So, let me get this clear. So far no one really knows what causes RA and
there isn't a medication out there that is working and is safe to use but
now a vaccine that will prevent RA.
This is such crap! The worst part is there will be people that fall for
this.
People remember Vioxx, it was so safe, the miracle pill that got rid of
pain and was safer than ibprofen, but wait, not for long, it turned out
that in fact it wasn't safe at all and had to be pulled from the market.
RA can be treated with diet and life style changes. You want a healthy
immune system, not one that is compromised because of all the chemicals
they put in these vaccines.
Vaccines have not been proven to be safe or effective.

I am 70 years old and have had RA for about 4 years. I am taking
methotrexate but no biologics. So far my RA is sometimes troublesome but
bearable.
I am trying to decide whether to get the shingles vaccine, which is a live,
attenuated vaccine. Two doctors have said to get the vaccine, two others
have said not to get it. I am confused.
We all know that methotrexate suppresses the immune system, but we also
know that shingles is a dreadful disease, so painful that some victims have
considered suicide. The shingles vaccine is not recommended for people with
a compromised immune system.
So my question is: Does methotrexate suppress the immune system so much
that it would be dangerous to get the shingles vaccine?
Thanks for any help.

In may 2011 will be a Conference or a Congress about RA in England .There
they will speak also about this vaccin.Maybe is someone who can find out
something about it.

This is horse sheit, complete and utter. Let's stop perpetuating this
ridiculousness. And for heaven's sake, if some Mengele angel of death wants
you to be a part of these trials, run far, far away.
What's not mentioned here is how the vaccine is made and what result they
are expecting. The "vaccine" is made from the patient's white cells,
tagging cells with steroids, Vit D, and unnamed "chemicals." Anyone reading
this should be concerned that "chemicals" are not being identified--to
ANYONE. Additionally, the response that is hoped for/expected is a
SUPPRESSION OF THE IMMUNE SYSTEM. Color me unimpressed. So, basically, the
vaccine is only expected at best to suppress the immune system.
Immunosuppression is NOT A CURE. This isn't cancer and you can't compare
the two. Current DMARD treatment gets the same result in most cases, and
many patients on long-term treatment begin to lose efficacy from DMARD
treatment. Not to mention the side effects, including increased infections,
some of which may be life-threatening. Older patients on DMARD therapies
may have increased risk of death from these infections, and anyone on
immunosupressive treatments are at increased risk of malignancies after the
five year mark.
As a health care provider AND a patient with juvenile onset RA/OA for more
than 40 years now, there is no cure and this is false hope for patients. I
went through my own experimental treatments (without my or my family's
permission, I might add), and although the treatment induced a 15 year
remission and greatly reduced damage, it was not a cure. I'm now in deep
trouble physically, and I've exhausted my conventional treatment options
because of side effects.
There is no grand conspiracy against finding a cure; the problem lies in
that no one still knows WHY it occurs and what the actual mechanisms are
behind the inflammatory process in patients. Knowing this is crucial to a
real cure that doesn't just knock out the immune system, which you NEED to
LIVE. In fact, the idea that the immune system in RA is simply overactive
is an incredibly outdated paradigm; the reality is so much more complicated
than this.
The best treatments we have, you all know about. Additional help includes
ultrasound therapy, splinting, hydrotherapy, PT/OT, weight control, diet
control (pts may respond immunologically to gluten, corn, saturated fats,
almost anything...many providers won't encourage the elimination diet, but
you can experiment on your own), and rest alternated with realistic
exercise (ROM exercises are a MUST).
I've been through so many decades now of false hope, and when the same
unproven ideas are repeated over and over again, it's hard not to speak
out, particularly being in health care. RA isn't hopeless, but there is no
miracle cure around the corner. Living with RA is hard enough; don't put
your hopes in a cure, nor accept the snake-oil statements that people "get
rid" of their RA with a certain diet, weight loss, etc.

Please put me on a Rheumatoid Arthritis mailing list. Also, I would like to
make a financial contribution to RA studies with the new vaccine. Please
tell me where I can find a RA support group in the Boston, Ma, USA, area.
Where do I send financial support for new RA vaccine study?
Thank you kindly.

foods to avoid when you have RA?
Oxalic Acid in spinach?
I've read about peppers and recently had my first bout of hand AR at 53 by
having eaten a large amount of peppers. Also read against potatoes.
What other vegetables and fruits are triggers??

I am a pediatrician immunologist and I examined many sever cases of JRA
treated with allot of drugs and still they are suffering ;if a RA vaccine

I have had RA for 20 years and have been on every drug imaginable. None of
the drugs that I have been on for Ra has had any lasting affect. I was on
Enbrel for 5 years but side-effects caused to get off it. Currently, I am
on antibiotic therapy. It has only been 7 months so I continue to wait and
see. A vaccine would be welcome news for those in my position whose
futures look a little bleak. There must be a way to turn off the
autoimmune switch. I remain hopeful.

Our daughter just diagnosed with Severe JIA. We are excited to see that
there is on going studies. We are really overwhelmed this week and would
love to receive any info on clinical studies, support groups, information
on medication. I beleive that together people can do anything. We just
need a path. This is now our path!

I had JRA as a child from the age of 8. My JRA went into "remission" at
the age of 15. I was lucky in the fact that I was a huge athlete growing
up and my JRA wasn't as painful as it would've been had I not been so
athletic. At the age of 25, after my third child, the RA came back with a
vengence. Now, at the age of 31, I'm being told that the next step is a
total hip replacement. I'm seeking other options in Nashville to try and
"put off" the replacement as long as possible. I'm all about the trials,
especially the new polymers out there to "replace" cartilage. Good luck to
you all and don't give up. My daughter has JRA now and just keeping her
active and on a regular excercise program has helped more than anything, so
far.

I am on the antibiotic protocol and almost completely symptom free. Anyone
interested in truly getting rid of the symptoms of pain and swelling should
at least try it. Look up road back foundation on your computer search and
read the book The New Arthritis Breakthrough by Henry Scrammel. It is
recommended by some very respected physicians. Find out for yourself. In
this country you have to be your own advocate as the physicians are usually
going to only tell you about things like methotrexate and the biologics if
that does not work. Both have too many side effects...

My daughter developed the Ra at 18 years old after having her 1st birthday,
she is now 21. she has it in every joint and suffers really badly, she
feels isolated too as she doesn't know of anyone else with it and doesn't
ge out much due to the pain. She would love to be a part of the research to
cure RA. She is with me now but her hands and fingers are so swollen and
painful she cannot type.
