If you’re at risk for osteoporosis, diet is a major concern. To reduce fracture risk associated with osteoporosis, calcium and Vitamin D supplementation are worth considering.
People over 50 who take daily calcium and vitamin D supplements can reduce their risk of fractures by almost one-fourth, according to a new study by Australian researchers. The study, a meta-analysis of 29 studies that collectively tracked the use and effectiveness of calcium and calcium with vitamin D supplements in 63,897 people, was published in the British medical journal The Lancet.
Not surprisingly the greatest reduction in fractures was seen in people who took the supplements most – at least 80 percent – of the time. Taking supplements less often than that cut the benefits in half.
To help prevent osteoporosis, calcium supplementation is important. The optimal time to begin taking the supplements is around 50, when bone loss begins to accelerate, the analysis showed. A regular daily dose of 1,200 milligrams of calcium with 800 international units of vitamin D provided the best therapeutic effect.

One more thing is the pain on my both hands specially on wrist part and fingers. I can't use it normally by holding heavy things and when I'm taking a bath it's difficult for me to scrub my shoulder and other part of my body even shampooing my hair.
Right now, i have pain on my middle finger more on the joints, when I touch it I feel pain.
I'm taking steroids (Medrol 4 mg daily) aside from taking this medicines still I feel discomfort.
What should I do to relieve the pain and what proper exercise I can do to protect the muscle and bones and also to prevent deformity.
thank you.

I am a woman of 46 years of age.
Last week Saturday, I decided to consult my GP and directly asked him to refer me for X-Ray as I was worried about the aching of my bones. My hands would drop the glass or cup while holding it and I was starting to doubt the strength of my legs if I anticipated to drive to KZN from Gauteng. I also felt the cramps on my right leg therefore I would be tired of pressing the accelerator.
That is what triggered me to consult my GP.
The X-Ray depicted reduction of catillage on the joints (Osteoporosis and Arthritis)I amwaiting for the scan appointment to detect the intensity. I recall that my aunt died from "joints illness" she was on the wheelchair and my 55 year old sister has arthritis. I am wodering of my prognosis!!
