Osteoporosis Medication Side Effects: Countering Coricosteroid-Induced Bone Loss

When arthritis drugs such as prednisone weaken bones, Forteo can help strengthen them

Reducing joint inflammation keeps people with arthritis pain-free and mobile. It also preserves bone health – that is, if certain classes of anti-inflammatory and disease-modifying drugs are used. But when inflammation is brought down with corticosteroid drugs, bones may be harmed. Corticosteroids, such as prednisone, make bones weak because they decrease the amount of calcium absorbed by the intestines, increase the amount excreted through the kidneys and can have a toxic effect on the cells that form bone.

Currently, the bisphosphonates are the standard treatment for corticosteroid-induced osteoporosis, but study published in the New England Journal of Medicine shows that for people with prednisone-induced osteoporosis who are at particularly high risk for fracture, using parathyroid hormone – a bone-formation agent called teriparatide injection (Forteo) – may be a good option. Parathyroid hormone is approved for treating women who develop osteoporosis due to a decline in estrogen after menopause, or for men whose osteoporosis is linked to a hormone deficiency.

In the study of 428 men and women, ages 22 to 89, whose osteoporosis was caused by taking prednisone for three months or longer, bone density of the half who received the daily injections increased by 7.2 percent – twice as much as it did in those who took the alendronate pills (3.4 percent). Those who received the injections also had fewer spine fractures, but, as a side effect, some had periodically elevated blood levels of calcium.

I was on Forteo for over a year, it was very costly, even with good insurance it was around $300. a month. I got very little bone growth, and ran into a kidney stone, parathyroid problem and had surgery, The parathyroid problem is strange, muddled my thinking and othr things. I would say forget it, and stick with one of the other less expensive and so far not so damaging meds. Alendoronate seems ok. I walk miles and miles, make sure to take my calcium,Vitamin D/3,magnisum, a good women's daily vitamin,
do some weights,& strengthening exercises.
Oh yes, I use a product over the counter, that helps joints, there are 2 or 3 advertised regularly. I think it helps.
I used to lay on the floor and cry my hips and hands hurt so badly. I play tennis, ice skate, dance and work part time. I am almost 75 yrs old.It is an on going work in progress, but it has paid off. I was
in my late 30's when I started having trouble, and have just kept trying to do more things as the years have gone on, that are supposed to help. I eat a very healthy diet too, that help build bone. I hope this helps someone . Linda

On a different note, I would like to CAUTION any of you reading the above information that having "Reclast" injected without being aware of your Calcium Levels and your Parathyroid Hormone(PTH)Levels CAN also be dangerous to your health. Because if you are unaware of your levels and/or have a doctor such as I did at the time it was prescribed for me who did NOT tell me that he was aware of me having elevated Calcium Levels and elevated Parathyroid Hormone(PTH) over a period of several years (whenever he chose to order those specific lab tests)which had only been done on a sporadic basis with the results indicating that I probably had a Parathyroid Tumor(i.e. Adenoma-Benign Tumor)which was secreting huge quantities of the PTH hormones into my bloodstream all the time; therefore, creating a multitude of health problems which he never saw fit to diagnose and advise me of.

Having said that I want anyone considering "Reclast" as a treatment option for their Osteopenia/Osteoarthritis disease to KNOW THAT IF YOUR CALCIUM IS ELEVATED INTO THE 10'S (OR HIGHER ON YOUR LAB RESULTS) IT MIGHT VERY POSSIBLY BE AN INDICATION THAT YOU HAVE A TUMOR ON ONE OF YOUR PARATHYROID GLANDS SECRETING EXCESSIVE AMOUNTS OF PARATHYROID HORMONE!

CAUTION!!!! SHOULD BE EXERCISED PRIOR TO HAVING AN IV SOLUTION OF "RECLAST" INJECTED DUE TO THE FACT THAT "RECLAST" IS CONTRAINDICATED--I.E.-DO NOT USE "RECLAST"IN THE PRESENCE OF EVEN THE POSSIBILITY OF AN EXISTING "PARATHYROID TUMOR."

