Do Magnets Help Osteoarthritis?

Q: I have heard of arthritis magnets or healing magnets that relieve osteoarthritis pain. Is there scientific evidence that sleeping on a magnet-filled mattress pad will help with OA pain?

A: One very small study has suggested a magnet-filled mattress pad would help, but this would need to be replicated before I would recommend you pursue this therapy. Another study, conducted by Harvard University researchers on people with knee OA, found that those who wore a sleeve containing a high-powered magnet over the affected knee reported greater pain relief after four hours than those wearing a placebo knee sleeve.

For the most part, however, studies of arthritis magnets or “healing magnets” for osteoarthritis pain have been inconclusive. In 2007, an analysis by British researchers of 29 studies of static magnets suggested there was no significant difference in pain reduction between people using magnets and placebo. The authors, who published their findings in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, concluded: “For osteoarthritis, the evidence is insufficient to exclude a clinically important benefit, which creates an opportunity for further investigation.”

My suggestion would be to consider purchasing a magnet to wear over the area of the body where you need pain relief before making a more substantive investment in a magnetic mattress pad.

You can not use just any old magnet. It has to be a very strong Rare Earth Magnet, or you wont see any results.

I am 57, have had PT for wrist, knee and hip. Most recently my neck has been an issue:When I'm relaxed,in bed,I hear a very low pitch hum, like someone blowing into a pop bottle. Dr. said I have degenerative disk in neck, may need surgury down the road. Any suggestion for eleviating the sound now?I do sleep on one of those curved pillows.

I have arthritis in my left hand (non-primary hand) in the index and middle finger to the point where the middle finger first knuckle joint is distorting the tip of my middle finger and making it point to the left. Since I work in IT, typing is my bread and butter. I try OTC drugs like Aleve and such and while they do work, it's not something I want to take over a long period of time. I also use Capsasin cream and that works *VERY* well. The only problem is if I have to rub my eyes or go to the bathroom, the consequences can be quite severe!
I saw some report about magnetic bracelets aleviating some arthritis pain and I wanted to try it...but I'm a cheap bastard and don't like paying $30-$50 for some magnetic bracelet that *MIGHT* work...so I have these Buckey Ball Rare-earth magnetic balls that think-geeks sells. You arrange these magnetic balls into intreguing shapes and designs. I fashioned a three row of buckey-ball magnets around my wrist and within 30 minutes I felt a distince lessening in pain. It feels like the Capsasin cream does. A slight numbing of the arthritis joints. It makes it tolerable. For me, magnetic therapy seems to work...This is only the first day of wearing this bracelet, so it may remain to be seen how good it works, but so far, so good! And it didn't cost me a thing!

I've used magnets for inflammation. North Pole. See the write up on my blog:

rodgerswriting.blogspot.com/2010/10/healing-infection-inflammation-and.html

I also did some experiments with magnets and plants. See the other write up.

rodgerswriting.blogspot.com/2010/09/experiments-with-morning-glories.html

In both cases, the magnets made a significant difference.

I was just recently diagnosed with arthritis in both of my hands. Being right handed my right one is worse than my left. In December I bought a magnetic bracelet hoping that it would provide some relief. It does. If I take it off for more than an hour or so, I know it. Magnets work for me and since I can't take harsh medications due to a stomach problem, I am a happy camper.

Back on track works more as a pain reliever and they have ceramic magnets. It works with the heat from the body.

Magnet Health is more healing of injuries. The North pole is attracting the iron in the red blood cells and that is how an increased blood circulation is happening.

i would recommend magnet health.

good luck

Hi. Healing magnets are great. for those who look to buy Go to MagnetHealth.se

They have a great collection of magnetic products and their magnets are used with the NORTH pole facing the body which is the most safest and healing.

The podiatrist I go to, he had magnet put in a pair of orthotics for me because I have OA in some of my feet joints, plus...I have fibromyalgia. The magnets are located in the heel of each orthotic even though it's my toes, some...which are arthritic.
I wonder, and will ask him, if the podiatrist I went to, even knew what he was doing. It doesn't feel right that a professional would have magnets added to orthotics when the patient also has fibro in both feet. When wearing my orthotics, both feet feel congested, is the best way to describe the sensation.

