Gout Triggers

Uric acid levels aren’t the only causes of gout attacks.

A gout attack can be triggered by:

• Joint injury
• Surgery or sudden, severe illness
• Taking certain diuretic medications for high blood pressure, leg swelling (edema) or heart failure
• Chemotherapy
• Starting a uric acid-lowering treatment
• Taking the drug cyclosporine
• Infection
• Crash diets and fasting
• Eating foods high in purines
Dehydration
• Drinking too much alcohol
Drinking sweet sodas

What triggers gout? I have sufferred from severe gout for 30 years and am allergic to allopurinol. I have found that certain things trigger an attack of gout:-
1. An injury such as twisting an ankle.
2. The skins of tomatoes, red/black grapes and red/black plums, or anything produced from them such as red wine, port, sherry etc, raisons and sultanas (i.e. mince pies, belgian buns, christmas cake etc).
3. Scallops, liver, kidney and offal.
Avoiding the above has completely changed my life as 10 years ago I was sufferring gout 2/3/4 times a week and sometimes unable to walk.
White wineine made from red grapes is perfectly ok, so it is only the skins that are the problem. It is something in the skins of these red grapes which is not in the skins of green grapes which is the trigger for much gout.

Been dealing with gout for 3 years, had it bad last summer...continual for 3 months. Kept bouncing between left foot, right foot, left knee....

Finally found a solution with Prednisone, which eliminated all pain and discomfort. This, however, does NOT eliminate uric acid. It did allow me to start allopurinol, which has controlled my uric acid levels.

When I first went to the doctor, uric avid levels were at 14. Now level is a pretty steady 5.5 to 6.0. You might have to play with your allopurinol dosage until you get it right for your body and diet.

I should of edited comment. I meant. Mom had gout episod that lasted sometime. Eating the fresh cherries stopped the gout. Second time she had gout. Started cherrie and was over quickly.
I guess I was looking up gout because blood test just said I had very high uric acid but I have no gout symptoms. Anyone know what else can cause high uric acid?

My mother had a terrible ordeal with Gout, it didn't last few days. She spent quite a few days in the hospital, her's was from elbow to fingers. I don't know what meds she received but in my opinion the didn't do much. She got home and someone told her to eat fresh or frozen cherries with no sugar. I worked. This happened 2x's second time she got the cherries again. It was over quicly. Coincidence (don't know). It sure won't hurt anyone and might be worth a try a heck of a lot cheaper than meds

First thing first, prayer won't work!

If you are having a gout attack, your doctor should be prescribing you a non steroidal anti inflammatory (ibuprofen, celebrex, naproxen etc) for the pain, and should be testing your uric acid levels.

Once they have established if the levels are too high, they can start you on something like allopurinol or febuxostat to lower your uric acid levels. The only somewhat is that by taking these medications, you may well suffer a few more gout flares, as the uric acid crystals innuout joints dissolve and flush out.

Thankfully it is only temporary, and with a healthy diet and some luck, you should not suffer too badly in future.

I am presently going through a severe flare of gout. The right big toe joint is inflamed, swollen and very painful. My first gout flare was after menopause, 03/2011, the second flare was 08/11, the third 10/11 and now this one. This is the most painful one. I am also on for HBP Lisinopril & Hydrochlorothiaz 20mg/25mg.
which after reading abt. the disease will stop taking for a bit. (Just to see if any change).
Also I hurt that particular toe the day before.
I Am only taking "Aleve" for pain and have not sleep over 2 hrs. straight, in 3 days.
I left messages with my Doctor and with the pharmarcy, to no avail. This disease has changed my life. I can barely get around when I have a flare. I have decided to write all this out in journal for future references.
I do believe my eldest sister had gout also.
I want to learn as much as possible about this. So your comments due matter. I need to know about the different Meds for gout. Allopurinal, ColBensmid, Probenecid & Uloric. Have anyone tried any of theses and if they have, what was the result? Thank you in advance for any and all information. And by the way. I'm trying first and foremost prayer. It has worked in many of my past illnesses. Maybe leaning but still here.

I dropped a heavy shoe directly on the big toe join where gout is localized for me. I was not having a gout attack, but there was pain when the shoe hit the joint. Later in the day the toe reacted with pain and redness. Was it because of the shoe hitting the joint?

I know that I have arthritic tendencies, but I suspect that gout also is involved. In my earlier years (currently 70) I spent a great deal of time pounding my feet on gym floors. As an adult, I still continued to treat my feet as though they were made of steel. Now in the relatively early stages of old age, I have a great deal of pain in the balls of my feet, and I also have arthritic pain and disfigurement of both toes and fingers. Most of my pain is from my feet. Am I way out in left field in suspecting gout?

I had bariatric surgery 3 years ago.A year later I started having kidney stones, some I had to go to hospital for, but I have been having them since, alsmost every day, hospital says my kidney are packed , totally packed with them and 1 time I hade 15 stones in one "urine hat" as they call it. Bariatric surgeon said uric acid was caused by my the surgery. Urologist tested me and sent off the "catch" to some lab back east. Stone are casued from the highest uric acid level he had ever seen, had to call his boss and make him come in for verification, which he did. The lab boss called my suregeon.

I was diagnosed with gout in July when I had it so bad in both feet at the same time that I couldn't walk. In June and again in August I had attacks in my left elbow. Geez, you hit a certain age and things begin to fall apart.

The prevalence of Gout has increased over 44% in the last two decades. Unfortunately Doctors still consider Gout to be a benign disease and statistics show that 78% of doctors do not properly manage gout. Getting good information is challenging a best. The key to beating Gout is self education! Thank you for the article. Hope to see many more :-). An often overlooked cause of gout is sleep apnea. The reduction of oxygen in the blood which occurs when a sleeping person stops breathing frequently for many seconds at a time has two effects which can lead to a gout flare. First the cells begin a process of disintegration (catabolism) which culminates irreversibly in their generation of excess uric acid fed into the blood. Second the blood pH is reduced so that the precipitation of serum uric acid as monosodium urate crystals becomes more likely. When these crystals form in joint fluid, they lead to the pain and inflammation of gout. That's why most gout flares originate during sleep.
