain medication that works. I get so depressed, nurting, hurting, HURTING! And there's NOTHING I can do about it! HELP!

Some TENS units are far more effective than traditional units. The difference is the number of leads (2 vs 4), the range of frequencies (typically 300-500HZ vs .01-10,000.00) and number of frequencies accessed by program.

Also, a combination of TENS unit, diet, supplementation, acupuncture, exercise, bed and other lifestyle choices offers a far better prognosis when recommended by a health care specialist who has expertise in all of these areas.

I have RA & OA.... take MTX, Humira and Folic Acid....at times Celebrex for those tough times. We recently bought a Temprapedic matress. Now I sleep pain free, no pressure to those shoulder and hip joints, with better sleep, I am less tired to continue my water areobics and walking exercises, and just living each day. This has been the best help ever......a great night's sleep is better than any pain remedy on the market. It cost more than other besd, but is so worth the feeling of healing rest. We try so many things to make the pain go for a little while, sleep is so important to help our bodies. Along with what works, sleep is # 1 to keeping ahead of the pain. I am not a sales person, just another pain suffer and RA lifer !!

I have tried so hard not to let this pain get to me. I have had RA for years now and the pain is getting depressing. Even heavy duty pain killers are not helping. It is mostly my hands and wrists. I type a lot and play my keyboard as excersize for my hands. Does anyone else have any suggestions?

Hi everyone, I was dianosed with RA earlier this year after my doc couldnt explain my swollen arm and severe pain, then the fingers started & were so swollen and stiff I couldnt tie my own hair! But I am only 39 ( well actually 21 at heart) with 2 beautiful young daughters and an amazing supportive husband. So I am not going to let this get the better of me! life is too short to mope. for those who want to know,I am on 7 Methotrexate tabs weekly, folic acid, omega 3 suppliments,etc.. But this site really helped me. The first time I could share my story with people who know what I am going through.Thank you and Good luck everyone.

Hi everyone,
After reading all these comments I empathize with all of you, I have been through bouts of depression and feeling hopeless and alone as well. It is sometimes very difficult for family to understand how you feel. I would not wish this disease on anyone (RA). I am on sulfasalazine and take folic acid as well, I also am taking MSM 1,000 mg twice a day. That has helped me greatly. It is a natural derivative of tree sap and I checked to make sure it was compatible with my medication. The other thing I want to stress is this, I believe that my RA was caused by a very stressful and painful divorce, and until recently I was having a very difficult time, but I started a Bible study and instead of asking why me? I started saying "why not me?" . What can I learn from having this disease, yes, it is difficult, but I also started waking up each day and thanking God for loving me, slowly but surely it started to have an effect on how I felt. I am not out of pain, I am not in re-mission, but I feel better than I ever have. I believe that God loves me, despite this disease, things happen, and I know that if He so desired I would be healed, instead, I am taking it one day at a time and living my life to the fullest I possibly can. Start simple, wake up everyday and say "Thanks God for loving me". And try the MSM you can buy it most anywhere, look for purity, but I get mine at Wal-Mart, it doesn't cost a lot, but I noticed a decrease in pain and stiffness when I started taking it. Make sure you check with a Pharmacist or Dr. to see if it is compatible with other meds you are taking. God Bless you all and I will be praying for all of you, keep faith and hope alive in your hearts.

I had Rheumatic fever at age 12 and then Junenile Rheumatid Arthritis until the age of 18. After being in pain most of my teen age years, I went to college and began swimming a lot. The arthritis completely disappered. Then when I turned forty it reappeared in many joints. I could not walk without limping in pain, much less dance which I loved. I was given lots of medication by a Rheumatologist but decided to try Polarity Therapy (a type of enrgy bodywork), physical therapy, psychotherapy, meditation and visualization, and alot of Vitamin C. I was well again in six months of doing the above regimen very regularly. At the age of sixty, I have some minor OA in my hands, but I have abused my hands as a sculptor. I continue to Meditate, have Polarity Therapy, and do a viaualizationevery day. You can manage this painand feel good again. Good Luck!

I've started off with juvenile arthritis when i was about 12 years old when I turned 18 they told me I had RA. I'm 23 years old now and I've tried everything. Voltaren sulfasalazine methrotrexate remicade enbrel and rituxan. It's been about almost 3 years since i've been able to walk. I just recently replaced both my hips cause they were really damaged and thought that it would help but it didn't now the pain Is at my ankles elbows wrist and knuckles. I'm on pain medication everyday and on 40 mg of prednisone everyday and been on steroids since i was 16. I feel like I'll never walk again and i'm tired of being a burden to everyone around me the pain has caused me to feel depressed and now taking antidepressants. I pray to god for a better day and for strength but there are others out there that have it worst for me. I just really wanna get off my crutches and be some sort of use to my family. They've been there since day one and I wanna repay them for there loving kindness especially my mother. Without her I don't think I'd be able to live right now. Always telling me to pray to god and telling me i will see a better day. I wanna walk I wanna have use in my family and I wanna get better. But to me that's like asking to fly without wings. I hope there comes a better day as for now the RA is winning this battle and has been for the last 10 years. I try to stay active but just moving is a pain level of 10. Out of a month I probably have goods days of 5 and the others are just dreadful. Please help me god. And thanks for listening. Sorry it was long.

