The Super Bowl … does it matter who’s playing? It’s the only show when the DVR is not used to fast-forward through the commercials. If anything, the rewind button gets a workout!
Wouldn’t it be fun to be in the room, brainstorming on how to advertise a product? When I see what was approved for a commercial, I can only imagine the things that weren’t.
What I’d really like to know is, what’s the deal with men in their underwear? We saw babes ripping their shirts off while men of all shapes and many sizes casually paraded in their skivvies.
In my opinion, the beer commercials cover the range of extremes. Beer in a refrigerator made out of beer. A plane crash where beer trumps being rescued from the island, the jet engine is turned into a hot tub and the emergency slide becomes an event. I loved, “The Bridge is out” and how the entire town came to the rescue, including the dog. Did you notice the tire tracks on the backs of their shirts? Priorities and sacrifice! And who doesn’t like the always tasteful, Clydesdales?
Of course the babies are a hit! I’m not sure they’ll ever top the spit up baby, but the howling baby came close. Seeing the babies as adults with a touch of innocence is too cute! The panicking baby with hands on his head, shouting, “He’s eating lobster too.” What about the cool, suave babies on the plane, returning from the bachelor party? They’re so adult-like!
Do you remember the Gerber baby and how popularity followed into adulthood because of a picture? The talking babies have a claim to fame for the rest of their lives!
Two of my favorites were simply because they were nostalgic. First, the VW slug bug had to be recognized by all generations. Reminded me of being on a family vacation many years ago when everyone, except for Grandpa, had sore arms and was tired of playing. Individually we each announced, “no slug backs,” and we all quit. Later we heard, “ouch” coming from the back of the van and noticed Grandpa slugging his own arms. A memory none of us will ever forget!
The second commercial that brought back childhood memories was the ad for Kia Sorento, where the toys came to life. Did anyone besides me have a sock monkey? Having the Mom tattoo “sewn” to his arm was a sign of the times, bringing the monkey into the 21st century!
Probably the most surprising, yet if you think about, not so surprising, was the kings and queen of talk shows. Having Oprah in the middle of David Letterman and Jay Leno, while Letterman mocked, “He’s just saying that because I’m here” was priceless!
