Voltaren Gel Offers Rub-On Relief

Topical arthritis treatment may relieve pain with less risk of side effects. Is it right for you?

By Denise Lynne Mann

If you have arthritis in just one or two joints, you may not need to expose yourself to the risks of oral non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) – such as ulcers; stomach upset; or potential heart, kidney or liver problems – in order to achieve some relief. Rubbing an NSAID on your skin is now possible.

The FDA recently approved Voltaren Gel as the first prescription skin gel to treat osteoarthritis (OA) pain. The gel contains diclofenac sodium, an NSAID that is the main ingredient in Voltaren pills.

A prescription topical NSAID is great news for select people with arthritis, says Roy D. Altman, MD, a professor of medicine in the division of rheumatology and immunology at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).

Voltaren Gel may be a good option if:

 • You have arthritis in smaller joints. “The new Voltaren Gel gives patients the ability to apply something topically, which will not give significant blood levels, but will penetrate the skin and help reduce pain,” Dr. Altman says. “Voltaren Gel works as well as its oral predecessor when it comes to joints that are closer to the surface, such as the hands, knees, and perhaps the elbows and ankles.”

In the studies that led to the new gel’s approval, pain levels fell by 46 percent among people with hand OA after they applied Voltaren Gel for six weeks. In a 12-week study of people with knee OA, there was a 51-percent reduction in pain.

You are older than 65. “A lot of elderly patients can’t take oral NSAIDs because they have stomach or heart risk factors, and they can’t take narcotic analgesics because they could become so drowsy they could fall and break a bone,” Dr. Altman says.

 • You want to avoid pills. Some people with OA who want to avoid systemic side effects seek compounding pharmacies, so that they can have their favorite painkiller made into a topical formula. Pharmacists literally can take the medication out of the capsule and make it into a gel – voilà!

“This can be fairly expensive, however, and it can be inconsistent from one batch to another,” says Dr. Altman. “The new gel is less expensive and more consistent than a compounded topical formula. In addition, it comes with disposable dosing strips that show you exactly how much gel to use.” You squeeze the gel onto a card along the line for your dose, wipe the card directly onto your joint and rub it gently into the skin.

Voltaren Gel may not be a good option if:

You also take oral NSAIDs. It’s not that the gel’s active ingredient doesn’t get into your bloodstream – it does, Dr. Altman says. “Some does get absorbed, just substantially less than with a pill,” he says. Specifically, 94 percent less is absorbed from the gel than from its oral counterpart. However, the new gel should not be used in combination with oral NSAIDs or aspirin because of the potential for adverse effects. When used alone, the only real side effects of the topical products are skin reactions where they are applied.

You have several affected joints. “Voltaren Gel works fairly quickly – within a week – but the pill works quicker,” says Dr. Altman. And taking a pill would be a lot easier for someone who has multiple joints affected by arthritis, he says.

I have been using #2 Soothanol, and that helps,(fairly small bottle but comes out real sparingly and that is all you need when you rub it in ) plus chiropractic, which I have been using for years. It all helps. You can look #2 Soothanol up here on the internet.

I have been using Voltaren Gel for the past year. It does give relief; but, I wonder about the hair loss and the thinning, fragile skin that bruises so badly. This week, for the first time, I have had torn skin with bruising. I do worry.

I ordered online from Canada and New Zeland, no prescription needed. Cheap and works great for both OA and Inflammatory Art without any of the usual sides I have experienced from oral NASIDS.

I have arthritis all over my body, but when it started to be severe in my right hand (and I am right handed) I asked my doctor if there was anything I could do for it. I am already on several medications for arhtritis, but apparently my hand did't care. Voltaren Gel was suggested by my doctor and to my surprise, it worked. It didn't take any time at all. The first time I used it it helped releave the pain. No side effects either which for me is wonderful as I have problems with many drugs. Thanks heavens for this drug.

I have used one tube of Voltaren Gel RX over a period of time for OA in a few finger joints. The product worked well,I felt results in the first week of use 4 times daily. I continued use at 4 x daily and eventually backed it down from week to week as my OA swelling backed down. I still have joint damage and stiffness which will be there. But if I have another flair up I know I have my Voltaren Gel to get it under control.

I do have a question as to hair loss, with use of this Gel? I am a healthy 57 year old female with a thick head of hair, my beautician noticed a lot of hair breakage and hair loss/thinning on my forehead hair line. The only Rx I take is Lipitor RX and of course otc vitamines in addition to Voltaren Gel 1%. Has there been problems with hair loss or thinning with the use of this product?

I have moderate to (mostly) severe pain in various parts of my body, including severe degenerative disc disease in my lower lumbar spine, post surgical neurologic pain in my left knee after a total joint replacement, and moderate to severe pain on my left proximal and distal great toe joint and a cracked prosthetic implant installed about 5 years ago, just to name a few of the maladies I must accept to get through the day! I'm on a regimen of oral analgesics, but find the voltaren gel offers a moderate respite from some of the severe pain, particularly when rubbed in the area of my knee joints and great toe joint. It's not a panacea for all of my pain problems, but find it's efficacy is comparable to the use of Lidocane patches. It's the VERY best topical anagesic I've found, and man, I've tried 'em all!

Discuss with your physician to see if Voltaren gel would be appropriate for you, and if so, give it a try. There is currently a discount available on the "Voltaren" website that may make the product more affordable to you.

The best of luck, and may you have many pain free days!

My doctor prescribed Voltaren Gel and I have been using it for 2 weeks on my heel and knees. I have osteo, but he said it usually takes at least 2 weeks up to 6 weeks before seeing results. I have yet to see real results. I will inform you when results become obvious. I was prescribed to use it 4 times a day.

I was just prescribed Volaren Gel and the Pill as well. I used the Voltaren Gel on the way home from the office and it was all I could do to make it to the bed for a long (2 1/2 hr.) nap. I do not think because of my heart and stomach problems that I will be able to use it. It really makes me sad because it immediately took away the pain.
I am somewhat scared of the patient info sheet and the warnings, especially after the
nap I had to take after using it.

voltaren Gel has *NOT* been discontinued. In fact, I just picked up my newest eight tubes today. I have to go to a special pharmacy, but I can get it. This product, combined with my opioid pain killers, gave me the life back that Lupus and Ankylosing Spondylitis stole from me. Now, I am able to stand in the courtroom for hours arguing on behalf of my clients. I appreciate it, and I know they do.
