Hometown Heroes

Do you know any who deserve a pat on the back?

By Annette Beach

Over the weekend, I volunteered to help with a fundraiser and was surrounded by heroes! It was great!

The event was called, “Hometown Heroes, Truck Touch.” The idea was to bring together local heroes to raise money for an organization that recognizes heroes from our military.

Who are Hometown Heroes? This event defined them as law enforcement, fire and EMT emergency squads, construction and community crews, educational providers, military and more. The Truck Touch allowed each of these heroes to display their truck or vehicle to give families the opportunity to get up close and personal. Kids were allowed to climb, push buttons, talk through intercoms, get inside and learn how each one operates.

While all of this was going on, there were owners of classic and muscle cars who displayed their vehicles to give the adults an extra thrill. As people walked around and mingled, they didn’t have to look far to see heroes from different branches of the military. There were many from past and present years.

Overall, everyone seemed happy and enthused to support a good cause. It was really nice to see so many heroes in one place!

While there are plenty of larger cities close to my home, I am partial to small towns and country living. I like communities “where everybody knows your name” and when someone is in need, people step up to do what’s needed (even if they don’t know your name).

I think that’s why I enjoyed this event so much. Hometown Heroes are the everyday people who make our towns, home.

Who do you know that is a hero? Is there someone serving your community who should be recognized?

I am friends with a Marine family and the dad has gone to war zones more times than I probably know. He was just in Afghanistan and is going to be going back soon. He has put his life on the line numerous times and he is as humble as anyone. His wife has chronic back pain and is unable to do alot, so it is good that she has had support from her daughter and friends/neighbors. He has been gone probably 10 years of their 20 year marriage. What a commitment!

I would like to thank all of the people who are in jobs where they are helping me to have the freedoms I take for granted - including military, police, fire, EMT, etc. I appreciate what you do!