I have so much pain all over my body all the time. I was diagnosed about a year ago. Fully diagnosed and treated about a month ago. I will just stand there and feel the pain in almost every joint..one by one i can feel the pressure and the pain building up. I cant stand it. I have four children to raise and i can hardly get myself out of bed in the morning. My daughter has to help me. I have to use a cane when i leave the house and even sometimes in the house. I have family that come and help with my daily chores. If it were not for them i dont know what i would do, but i am so pissed at these doctors for not wanting to give the pain medication. I know that there are healing processes like diet, meditation, and other things like that but i have tried those things and believe me when i am helpless in the morning for hours, meditation is not going to do anything. I get pissed at these doctors because they are so afraid to give the analgesic pain relievers. Some people need that medicine to get through the day. Isnt that what it is there for? I suffer so much throughout the day and i cannot find a single doctor to regularly give me the medication. But then there are people i know that get it for other reasons and sell it on the street but here i am and i need it and cant get it at all.

Hi - I was diagnosed with RA 6yrs ago. I was on Methotrexate pill and injection and it went into remission. Its back worse than it was before. I am afraid to go back on the meds because of the side effects. I have stomach and heart problems because of them and do not want any more. I heard that moving to where it is warm helps can anyone tell me if that is true. I suffer the worst in the winter, when i go outside the pain gets even worse. I would like my life back and I was hoping to get better with out the poison. I just keep praying!

I have had severe RA for 23 years and looking back I had some symptoms many years before.
I am on many medications including predisone and Embrel.
I have been reading up and looking for natural alternatives for all these years.
Like many I found that fish oil really helps and much to my amazement a friend recommended something new on the market and gave me a couple of samples and found relief form the pain and sore muscles.
Chemical free stickers that work like acupuncture.
When I try something natural I look at it like this -- if it helps great if not nothing poisonous has entered my system.
I have also found that a juice from the acie berry works wonders as well but not one bought over the counter.
I found that water exercises and swimming help as well as prayer.
GOD Bless and I wish everyone all the best,
Rae

I have had RA for 18 years now. I am 63 now and since my diagnosis in 1991 I have had 29 surgeries, including two shoulder replacements. I have been on Enbrel, Humira(twice), Remicade, Orencia and Zimponi. I take Arava and Vicodin for relief of the pain. My last surgery was a below the knee amputation of my right foot due to a staph infection after surgery. Thank God I have good family and friend support. I wouldn't have made it this far without that.

Like Arlene, my knees were so bad in my late twenties that I was having them aspirated and injected with prednisone with only temporary relief. Then I read a book by Jonathan Wright, MD, in which he cited a study by a Dr. Kaufmann, around 1950, using niacinamide,a B vitamin available in healthfood stores, for degenerative arthritis of the knees. He stated that it could take up to a few months to work. I immediately started taking 500mg. per day, and within one week I was walking the steep hill by my house with no problems. When I stop taking it, my problem gradually returns. My daughter, who is adopted, also has had bad knee pain, and she too finds great relief from niacinamide.

I was diagnosed with RA in 2003. Of course, sought treatment and prescription drugs without health insurance. And I received relief and a portion of my life back.
My sister referred me to an acupuncture physician. I had acupuncture treatments over the course of 3 months and felt tremendous relief. One year later I am off of all my meds and walked a marathon in Hawaii for the arthritis foundation in Sarasota, FL.
I was so inspired that I now have a Master of Science in Oriental Medicine and I am a board certified acupuncture physician with a practice locally.
You can have your life back!

I've had severe Rheumatoid Arthritis for 39 years. In 1985, I took a class called a new image and the teacher came up after class and gave me a brochure of a Feldenkrais Practioner who helped her. She said because of back pain & several surgeries she used to walk like me. Really??? I saw Marty Weiner. He gave me back my life and more. I reversed the need for C-1, C-2 fusion surgery which the doctors told me was impossible. The last of my seven surgeries for RA was in 1984- Double Knee replacements which are still in good condition.

I have had RA for 15 yrs. I could hardly get out of bed and needed help dressing. Now after taking Methotrexate and Humaira and water aerobics I am better. I now am a nationally certified group instructor, teaching water, cycle, pilates, yoga, weights and whatever, anything that doesn't involve jumping around too much.

