Restless Legs Syndrome Doubles Risk of Stroke and Heart Disease

People with restless legs syndrome are twice as likely to have a stroke or heart disease compared with people without the condition, and the risk is greatest among those with the most frequent and severe symptoms, according to the largest restless legs syndrome study to date.

The study involved 3,433 men and women enrolled in the Sleep Heart Health Study, a large prospective cohort study of adults age 40 and older designed to investigate obstructive sleep apnea and other sleep-disordered breathing as risk factors for the development of cardiovascular disease. Participants were diagnosed with restless legs syndrome by detailed questionnaire and were asked if they had been diagnosed with a variety of systemic diseases including cardiovascular disease and cerebrovascular disease. Of the participants, nearly seven percent of women and three percent of men had restless legs syndrome.

Restless legs syndrome is a neurological condition characterized by the irresistible urge to move the legs, particularly when at rest.  Although the relationship is unclear, restless legs syndrome is often associated with fibromyalgia and some other forms of arthritis and related conditions.

The new restless legs syndrome study does not show that the condition causes cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease, but a number of potential mechanics for such a process exist, says study author John W. Winkelman, MD, PhD, of Harvard Medical School. “In particular, most people with RLS have as many as 200 to 300 periodic leg movements per night of sleep and these leg movements are associated with substantial acute increases in both blood pressure and heart rate, which may, over the long term, produce cardiovascular or cerebrovascular disease.”

Dr. Winkelman says there are limitations to the restless legs syndrome study, including that the diagnosis was self-reported via questionnaire rather than by clinical interview. The study was published in Neurology.

I have problems with my legs. Example lifting things, mowing the lawn. I start to sweat profusely, tremble, weakness, a little pain in my legs and the color drains from my face, I feel like I am going to pass out if I do not immediately sit down. This also happens when I walk up and down stairs(11 stairs) twice in a row . I do not have the excruciating pain that doctors associate with arterial problems. This has left me unable to do anything strenuous ad I am hoping someone can give me some idea what it could be. I have been seeing doctors for over a year.

Thank you for the great article. I believe I have this problem, but do not wish to go to a doctor. I have had alot of health issues since the beginning of the fall last year. I am still seeing doctors and having things done to me to help get this done. Since all of this had started, I have noticed that when sitting somewhere, I will begin pumping my legs. I did not think there were any medicines that would stop this. Besides that, I am currently taking a pharmacy every morning so I will pass on this till such time they allow me to work myself off the medicines I am taking now.

I have had restless legs for many years. I have only been on one drug from the beginning and it helps me tremendously. Klonopin. Among many things it is used for it is also an anti seizure medicine. However, with a very small dose of .25 mg at night it has been a miracle for me. Sometimes if I have been on my feet alot I can take 2. I hope this may help someone.

I have suffered with Rheumatoid arthritis, fibroymylgia and RLS, currently I do not take any medications for these conditions only because of the side effects and after 6 or 8 months the meds stop working for me. I am only taking some vitamins but now it seems that this is not working. I looked up RA and FM in this issue and saw all the vitamins that one needs to take to help but financially I cannot afford all of these vitamins! I would love just one miracle pill for all three of my conditions. Along with RA, FM and RLS, I also have itching on my elbows, knees and ankles (off and on), rosecea and at times depression.

RLS has been identified in the past through a sleep study. RLS has plaged me for yrs while watching TV or in a class. Eventually, if I don't get out of the chair & move, I feel as if I will vomit. While this is coming on I keep squirming in the chair. About a yr ago I started moving as if being pulled by a puppeteer while sleeping. Violently, my legs would pump up & down--getting out of bed stopped it for awhile. Next, I jerked & jumped as if I had a severe "tick." I have been sent back to my Pulmonologist by a Neurologist. No help yet. Doubled Requip in a.m. & p.m. Take 12000mgs of Gabapentin am thru bedtime for itching. This occursONLY when I lie down to sleep or when something disturbs me (I think). Suggestions?
