Introducing the Tin Mom

Meet blogger Annette Beach

By Annette Beach

Hi and thank you for checking out my blog! This is my first time hosting a blog and I'm excited! With your help, I hope to make this a successful journey.

Although I have an extensive history with arthritis and this is an arthritis site, I'm not going to focus entirely on arthritis-related issues. I'm sure we'll address the subject often, but I spend enough time struggling with limited range of motion, pain, stiffness and the side effects that come with this disease; I'm not going to let it dominate my blog.

Given my medical history (32 operations including 13 joint replacements and multiple reconstructions), I've often said, "Arthritis is my life." But the truth is, it's not! (And I really need to stop saying that!) Arthritis is a beast living inside of my body, feeding off of my joints and interfering with my plans; but it is not my life. My life is: my God, my family and my friends!

Arthritis is an obstacle and a daily challenge – one that I've faced daily for almost 23 years. As many of you know, it can be tough – very tough on so many levels! It is more than achy fingers and it often takes more than an over-the-counter pill to get through a day. But it is not my life and I do not want it to be my identity! If people were to describe me using one word and they would use the word "arthritis," then I've been doing something wrong.

Have you ever wondered what single word would be used to describe you? If 25 people were asked to use one word to describe you, would most people use the same word or do you think it would be a variety of words? Now for the scary question: would the word be positive or negative?

Hi Leigh and welcome to my blog!

Sounds like you have spirit and determination to kick this disease in the butt! Do not compare your diagnosis to mine or another. What you're experiencing is real and impacts your life. Do not cut it short.

Remember, you were just diagnosed, I've been playing the game for 23 years.

Keep blogging and together we can all make a difference :)

Hey, Annette, just read about your blog in A. Today, and was excited to have some sisters to blog with. Loneliness is one curse of this "illness." My youngest daughter is getting married on May 23, a lot of people will be at my home (originally the wedding was going to be here but the sewer overflowed!!!)and I am having day upon day upon day where I can't even get dressed! Please move my blog to an appropropriate section; let me know where it is please; but does anyone have any ideas for getting dressed, serving the bride and bridesmaids who will be staying here, walking and standing in glamorous shoes (I'm only 62)

Please help ladies!!!!

Hi Annette,
I am 37 and have had rheumatoid arthritis for 11 years. I look forward to reading more of your posts. I started a blog about arthritis last summer and I have found blogging to be very cathartic. I hope you experience the same thing!

The word I would use to describe me and others who battle arthritis?

Warriors.

My Sista! We are very proud of you for bridging this gap! I am looking forward to more conversations and for bringing people (especially young adults) with arthritis together, not only through your blog, but through Arthritis Introspective as we all know that when we come together, we can face anything! Time is very tight over the next few, but soon, there will be much more time for comments! Love You!

Hi Lady:) I am so honered to know you Annette! And I am lovin the bloggin!

My name is Samantha Johnson. I have JRA onset and was diagnosed when I was 18 months old and am 41 now. The word others would probably call me is "Determined." I like to think I am resillient.

As for being an advocate..yes! I am one of the lucky and talented 6 Founding Board members of Arthritis Introspective, and I love it!!

Hi Annette,
I met you again in Phoenix, at the YA Gathering 2007. My one word to describe you is FUN! I know my friends would come up with 25 different words to describe me, hopefully positive!

hey my friend. Good job with the blog. I am excited to watch it and follow along. My one word changes often but today it has to be persistent. I am 3 weeks post op on a total knee replacement and as I struggle with my baby steps, feel the pain because I cant take pain meds, I just keep on keepin on. One wee, wobbly step at a time.....hugs to all

It's nice to see the replies -- thanks to all of you! I plan to post Monday mornings and Wednesday afternoons. Please check back to see what other topics we can discuss. I'm taking notes and I will try to address your subjects and questions as they arise. Thanks again ... with your help, we can have fun, educate and reach out to others.

I know several of you personally and the word I think of for all of you is INSPIRATION! In the past, have drawn from your individual and combined strength, faith, friendship & knowledge / expirience...
I agree with Cathy about any advoacy we can do with our political representaives - but..
An even more powerfull or at least parallel advocacy is the one we provide to each other.
Annette - another word for you, in the name of peer advocy - is LEADER. Arthritis Today and this blog can provide that support and forum.
One final word for all who are involved beyound the illness... THANKS!

Hi Annette! Thank for sharing your story. How inspiring it is. I think my one word would also have to be "strong". I was diagnosed with mixed connective tissue disease, lupus, arthritis, and fibromyalgia in 2003 and then in 2006 my daughter was diagnosed with Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis. So all my friends and family tell me how strong I am to not only be dealing with my illnesses, but also my daughters. Strong is definitely my word.

I agree with your thoughts, artritus is a part of who you are, but doesn't need to define who you are. I really do not know of a single word for others to describe me, I don't know that I would see myself as others would, with or without arthritus. I can say I believe it would be positive though.

Well, I just read the whole piece up top and figured out I probably don't know what a blog is - I guess I was supposed to answer the question! ha ha
I would have to go with Sharon's answer and say I would be called "Mom." I think I could get 25 of my daughter's friends to say that.

I also think that "Christian" is another word that 25 people would call me (so I guess I'm going with Eleanor's response!).

Two best worlds in the English language, don't you think!

Hey Annette -

This up and down weather is causing me a lot of pain! Urggh. What kinds of things do you and others do to help with the pain? I mean, one day it is 10 degrees and two days later it is 60 degrees and then it drops again a few days later! Gotta love the midwest.

Hi Annette -

Do you think everyone with arthritis should advocate? I do. I would love it if everyone would write their members of congress regarding passage of the Arthritis Prevention Control and Cure Act. How can I spread the word more?

Sincerely,
Ohio Advocate!

My one word would be "strong". People always tell me how strong I am to deal with the pain and medicines. It is tough to get up every morning and do all that is expected in a day then have to deal with pain too. I think most people would use the word strong and it is a positive for sure. You can not live with arthritis and not be a positive person. You have to see the glass half full.

You surely have such a nice smile for all the pain you are in. Arthritis hasn't done anything to your beautiful face. I am a senior citizen dealing with the ravages of the disease, presently I am not able to walk. Life is very hard, but thanks to my beliefs in a loving God, who has promised me a better life here on earth in the near future without pain, and a wonderful husband who is there for me all the time, I manage to get through each day. I think my friends would say what a sweet woman I am, and my husband agrees.

Thanks for sharing your story. You go, girl! I think the one word people would use to describe me is "mom." I think that's great, because what could be a better role. I'd certainly rather be defined by my children than by my illness.
