Here are some questions you may want to ask your surgeon or someone who has gone through this type of surgery before:

  • How long will I need to stay in the hospital after the operation?
  • How much pain will I experience?
  • How long will the pain last?
  • How long do I have to stay in bed at the hospital? At home?
  • When will I start physical therapy? Will I need to see a therapist in my home or will I have outpatient therapy?
  • May I see a brochure or video about the recovery or rehabilitation process?
  • Will I need to arrange for some help at home? If so, for how long?
  • Will I need to hire professional help or will help form my family and friends be enough?
  • Will I need any special equipment for my home? If so, what kind?
  • Will I need to make any modification to my home? If so, what kind?
  • What activities should I not do during my recovery – driving, using the toilet, climbing stairs, bending, eating, having sex?
  • How often will I have follow-up visits with you? Are these visits included in the cost of the surgery?