The most important thing about using magnetic products for pain relief is that the magnets MUST face north to the body or source of the pain. It is possible to buy N-S blankets or mixed N-S. for those who don't get relief, check the polarity. It really is important. I am living proof, having purchased a N-S and not getting much relief, when changing to a all N blanket I was without pain for the first time in30 Years,

Magnets have worked for me, for years!
I tried to pick up a 5 pound bar bell with my right hand and almost fell over.
I stepped on one magnetic shoe insole, then picked up that 5 lb bar bell fairly easily.
After putting insoles in both shoes, I could pick up a 6lb bar bell, cut veggies easily, etc.
Sleeping on a magnetic pad helps me to feel more comfortable.
And when the weather brings Arthir visiting, I wrap my wrist or/and ankle or whatever problem area, with a homedic magnet band.
Try it you might like it!

I was at the Pembrokeshire Show and met a lady who was selling a range of magnetic therapy products. After telling her about my pain I decided to get one of her woollen magnetic underlays. I noticed after 3 days that I was sleeping better and that my pain levels had decreased. I love it especially since the wool is incredibly soft - it comes from Australia. I would highly recommend them.

Some people would rather put the chemicals in their system than try something natural. I say it works and have seen the magnets work for many people.

I have fibromyaliga, RA, as well as ostheoarthritis. I am currently on anti depressants for fibro but would like to try natural healing. Does anyone know what the best product is and where can I purchase these magnetic bracelets?

Amazing, I have used advertised fridge magnets for years inside a bandage around my knees for arthritis and it does relieve a lot of pain, I was fortunate after a time using it to go off strong medication, the cost of an operation of a sought was not financialy viable to me. But yes I can get them free from various shops I shop at, it is a relieve and I am 62 y/ld. I feel much better not taking tablets all the time as I've done for years, so yep magnest may just have a part to play. There are many magnet products in health stores and chemist which may be modified to fit a persons needs, and the cost of pharmetical medicens are out of reach for many, thank you for the info, Ted.

I have been at a level 5-9 (9 when it rains) on the pain scale due to no cartilege in my right knee for years. When I was on amazon.com looking for a knee brace, I found some homedics magnets for about $10. They are very small. I have had about 20 of them taped to my knee for a few days, and my pain levels have decreased to 1-3. The closer they are to the skin, maybe with a thin barrier, the more powerful they are. I am very skeptical and wouldn't believe it, either, but I am experiencing it. This author is correct in saying to start small first. Now that I've seen what has happened with my knee, I will move on to using magnets for fibromyalgia pain.

I am a NIKKEN Independent Distributor. I was looking for something for low back pain (Spondilylicysis) wrong spelling, Knee Pain, and right ankle pain. I wear a magnetic pearl necklace, a large magnetic back pad, magnetic shoe pads, smaller knee magnets, sleep on a magnetic mattress pad and magnetic pillow. Without these magnetic products I would not still be walking, sitting and working everyday. I have no disks between my vertebra, have vertebra which have slipped, have narrowing of the spinal column. I need spinal surgery and knee surgery which I cannot afford. I don't want to take strong pain killers because they weaken the body. Email me if you are interested.

I have not tried magnetic therapy but I can tell you that I have had significant pain relief and decreased swelling from my RA as well pain relief from tight painful muscles (Fibromyalgia)by using a blanket infused with ceramic particles.

I got this product online at Back on Track. They have human products as well as horse and dog products.

I am going to order some of the clothing and in particular the gloves to decrease my hand pain and inflamation.

Hope this helps someone!

Low Level Laser Therapy...

I have been using a low level laser device that is FDA approved for over-the-counter use for pain management of OA of the hand. I'm using it on my knee and foot finding that it does provide pain relief.

Magnetic bracelets:
I have OA in my hands and the thumb joint is the worst affected area. Last December I bought two magnetic bracelets from a local crafter who makes them exclusively. I was very sceptical but was willing to try them to avoid going on harsh medications. I have had significant relief while wearing them and now leave them on 24 hrs a day. I still have some pain but it is much, much less than before.

