Milk Is Part of a Good Gout Diet

There’s a new gout diet in town – and you may be surprised. A study in the New England Journal of Medicine reports that milk and other dairy foods, as well as certain purine-rich vegetables, don’t contribute to gout and are acceptable gout foods.

The research, part of the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study, found that drinking milk could actually reduce a person’s risk of developing gout by as much as 43 percent. Beans, peas, mushrooms, spinach and cauliflower, all on the gout foods blacklist because of their purine content, were exonerated by the study, which found they did not appear to be a factor in developing gout.

The study did support the traditional gout diet prescription to limit red meat and seafood – an extra portion of meat each day increased the risk of developing gout by 21 percent, and an extra serving of seafood raised the risk by seven percent.

Arthritis runs in my mothers family from aunts to cousins to nieces. I suspect that is the reason I have gout in my right foot. I have several questions on how I can relive my pain. Will cherries or cherry juice help? and Does my weight (approx 220lbs) affect my flair ups? I love light soymilk. Will it hurt or harm me.

My 24 year old down syndrome son had bouts of gout UNTIL he started drinking milk. I bought these little containers of milk and he loved them so much, he started drinking a lot of milk when he was having an attack one day and we could not believe how QUICKLY his gout disappeared! Within one day of drinking milk his gout completely disappeared. He was actually running when the day before he had to scoot on the floor to the bathroom. NEVER has his gout gone so quickly. I make sure he drinks a full glass of milk each day now. I wasn't sure it was the milk, we just suspected it was because of his quick recovery which never never never happened before. We were stunned and looked at each other and said, could it have been the milk?? That was the only difference from other attacks which lasted weeks. I still don't know, but I do know he is doing great, no gout at all and he's drinking milk every day which is the only difference in his diet.

I suffer from gout. And milk and cherries both help me deal with gout. Milk helps remove/fight the build up of the uric acid in the body. Cherries (a natural anti-inflammatory) help to reduce the swelling and inflammation.
I am not a doctor - I just know that it works better and faster than any medication from any doctor I have dealt with. If you are having problems with Gout you should try it to see the effects for yourself. It may not work for everyone - I know for a fact that it works for me.

You need to understand that this study has a couple of weaknesses.

First, it's a self-reporting study. People are asked what they eat. They tend to report inaccurately.

Second, it's not a direct correlation study where a number of people are fed a food, then their uric acid levels (this is what matters, purines are NOT what matters, as is demonstrated by the confusion relative to beans) is taken...

How diet effects uric acid level and supersaturation is one part of the gout puzzle. The other is part of the puzzle is kidney function and filtering ability.

And here's a big unknown for ya...how does mass diet coke consumption (6-9 12 oz cans per day) and low water intake effect gout? There's no science, but it'd seem like lower consumption of water combined with the diuretic effects of diet coke (and tea and coffee for that matter) might contribute to supersaturation and thence crystal precipitation.

I am vegetarian since birth but consumed dairy products. For the last 15 years or so a had lower back pain when sitting on a chair too long, sleeping in a wrong posture, picking up something more then 5 Kg etc.. Since six months I cut dairy complete from my diet and my lower back problems vanished. If you had to tell me before it was from dairy I would not have believed it. I stopped using dairy because I did not like the abuse of the animals. As a bonus I also got my back fixed in the process. If you suffer from lower back pain give it a try for 6 months or so, whats to lose. For me, milk sucks....

I am 63 and have had gout and all types of joint pain for many years. Milk is one of the worst things you can drink! Most of the milk we drink is pasteurised and this process, like in pasteurised fruit juices, causes severe acid build up because the pasteurising process converts the milk or fruit sugars which become highly acid forming. Why do they pasteurise, simply to extent the life of the product so manufacturers can make the money. Any preserves like fruit, milk etc which are boiled should be avoided. Finally about milk..Why do cows who have grown up, no longer drink milk? and why do humans persist in drinking this milk? Like most things in life we have those who are just trying to rip us off by supposedly thinking that we are all just morons and have no brain to think and deduse.
I no longer have joint pain, I do not consume dairy products or any pasteurised products, I am a vegan and have only one thing on my shopping list...fresh products no animal products. Good luck and Love, Ray

Can soymilk replace milk? Is it as beneficial as milk and milk products?