Reclast was used on me under the above circumstances and I experienced a very violent and severe reaction to the action of this drug. My "Reclast" side-effects put me in bed for a total of almost three months and it was over 4 months before I was able to resume what is normal activity for me on a daily basis. I seriously thought I was going to die and had absolutely no recourse or ability to reverse the side-effects I was experiencing because once it is injected as an IV-Solution it cannot be stopped and it has to run its full-course until it is completed. There's not a way to stop its side-effects which are horrific--going to an Emergency Room is of no value as they can do nothing to stop the all consuming pain everywhere in your body, high fevers, chills, grinding teeth, horrible non-stop headaches, total body weakness and etc...too many too list them all.

I am not trying to scare anyone who knows that their lab results for Calcium and/or Parathyroid Hormone are NOT elevated I am only concerned with trying to protect anyone else who might possibly have a Parathyroid Tumor from experiencing the horror of months' of uncontrollable excruciating pain and suffering which I experienced.

Most doctors will tell you that these Parathyroid Tumors occur in only "1 in 100,00 people" but I am here to tell you they are much more common than that and are responsible for many people dying of unexplained or misdiagnosed causes everyday. If you don't believe me checkout, "Parathyroid.com" by Doctor, James Norman, Leading Parathyroid Expert and Surgeon, located in Tampa, FL.

Parathyroid Tumors/Adenomas are responsible for secreting excessive amounts of Parathyroid Hormone(PTH) which causes a quite serious form of Osteoporosis/Osteopenia by leeching the Calcium from all of your body's bones and causing it to circulate throughout your bloodstream where in larger quantities than normally required by the body it causes damage to all of your major organs.

Just be aware that NOT ALL Osteoporosis is caused by being in a Menopausal State like mentioned in this article it can also be caused by the side-effects of having to use Steroidal Drugs over a period of time and that these particular causes can respond favorably to the Bisphosphonate drugs that are available for such treatment of Osteoporosis--be aware, however, that they all can have unpleasant and sometimes possibly harmful side-effects IF you don't carefully follow the dosing instructions.

In case "Bonnie" above should come back to this site, I would like to advise her to make sure to have her Parathyroid Hormone (PTH) levels checked prior to even considering taking "Forteo". Forteo is the Human DNA Equivalent of the Parathyroid Hormone(PTH). Supposing that she most likely still has 3 of her original 4 Parathyroid Glands and that those 3 glands are actively producing a normal quantity of Parathyroid Hormone to maintain control over her Calcium blood levels she might not need or want more PTH circulating in her bloodstream--it can be quite dangerous by damaging not only her kidneys but many of her other major organs. I was told after having a Parathyroid Adenoma Tumor removed by the foremost Parathyroid Expert/Surgeon, James Norman, MD, that too much PTH curculating through my bloodstream could have easily been deadly for me after another Endocrinologist had previously prescribed Forteo for me. I, also, want to mention that this injectable form of PTH is quite expensive with a 30-Day Supply costing at least $600.00 not including the needles to inject it with. You need to have good paying insurance prior to starting on a course of this treatment.

Are there any new developments in stem cells injected into the bone? I read some time ago that research was going on in this procedure in an attempt to get the bone to strengthen/grow.
I currently have fractures in both femurs after taking Fosomax for 9 years.
I really need a treatment that works before the wheelchair is my only solution.

I have spinal stenosis, several degenerated and bulging discs in lumbar, thoracic, and previous cervical discectomy w/fusion 2 level,I just read about Forteo injections and wonder if they would help my spine, but I have also had hi-levels of calcium in my blood which required removal of one (1) parathyroid which had a cyst. The calcium level went back to normal after the surgery. I have contacted doctors, neurosurgeons, orthopedic surgeons, and internist, and it seems that all agree I am not a candidate for surgery, will the Forteo injections possibly relieve the pain? I also take 1500 to 3000 mg. of hydrocodone daily depending on my pain level.
Thank you

I Looked up these bone meds and most are said to be one step away from laundry detergent! No wonder so many side effects! I am borderline osteopenia/osteoporosis in spine but hips great. Sooooo......hard to decide about all these meds on the market. Some big class action suit in canada against Fosomax side effects.

all these medications are poisons and should be avoided. the doctors only care about putting a check next to the diagnosis and gettin you out of the office. when your body falls apart because of the medicine they will say, we told you there could be side effects
