Living with Psoriatic Arthritis: Karl Zimmer

People with Psoriatic Arthritis discuss their journey to diagnosis and treatment.

By Bill Sanders

Karl Zimmer, 40
Diagnosed at:
35
Currently taking: Enbrel injections
The back story: Karl’s joints began swelling when he was in his mid 20s. He self-medicated with up to 20 aspirin per day. Eventually he developed psoriasis, mild at first, on his scalp, around his ears, then on his shin and ankles.
A word of warning: Have good insurance.
A word of encouragement: With the right medicine, you can get better.

In his own words:

I wrestled and played football in college so when I had achy joints and swelling, I thought it was just the result of that. I didn’t have health insurance at the time, so I didn’t go to the doctor. I just took lots of aspirin every day. When I started getting psoriasis, I finally went to a general practitioner. She put me in a gown and got me on the table and said right away, “You have an acute, classic case of psoriatic arthritis.” Dr. [Christopher] Ritchlin, my rheumatologist, would later tell me that I was the perfect specimen of psoriatic arthritis.

My insurance company … made me exhaust every other effort before Dr. Ritchlin could put me on Enbrel. I was on Celebrex for a couple of months, then Mobic, then Vioxx, then sulfasalazine. Finally, they put me on Enbrel and within two days my pitted nails cleared up and my skin got better. Within two weeks, almost all of my pain was gone. I could jump up in the air. I took steps two at a time. I was back to playing softball and running.

Before Enbrel, it would take 45 minutes to shower and get dressed, and that was in extreme pain. I was almost out of hope.

My insurance company has made me go off Enbrel. The psoriasis is back on my eyebrows and the pain is coming back. I’m back up to five Aleve every morning. I’m trying to do whatever it takes to get back on the medicine that worked. It is very expensive and my insurance company doesn’t think I should be on it for extended periods of time, even though my doctor does.

I feel for everyone suffering from SA. I was diagnosed one year ago at the age of 47 and never knew it could get this bad! I hurt so bad, mostly fform fingers to elbows and feet to hips. I have been on several meds but nothing has worked so far. Latest is now Humira; Methotrexate; celebrex and cymbalta!!!. I had two good days and that was GREAT but now I am back to not being able to dress myself. Depression is high with being in constant pain and the inability to do just minor daily things. It's good to have others that share my struggles. Thanks

I was diagnosed with RA one year ago, and have been taking the DMARDs as prescribed. My hands & feet do not bother me, but my hips and knees do. I have already had one hip replacment, and feel that I will soon need another, then my knees etc.. Is this psoratic arthritis? All I want to do is walk! Hopefully, the golf course, or with my Grandchildren. Did anyone experience this type of rapid degeneration.

Karl: I will be praying that you can get back on Embrel asap! This medicine works, I got Psoriatic Arthritis in my middle 30's; but for a good 6-9 months, doctors abused me, until my wife took me to see a specialist and that is when I was diagnosed with this type of arthritis. I have tried all medicine on the market and to me, Embrel is the #1 medicine....yes it is expensive, I will agree with you, but have patience and I will put you on my prayer list for you and all other patients that have this bad illness to get better. God Bless..

I am fighting with my insurance company AGAIN. I was prescribed Humira and it took over a month to get "pre-approved". I took one injection and was allergic!! My doctor has now prescribed Enbrel and right back fighting insurance, which I am sure will take at least another month. They don't care if you are in pain and they don't care that you pay your premiums on time and don't care that you NEED the medication! I am taking a pain killer at night to just take the edge off so I can stand to lie down!! I hate hearing that the insurance company can set a time limit for me to be on necessary prescribed medication - I guess that will be my next hurdle!!

Interesting how an insurance company are allowed to think they know better than your specialist doctor! Shouldn't be allowed!!
