Dara Torres’ Fitness Tips for Beating Arthritis Pain

By Linda Childers

In her new book, Gold Medal Fitness, Olympic swimmer Dara Torres shows readers how to trim their waistline, tone muscles and do Ki-Hara stretching exercises that can help combat the stiffness and pain caused by arthritis and aging.

“As I traveled the country after the 2008 Olympics I was asked by many women and men my secrets for staying in shape at the age of 43,” Torres says. “The exercises in my book are based on my own routine but can also be adapted by readers of any age and athletic ability.”

Torres began doing Ki-Hara, a form of resistance stretching, almost 10 years ago and credits the exercises with making a huge difference in how her body moves, both on land and in water. She also credits Ki-Hara with easing the osteoarthritis pain in her shoulder and knee.

“Ki-Hara is about creating balance and efficiency in the body,” Torres says. “By moving and stretching the body in ways that mimic how your body moves in real life, you can increase your flexibility and range of motion.”

Torres firmly believes that age is just a number and encourages men and women who want to get physically fit, regardless of their age, shape or weight, to commit to fitness. For those who have been sedentary, or have other health concerns, Torres recommends getting the approval of your doctor, and starting an exercise plan slowly.

“Whether you want to slim your waist, or strengthen your core so that your lower back doesn’t bother you, these exercises can help you achieve your goal,” she says.

Torres also includes a five-week eating plan and guide to supplements for readers. The meal plans are simple, and perfect for those with busy lives who don’t have time to do a lot of cooking or meal planning.

“I recommend eating every four hours,” Torres says. “My meals contain a mix of protein (lean meat, poultry, seafood), grains and fruit and vegetables high in fiber, beans and legumes and good fats (olive oil, nuts and seeds). I limit my daily intake of dairy and carbs and while I believe in having something sweet after dinner I try to make wise choices. You don’t want to throw away all your physical work by having a pint of ice cream!”

Ki-Hara

Try this Ki-Hara exercise from the book Gold Medal Fitness by Dara Torres.

Delt Closer – This move stretches the trapezius, deltoids and neck, and can be done seated, standing or kneeling.

  1. Start with your left arm extended straight out to your side at shoulder height. Bend your arm at a 90-degree angle so your fingers are pointed forward and place your right hand on your left forearm, just below the elbow.
  2. Contract the left arm up as if you are doing a side delt raise at the gym – lifting your entire arm from the shoulder. Use the right hand to push the left arm down to the side. Be sure to give “lift” or traction by gently rolling the left arm as you lower it.
  3. Return to start position.
  4. Do 5 to 10 reps on each side.

Bonus: If you tilt your head so that your right ear is by your right shoulder while doing this stretch, you’ll get a great neck stretch.

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), arthritis is cause by wind and dampness. In other words, exposure to water and cold can cause or exacerbate arthritic conditions. Washing dishes repeatedly without gloves over time, for example, can cause arthritis in hands. Oftentimes physical therapists recommend swimming pool exercises for the elderly, but that actually makes their arthritis worse. Keeping arthritic joints dry and warm helps a lot!

My daughter, age 36, is suffering from Ankylosing Spondylitis. She is taking Methotrexate and Ultram. Please tell me what more she could do to relieve her pain? Are there exercises she could do that are specifically for this horrible disease? Thank you for all the great info you have provided before.

I agree a video or something showing me how it's done better than the explanation-- I am hoping to see some exercises for people over 55 or so -- because our bodies just don't bend and move around like the younger generation and we all aren't in Gold Medal's and such.

I want to know if I really do have arthritis. It started as a mild pain down my right arm, only when I lay down or reclined. It got worse and started radiating up to the back of my ear. Now it seems to have become a part of my life and seems to be at its worse during the night. Is this arthritis?

I loved reading about Dara's experiences and am looking forward to trying the Ki-Hara exercises. Aqua aerobics, in many different forms, is my primary form of exercise. I am 42 and look to Dara as a great role model. "You go girl!" I would also like to offer encouragement to Sanju. I was 22 when RA hit me hard. I received a bleak diagnosis and was told a wheelchair was probably in my future. By age 35 my right knee was so badly damaged that a total knee replacement was suggested as my only option. The question was when to have it because I was considered to be "too young". I had the surgery almost 3 years ago and it has totally changed my life. I am able to do so many things now that were not possible before. I know the decisions we make in our health care can be agonizing, but don't be discouraged. It's so important to keep moving. God bless you.

I have osteoarthritis in my right shoulder also and the above exercise actually made my shoulder feel better and pop! Thank you. I also do yoga which is great for stretching out and acupuncture seems to help me, too. I am always looking for new ways to relieve the pain which causes numbing and tingling down my arm into my hand.

I have undergone knee surgery 4 times for reconstruction of ACL. But due to infection it couldn't get reconstructed. Still my knee has infection due to which I have started suffering from active arthritis. My doctors tell me that reconstruction is not possible now. They will fuse my knee as and when the pain becomes unbearable. May be joint replacement is an option, but my age is 20. I don't want joint replacement to be done. Please guide me what I should do. I am too much frustrated with life.
