Inflammation and Foods That Fight It

Cancer, heart disease, obesity – these are three of the most common serious health problems in the United States. Know what they may all have in common with rheumatoid arthritis? Inflammation. That’s right, the same inflammation that causes arthritis may cause other health problems, and your diet can play a big role in helping all those conditions.

Scientists know that the enzymes cyclooxygenase-1 (COX-1) and 2 (COX-2) cause inflammation; that’s why you may take medications – such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, which block COX-1 and COX-2 enzymes, or COX-2 inhibitors – to treat your arthritis. Researchers have learned that COX-2 enzymes become more active and cause more inflammation when you take in more omega-6 fatty acids than omega-3 fatty acids.

Omega-6 fatty acids are found in corn, sunflower, safflower, soybean and cottonseed oils and are prevalent in many snack foods, fried foods, margarines and other spreads. (They’re also in egg yolks and meats.) In fact, many of the foods that people overindulge in during “snack attacks” are linked to increasing inflammation and obesity. Interestingly, inflammation is connected to obesity – and obesity to arthritis – because fat cells can produce cytokines (proteins that encourage inflammation).

Are there diets for inflammation? What can you do? Eat more veggies, fruit, nuts, tea and even dark chocolate. Many plant-based foods contain antioxidants and phytochemicals, both of which may decrease the activity of the COX-2 enzyme, reducing inflammation. And don’t forget to load up on omega-3 fatty acids, found in fish like salmon and tuna.

I have had RA for a number of years. I have been on the whole range of drugs. Finally I agreed to go on Enbrel. I didn't want to due to the risks associated with this drug. After 3 months of injecting myself once a week I developed severe flu-like symptoms. I could barely get out of bed. I called Enbrel and they told me "No flu-like symptoms are not a side effect." So I continued with the medication. When I could barely walk I did some research and found a warnning online on Medincinenet that said "If you develop severe flu-like symptoms call your doctor."

All these drugs are very toxic to my body so I am trying to limit my food intake to simple foods. Hopefully I can get off all gluten, milk, etc.

For me personally I am not going to risk getting lumphoma or fungal pneumonia from taking Enbrel. This is MY experience and may not be yours.

Hi, I have been on my journey for 5 years now since being diagnosed with Pysoratic Arithritis. Since day one, I have taken ownership of the problem and therefore the consequences of taking any "Pain Relieving" drugs on my long term health. e.g. methotrexate e.t.c What is absolutely clear from talking to many with various SYMPTOMS, arithritis, Multiple Sclerosis e.t.c. is that they are just that, a SYMPTOM of the root cause, which appear in different forms depending on your unique body and your diet. My journey has taken me worldwide, countless visits to doctors and finally natural physicians, for lack of a better description. what is clear, Diet is the number one cause of disease, be it gluten intolerance, lactose, nightshade food group e.t.c. after many years of pain and refusing to take any drugs, i am pain free, though not totally rid of the root cause, i slowly working towards removing the inflammation from my body caused by toxins through food.

Hi all, may I suggest that people going to use Enbrel research quite alot before taking as research shows that it can cause alot of problems later on those including Parkinsons Disease. I am 20 and have had RA since i was 15 I have been on Plaquenil, Arava, Methotrexate, Naprosyn and others that I forget the name of (all at high doses) I am now starting a natural treatment that I recomend people try also as the medication doctors are giving out willy nilly is to benifit the problem they are required to treat not the rest of your body that the medication it harming!!! Everyone needs to think twice and try the natural alternative atleast once.

Gabby- I have been on Enbrel for 6 years, and have had good relief from it. Recently, my RA has gotten worse, even with Enbrel, and I started methotrexate with it. I'm hopeful the combination will do the trick for now!

I was dx this yr with RA. My Sed Rate, CRP, was greatly elevated. My ANA was elevated also. I've been dx with Sjogren syndrome as well. Pain, tired, swelling,& flu like symptoms are no fun. I'm desperate for foods or any remedy to help me feel better. I;m 50yrs old and it appears I've had this for some time but just ignored joint swelling, redness, tenderness, extreme fatigue. HELP! Just tell me I'll be ok.

I was having significant myalgias, joint pain, and stiffness - primarily in my extremeties. When I stopped eating gluten-containing products my symptoms went away.

Although I still have osteo-arthritis in a hip (due to an old injury)I am feeling much better. I've eliminated all foods that contain gluten, including "hidden sources" such as soy sauce and marinades.

The difference has been remarkable in three months.

I had an extremely hi RF count. I didn't want to go on steroids (with all the side effects). For over 10 years I expected that I would eventually be in a wheelchair.) When my physician retired I went to a rheumatologist. He also did all the lab work and told me that I did not have rheumatoid arthritis. I have sjogrens. My new physician tells me that because my rf is hi doesn't necessarily mean that I have rheumatoid arthritis. After all these years it seems like a miracle not to have RF.

Is there a link between food allergies and RA. about two years ago I started going into anaphalytic shock with foods and found out I am highly allergic to many foods and now some medications. I was recently tested for Autoimmune Disorders and came back with a high RF 100.6. I am very suspicous of the RA and Allergies are related but which one came first.

Any one else having these crazy and painful events.