I too enjoy the warming mitts. They are very soothing and feel good. I am 52 and have had RA for 17 years. I am on NSAIDS and methotrexate and have been for years. I feel good most of the time, and I thank God for that every day. I wish I could get off my meds, but my rheumy says I can't. Recently, I've been feeling great because I lost 15 lbs. and I've been alternating between walking and the elliptical 5 days a week. You can't stop moving, and we can't give up.

I have had RA and Fibro for many, many years. I am taking methotrexate and Humira. Most often this helps greatly, but I have a few sinus infections each year and have to stop these meds until the infection clears up. With this last infection, the meds are much slower getting me back on track. I ALWAYS have the fibro pain. I am a school bus driver so I cannot take my pain meds during work hours. I do take Darvocet when I get home at the end of the day. Winter is extremely hard on me. I'm thinking that before long I will have to be on disability. I LOVE my job so I am not looking forward to this. I do take warm water exercise classes. Nothing touches the fibro.

I recently purchased warming mitts meant for manicures at a local beauty suply store, and they work great for my arthritis pain and stiffness. There are two separate mitts connected to a plug and it works like a heating pad. You simply rub your favorite lotion into your hands, put your hands into a plastic bag (to make "moist heat"), and put them on your hands like oven mitts. It feels great, and makes your hands soft(not very expensive either)! Hope it works for you!

I was diagnosed with RA 8 years ago. Iniatially, I was treated by a Rhumetologist. However, I prayed and in 2008 walked a 26.2 marathon with a sign on my back that said "God healed me of RA". My sister had RA so bad that she lost her eyesight and had replacement, two knee operations, hands operations and now needs an operation on her back. She used the same medications as I ued in the past. Even though I have occasionally a flare-up, overall I cling to my healing. My diet is vegetables and some fish. God is good.

I have found reike treatments to be very helpful. After a learning session or two you can treat yourself, so there is no further cost incurred. Check your local community colleges for courses given.

I'm 48 and have had RA for 15 years. Methotrexate got me out of bed and Enbrel gave me my life back. However, in addition, forcing myself up, getting dressed and even just walking around the block (in orthodic supported tennis shoes)with my "4 legged trainer" helped get me back on my feet. The other saving grace is warm water arthritis classes. It keeps my range of motion in good shape, eases the pain and gives me a support group at the same time! Don't forget to give yourself a break...nobody is as hard on us then ourselves.

I have had RA for 27 years. I am now 33, so I really don't know what life is like without it. As with the suggestions above, I find a positive attitude can make quite a difference. I think about it this way: I did not choose Arthritis, but I CAN make choices to help myself by whatever means neccessary. I educate myself with treatments available and then I try them, irregardless of cost. I figure it's my health, and the investment in my well-being is worth the price. Patience and being at peace with yourself will come with time. I wish everyone the best days ahead!

I was having a lot of pain in my feet, and was even considering quitting work and going on disability. A new Podiatrist placed me on Flector pain patches. They are a prescription pain reliver. You place the patch directly on the pain site and leave it in place for 12 hours. I have gone from thinking about disability to being able to walk a mile or more at a time 4 days per week. What a difference. I have also used the patches on my shoulder and elbows. They really work.

I highly recommend yoga. Some people find Tai Chi Chaun helpful too. If you are in too much pain to do yoga, see a rheumatologist to get drugs to manage the arthritis first. Then start with beginner yoga. You can get books or videos from the library. Do the easy poses first and save the difficult poses for when you are feeling better. I was able to decrease my medication after faithfully doing yoga daily. I feel even better if I do yoga twice a day (morning and evening). Even a few minutes will help.

I have had RA for over 5 years. I found a natural product called Inholtra that really helps. I contains the Omega-3 and other things that help. I buy it off of the web, just type in Inholtra and it will give you sites that sell it. I usually go to the one that has the lowest price. But don't go to MotherNature's site as they messed up my order twice. I have never had to take any chemicals to help with my RA.

My Pain gets to be so bad without pain meds that I can't even get up to do any of this stuff. Every joint in my body gets stiff and it hurts to walk or open my hands the pain runs down into my arms and legs!! It is such a bad feeling that I went from not even wanting to take any pills to not even being able to get out of bed without a pain pill. The worst part of all this is me only being 29 years old. Thanks Alice

My mom finds great relief from omega-3s for pain relief as fish oil (EPA+DHA) is natural anti-inflammatory. She uses Nordic Naturals -a mainstream quality brand that can be bought at your local vitamin stores or online through authorized retailers such as World of Omega - http://www.worldofomega.com.

She also takes GLME - Green Lipid Mussel Extract products which also seem to help.