I have a right arthritic hip joint, while feels stiff and painful when I walk. I had stopped all alcoholic drinks for a good 10 years. A short while ago on a special dinner I ventured to try a glass of red wine, a Merlot. Surprisingly upon getting up from bed the following morning, the stiffiness and pain disappeared. I believe either the alcohol improves the blood circulation in the joint or helps to cut down the inflamation. And I have read in medical journal that advises us to avoid alcohol when we have arthritis. Can anyone please provide me with som input on this issue?

I started out just making jewelry with crystal, stone etc. etc.... and selling them at local craft shows. Due to repeated requests from shoppers about where they could buy magnetic jewelry, I started buying first hematite and switched to magnatite beads and putting together bracelets, anklets and necklaces. Much to my surprise these items have become the main selling items at all my shows. I have people who buy from me over and over swearing the magnetics help relieve their pain. Two customers swear it helps their fibromyalgia. Numerous people swear it helps their arthritis, both osteo and rheumatoid. One person found relief from the pain caused by a bunion. Because I suffer from a huge bunion on my left foot, I went home and immediately made myself a magnetic anklet and within 3 days the pain was definitely less. The anklet is actually bigger now that when I made it and my new shoes don't hurt like they did. To me that means it helped decrease the swelling in my foot. Some people do not get any relief from magnets and with some people the help is so subtle they don't notice a difference until they quit wearing the pieces.

Brother! If this voodoo stuff worked, wouldn't someone have noticed that those who work in environments that have a high Gauss level, such as a radio room or military aircraft with a lot of electromagnetic gear or the generator room at the base of a dam somewhere never suffered from arthritic type pains or that perhaps there was a lower level of same? I guess if you believe in something enough the good old placebo effect may kick in, but I have been exposed to high levels of electromagnetism and high Gauss environments for years, along with others that had no presumption that this was efficacious, and I never noticed the slightest relief from my significant arthritis pain; I sure wish I had!

I read the text from Cynthia Olson about her
bracelet that a friend gave her that took her
shoulder pain away. I sure can use that. Where can you buy one and what kind do you buy? I spend a lot of time sleeping in my recliner in order to get any sleep. Would like to hear from someone.

Thank You, Charlene

I slept on a magnetic mattress for over four months. I did not feel any relief for the pain. However, some of my friends felt noticeable relief.

I have osteoarthritis (fortunately fairly mild so far)and what works best for my right wrist is a magnetic bracelet. However a magnetic knee cuff does not work for my left knee. My lower back is improved with magnets taped to it, but as above, they are difficult to keep on.

A couple of months ago my friend gave me a decorative bracelet of magnets that wraps around my wrist. She did not know I was having shoulder problems. I recall after wearing it all day (because the colors looked really nice with what I was wearing). I noticed that I did not have any shoulder pain that night so I wore it the next day and again I noticed no pain. I then didn't wear it for several days and started having pain again. Last night I got up a 1:00 in the morning because of the amount of pain I was having. I put the bracelet on and slept with it and slept through the entire night with no pain in the morning. I don't know how this works but I know there is something to it.

I sleep on a magnetic mattress pad. I've tried taking it off to test the difference. Keeping it on all the time is much better!
Don't expect miracles. Any difference is an improvement.
I use a magnetic cuff when the arm/ hand hurts, especially after a long day at work using the computer.
Now I'm looking for something that would fit my fat knees.
Magnets do work. Try to cut something strong like the hard plastic covering over a safety store product or produce container. Then put on a magnetic cuff or step on a magnetic shoe insert. The cutting is suddenly possible again! :-)

I tried using a variety of magnets that I would tape to the painful spot on my body. I had either very inconclusive results or some relief. They were hard to keep on.

Magnet matress:
My wife has to sleep on a magnet matress about four nights per week, no more than 7-8 hrs. per night, to get relief in her back and hips. This does nothing for me and won't help all people, but it does get her relief for a good night sleep. She alsodoes a lot of exercises, and uses a tilt table, but her system just won't take most arthritic medations.
Thank you Cason
